View Full Version : Is juice affecting digestion?

I recently started to drink a liver detox tea a few days a week and beets (2weeks ago) and I started off very slow drinking about 1 ounce a day mixed with carrots and apple. I was eventually able to up it to 3 ounces a day with the above mentioned combination. Once I went up to that amount I have been having a lot of problems with digestion. I am very regular now with some reddish bm and urine. That is good but the problem now lies in the increased flatulence, bloating and reguritation of food. I have a very light breakfast maybe tea and toast and I am so bloated after that and start reguritating in the form of liquid when I have the sensation to belch. This will last for at least 3-4 hours before I start being able to belch without liquid coming up. I have not had this problem with any other juice, just when I started with the beet. I also got flu like symptoms when I started drinking it, had a low grade fever for 1 day and chest pain. I am now expelling mucus. Am I just detoxing or what? I hope that this will pass because I am very uncomfortable and have no desire to eat due to my current symptoms which have been going on for about two weeks. If I am detoxing I am alittle bummed because I thought that I have been doing really well as far as my eating habits so this type of reaction from my body is shocking.

What are you trying to accomplish by drinking beet/carrot/apple juice?
I would definitely start by drinking the juice on an empty stomach, and waiting 30 minutes afterward before eating anything else.
Also, what has your diet typically been like? I know when I first gave up dairy, I spewed mucus for a week.

I knew that I would get some type of detox symptoms as I was drinking the beets for a livier cleansing affect. My diet prior was pretty good and I was transitioning to raw. I stopped dairy about 2 weeks ago also. I guess I am just shocked at how my body is reacting and the length of time that it is occurring considering I was eating pretty good. From previous posts I have been dealing with an injury on which I was on pain meds for a while and being a smoker so in retrospect I guess this is what is contributing to the length of detox with my lovely beets.

That's a high sugar juice. You need minerals like greens or celery to balance it out. Having cooked with fasting will cause issues. Having just eliminated foods like dairy and then going straight to juice will cause issues. You should read about detailed fasting and how it should be done correctly, especially by raw foodists. Probably would've been better to stick with raw for awhile before the fast since raw is cleansing on it's own. Just some ideas...

you do not get a fever with detox. if you have/had a fever... it wasn't detox!

If you recently stopped smoking, and because you mention expectorating mucous and chest pain, my guess is that the cleansing is causing your lungs to push up some of the tar with the mucous your body uses to clear out your lungs (that's how they cleanse themselves of daily dust and pollutants, with mucous), and that tar/mucous is draining back down your throat. You need to cut out the dairy and drink lots of water to maintain a healthy mucous level. The draining tobacco resins are probably upsetting your digestion and stomach, weakening the closing of your lower esophageal sphincter (tobacco and coffee are bad about this), and you're getting reflux from that drainage. So while it could be the detox that is helping clean your lungs, it is the tars from smoking that are causing the problems. I smoked lightly for a year or so, a few smokes a day and not even daily. Sometimes I went weeks without buying a pouch. When I quit for those short terms and for good, I noticed this same effect. I found this to help you. http://www.ehow.com/how_5471148_detox-lungs.html

I'm curious -- based on my understanding of detox, the metabolic processes involved and the work of moving toxins out of the cells and body, why couldn't you have an elevated body temp or fever as a direct result?

i have no idea. all i know is that when you have a fever... it's not detox. (information i was told by a hygienic doctor who is extremely knowledgeable regarding fasting)

it sounds like maybe you're increasing the beet juice too fast. go back down to 1 or 2 oz mixed with the other juice, and try chewing your juice before swallowing to make sure the enzymes in your saliva start to break it down. beet juice can be very intense.

Beet juice is very strong. There are cases where people temporarily lost their voice after drinking it. My mom would throw up after drinking it. So if it doesn't agree with you - why bother? There are so many wonderful veggies and greens to choose from to juice. I personally add beets occasionally to my other mixes, but in small amounts without any problems.

I got some probiotic and it has helped so much. My bloating, flatulence and regurgitation has decreased. The mucus is still coming up though. I will be cutting back down to 1 ounce of beet juice as I too think that maybe I went up to fast. I was seeing how I felt on a day to day basis and it probably just snuck up on me. I also feel that I need to increase my water intake as well. Thanks for the help!

I'm curious Beyceo; What happened? Are you still drinking the tea and juice?

after re reading the OP... i would think it's perhaps the SAD food that's causing the problem, not the live juice :)
but definitely slowing your detox would be a good thing... less beet and more water!
