hkflanagan -
I don't know how much you should eat. I never thought of measuring it... but come to think of it, I eat about two whole bulbs per week - just because it is one of my favorite flavors. I add it to many things - and usually a bit more than called for! It makes me feel clean and robust! :p

The is much controversy in the raw movement concerning garlic (and onions)
One side says it's raw, it keeps away intestinal parasites, it tastes good, eat it.
Another side says, You can't make an entire meal out of it, so don't eat it.
This would also be the people who say do not eat herbs, spices etc.
It is all up to you.
I personally eat anything raw that I like especially garlic and onions, and herbs and spices.
I'm not sure exactly where you got an idea that you are supposed to eat a certain amount of garlic? Is it supposed to do something specific for you?
I would maybe look at that source for the exact answer to your question.
But, I love it, so I eat as much as I want. often in salad dressings, and in salad fresh, in my neatloaf, bar-b-que sauce, and in alot of dressings, sauces, salsa's, pico de gallo, taco's burritos, etc.
We have just one garden that we only grow garlic in, because we eat so much of it.
Ayurvedic medicine considers garlic/onions to be tamasic (slowing, dulling to the senses, distracting). Many serious yogis and yoginis don't consume it for this reason; it can inhibit concentration and should be avoided when doing something that requires lots of focus.
So, if you're a nuclear physicist or have an intense yoga practice, you might want to limit intake to a few cloves per week.
However, as mentioned, garlic has fantastic antibacterial properties and can be useful in ridding the body of parasites or bad bacteria. Although it might compromise some good flora, this can be especially helpful when beginning a raw foods lifestyle.
So, if you've got some internal junk to kill off, you might want to try a few cloves per day.
...If neither of these categories really matter to you, I say eat as much as you enjoy ;)

My wife has pretty much told me that I have two choices, if I eat garlic I gotta go, if I don't I can stick around. She hates the smell. Is there any way to kill the smell with a counterbalancing herb or something?

WOW, my hubby smokes, and I still keep him.
So sorry to hear that anyone would say this, let alone actually mean it.
If it were me, I would just eat the garlic, and let her know that you love her, and you also love garlic.
Well, enough of MY BELIEFS, okay, mint really helps with tastes and odors, cardamom seeds chewed, cinnamon and oregano oils, citris can help, but isn't near as effective as fresh mint leaves.
Now, for the true weird thing, if you let HER, eat the mint, it will be even better, than if just you are eating it, as it will fill her sinuses with the fresh crisp fragrance, much deeper than just your eating it.
Also, you don't have to swallow it if you don't like, you can just chew then spit it out.
My hubby uses fresh chocolate mint leaves, and I can't taste or smell his cigarette smoke, or anything on him.

You are right. Not only tong, but my stomach hurts if I take garlic straigt.
I chop garlic and add to my salad. Then I pour olive or coconut oil and mix well. garlic and green onions get coated in oil and digest slowly without any burning.
