Is it true that lemon peels can be left on if they're ORGANIC? I usually buy Costco's bag of lemons for the price, but am thinking I can justify organic if I can use the entire fruit. Thanks!

if it's thick... it'll make your smoothie bitter...

Yeah this stuffs basically lemon peel that grows on trees. I just had some for the first time today (blended in banana ice cream) and it was delishiricorice. It was some straight Lemon Sherbet from the yesteryear (it was the year of the boonies). I'm going to experiment with using actual lemon peels in the same fashion.

Ya know something springs to mind that I once read about lemon/orange peels being toxic... who knows man everything is toxic nowadays... these young people and their toxic stuffs.

I don't add lemons to my smoothies, but I do add them to my green juice and I leave the peel on for that. But please know that even the organic lemons and limes I've bought have wax on them. As do organic apples I buy at the farmer's market.

I just bought some organic limes at Walmart and it said they might have "vegetable petroleum" (??) on them to preserve them. Sounds loverly... *Ü*

I've left them on before. They do make a drink very white and creamy--but bitter so I only do it if making a strawberry lemonade or something sweet.

Is the issue that peeling lemons is hard for you? You can cut both ends off, then put one flat end down on the board and slice the peel off by cutting down on all sides of it. It doesn't take very long. I tried to find a video..

This is a great time of year to find organic lemons that aren't waxed at the farmers market or from a neighbor.

I don't know about tossing lemon peels into a smoothie, but you can definately use lemon zest (The yellow part, not the white pith). The zest contains all of the fragrant oils, and probably imparts a stronger lemon flavor than the juice.

I use the zest in one dish that I make regularly so always have some peeled lemon in the fridge as a result and use that in my juices.

I routinely add one whole lemon(peel and all) to my smoothie. I like the fresh, zesty taste it gives. My favorite combo is bananas, mango, parsley and a whole lemon.

This thread is very interesting. I never would have thought to add a lemon to my smoothie. Hmm ...

This is how I usually peel a lemon for smoothies, however as I said in my original post, I needed to be able to use the entire lemon (peel and all) to justify the cost of organic v. Costco's bag of lemons. I figured if I could use less lemons that would be great.

I really enjoy green lemonade smoothies with kale, chard, parsley, lemon and flaxseed.

Really?

I was just about to write a 1950's b horror movie script around it....

I heard there are more nutrients in the peel than from the juice.

I only keep the pill when i juice, for the smoothie, it would be too bitter for me, i don't think i could drink that.

Enjoy. I love the combination with lemon juice, apple and Kayle. It tastes like a limonade

Hugs!

Chinese use lemon peels and orange peels as medicine and snacks.

I scratch off the while stuff on the peels with a small sharp knigh (easy work) and toss the orange outer part into my smoothie. It tastes fine with me. Maybe start with a little and see if you like it.
