So people are starting to notice that I'm eating more raw foods. In particular my best friend, who believes in "better living through chemistry," grills me on being a 'responsible' raw foodist. So last night, we're in the backyard and she starts asking me, "where are you getting (insert nutrient of choice)?" I had answers for most of them, when I got stumped I said, "Where was I getting that before?"

The only sound was the rustle of the trees. :p

Eventually she had to say "I don't know."

SO....

Thank you to the person that suggested this brilliant line in another thread. It works. :D

Ha! I've said something similar to people regarding veganism. When they ask where I get "X," I say, "Where do you get it?"

That's a good one, though, thanks; I'll remember that one too, especially with the holidays upon us already! ;)

Way to go! When my mother tried that on me, I asked her where she was getting various vitamins and minerals. She had no idea. I realize these people in our lives are only looking out for our wellbeing, but sometimes driving a point across is easier than sitting through the Inquisition. Plus, it gives *them* something to think about. :D

YEP, it also interupted their pattern of asking you a question, and will often start a whole new conversation, where you are not the person under interrogation.

Ok its been a few days and still no further questions from the grand Inquisitor. Talk about some mental mojo.. ;) Whoo hooo I love the board.

I think it is interesting that no one is concerned about nutrients until you start doing something a little different. I bet most people don't even know the signs of a "Protein deficiency," yet they will lecture you about how you might get one!

Crazy!!

I was 94 lbs before. Had a horrible problem with anorexia and no one was concerned. I was getting NO nutrients. I start eating RAW and all of the sudden its 20 questions about what I will be deficient in. Even worse, my mom is going through nursing school at 53 so she is all over me with questions.

I think it's great that you were able to answer every question that way. She probably won't ask again.

Many of my friends have gone RAW since I started and have lost weight and feel better. I have gained and feel better. I think after the initial questions are answered, most people are very curious about RAW because of the health benefits.

I wholeheartedly agree, valleysky! They know ZERO about nutrition, but suddenly come up with questions about it while consuming the worst possible Franken-foods!

And, wow, congratulations with your success beating anorexia! That is amazing! You are incredibly strong.

That is a great question to question answer. The problem I always get into is the whole protein/meat thing - if I were to say 'where'd I get it before' I'm afraid they'd chime in "from chicken or meat".

I had a visitor a couple of weeks ago who insisted that she treat my family to some steak and ribs on labor day. As we were walking through the store, she kept asking me if she could buy me a chicken breast. And she knows I've been a vegetarian for 3 1/2 years  I don't think she'll ever get out of her head that valuable protein doesn't come from a cooked carcass.

ok to be fair she may have thought that was a valid offer.
Real Conversation:

Host: Hi, do you want ribs or fish?
Me: Just some pasta, please.
Host: Are you on a diet?
Me: No, I'm vegetarian
Host: Oh! Well we have lamb.

This person was being sincere. It's funny now, but at the time all I could do was gape at him.

when I used to say I was vegetarian, they would always show me the chicken, when I say I don't eat any meat, they would show me the fish, when I would say NO, I don't eat anything with eyes, they show me clams and mussels, so then I would finally say do you have vegetable dishes? they would show me eggs, I would say, NO, no eggs, they would show me cheese.

So, I just didn't ask them anymore. I would usually order a chef salad with everything on the side. For some reason they could handle this, but they couldn never handle, "don't bring it to me". LOL

I know we must educate them, as they just don't know. And that's okay, because a few years ago, I didn't know either

RP, that is so true. They can understand and handle you ordering one of their normal salads and stuff on the side. How funny! Then ask them to dump the plate of sides! :)
Anyways, I was at a restaurant and I asked them for one of their salads, w/o all the junk, but to ADD things to it. She stared at me like I had just asked for the impossible!
Then when I told her that was my meal and I wanted it to be filling, then she understood.
Good idea about answering with asking a question! I will have to remember that as the holidays come up and my mother in law is horrible at thinking I am abusing my kids if they don't have chocolate.
