I know that all of you aren't following my un-cooking adventure as I prepare every recipe in Alissa's book, so I thought I'd start this thread. I am learning a lot from this project, but the "Light Bulb Moments" are really exciting.

I'll share one that I just had. I hope you'll share yours, because I'm sure there are many that I haven't had yet!

Dehydrating: I have always made these recipes in the morning and popped them in to get going. But for a first-time recipe I've decided this is not the best way to go. If the recipe isn't ready to come out by bedtime, then it goes for another 8 hours without me checking it. So now I am starting them in the early evening and will be able to check them after 8 hours and keep an eye on them. I am very new to dehydrating, and am finding quite a learning curve here.

Hope this helps somebody!

Great post. I have trouble timing stuff so it doesn't sit in the D overnight without me checking it. Some things don't really matter but some definitely do!

i live in a very humid location so things always take much longer to dehydrate. i always start mine around noon... so it can go overnight and be ready by the next evening. ;)

I had one of those taste sensation moments the first time I added a garlic clove into the juicer when I made fresh orange juice. Now I add even more. :)

Really:eek: I add ginger regularly. Do you think the taste would be similar? I'll have to try it.

Good point, Aleesha. My climate varies. You have reminded me that I need to pay attention to the humidity! I'll bet that's why I am having so much trouble! Thanks.

When I was processing bananas and decided to add coconut oil, it tasted like melted butter!! :D

One of my recent epiphanies happened while I was dehydrating croquettes on my 4 tray Excalibur- at the time I looked at the amount of batter I had and the amount of space I had for dehydrating and it seemed that since the croquettes can be pretty thick from tray to the next tray I would need to take out one tray (leaving me with only 3 trays of dehydrating space) so the croquettes didn't get stuck on the tray above it. So, I put in 3 trays into the top 3 grooves and then I placed a dehydrating sheet without the tray directly onto the plastic part of the dehydrator...and this ways I was able to d on all 4 shelves without smooshing the food onto the trays of the d itself.

it takes me way longer to dehydrate anything. if a book says 4-6 hours... i know it's overnight and into the next day for me. LOL

Good to know. So it's not just me!

I even checked the temp using my instant read oven thermometer and it was 110 so I know my temp is OK. Does altitude affect dehydrating time like it does regular cooking and baking time?

Probably a lot of you know this, but I did not.

I had some sprouted wheat left yesterday that I was too tired to use, so I covered it well and stuck it in the fridge. I just tasted it and it is still great! Good to know, since now I will sprout more at one time. I will let some go until tomorrow so I'll know if it will keep more than 1 day.
