hey! i am relatively new to sprouting. i always have homemade lentil sprouts in my fridge or in sprouting jars, and the easy ones such as garbanzos. i've definitely noticed that my sprouts are white. i was wondering how to make green sprouts- let me clarify. alfalfa, for example, would be a green sprout, but i imagine the difference is that most green sprouts (grasses?) would be grown in soil?
it just seems to me like green sprouts would have more health benefits. (but i could be wrong) i love my lentil sprouts but i'd like to branch out.

so i guess, building on what i was saying, could you tell me how i might go about sprouting in soil?

i would love to have microgreens, too, and those gorgeous purple radish sprouts. and sunflower sprouts - see, that's what i mean. sprouting sunflower seeds makes a non-green sprout. but sunflower greens are, well, green. i'm confused.

thanks for dealing with this silly post;)

Hi ~ I too would like to try growing microgreens, but I haven't taken the time yet to learn that. I do sprout though. I also grow sunflower greens and wheat grass, so I do a bit of planting.

You mentioned alfalfa sprouts. Mine are green - well, the leaves at the end of the sprouts are green and that's because I expose them to sunlight, especially their last day of growing. I place near a sunny window and that greens them up! The same with broccoli sprouts - I give them sun on their last day too.

Not that I shield them from sun prior to their last day - I leave them out on the counter top and they do get indirect sunlight.

For the sunflower greens - you need to use unhulled seeds, still in their shells. I soak mine overnight and then plant them up. There are many YT videos on how to do this, here's one from Raw Radiant Health (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3y7UiGn2-M). I watched several and just dove in. I'm eating off one tray right now and will plant up another one tomorrow.

I love all my sprouts and greens and wheatgrass - my kitchen just feels alive.

I grow all of my sprouts without soil and they are as green as can be and growing great. Just a little slower during the winter months but that is ok.

Good luck and take care, Paul.
