My goals for this month are to include more yoga - I teach 2 classes a week, but I'd really like to just "take" a class, without having to be thinking 2 steps ahead....

I need to clean up my exercise area today to make that happen. I have quite a few dvds to choose from, so that shouldn't be a problem :D

I am also resetting up my Raw kitchen.....I've been side-tracked for the past couple months....:(

It's time to recommit to my Health! ;)

I'm doing yoga daily (7 days/wk, at least one Youtube video each day even if it's just 3 minutes!). I joined Dashama's 30-Day Yoga Challenge for the impetus. I know myself -- challenges and classes keep me motivated.

Although the more I challenge myself, the more self-discipline I develop and the more independent I become in challenging myself MORE! :D

Starting very easy and gentle, and building up to practicing at least 1 hr. at a time 2-3 days a week. :D

Did a hike. i am getting a little too used to the same loop i think. i will try to shake things up ..but i do like it.
Its very rainy here. I am glad I got myself out. Sooo good for my 'head'!

My goals this month are pretty much the same, fitness wise.
I did not get to the gym last month (or even join one) as hoped. But with some scheduling changes i think i will be able to start going to the gym this month.
keeping my hiking is a must!

Come aboard all. Its really nice to share your goals , achievements, non- achievements too..etc with friends here.

Thank you too - for joining in the fun again!

Hiking sounds wonderful - there aren't too many hiking options where I live. It would be so nice to do something outside everyday....unfortunately I'm a winter wimp & it's 4 degrees outside right now with a windshield of -10 below zero......brrrrr.....I'm trying to get my exercise area cleaned up to workout in the livingroom - even though my fingertips are ice cold right now!

I know you will succeed as well!

OK!
It is done - the first workout of the new year for me! :D

I did the dvd - Yogafit Flex & Flow = 54min. I was trained through yogafit & I really like Beth Shaw's attitude - she's an awesome person!

I started the dvd & that little negative voice in the back of my head started coming through...."this is too hard, I should've chosen something easier, etc..."

Then Beth says - "Smile, your body loves this - your mind might not right now..." ;)

Way to be positive Beth!

She was so right - at that very moment - 54min later - I'm done & I feel good - it was a nice workout & stretch :D

Happy New Year (sorry I'm behind the times but I don't do the computer thing at home....) anyhoo - started the year with more work on the new treddy, snowshooing (sp :o) and 3 hours of shoveling 20inches of wet, heavy snow (yesterday)!!

Goals -
~run one mile (easy pace) without rest
~start some yoga practice (friend and I want to start a class - neither of us have any real experience with yoga, or even know the differences between type A and type B so we're looking for something good for beginners)
~tai chi everyday
~20 awesome push-ups!

Went to Tai Chi last night - Hour and a half practice, great strength as she had me practicing blindfolded so I had to go really slow to remain rooted. Awesome! :D

Monk - would love some insight on yoga. Have a "Yin yoga Kit" it's stretches on the floor for five minutes..... My friend and i really want to take a class and we're complete beginners and have no clue as to the differences between types of yoga. Any advice? :)

Great job back at ya Monkapotapus!and thanks.

I made the gym. My son and I activated a free 7 day pass at a local gym. It was fun!
I did 2 miles at a good speed on the tred.Did some arms(weights).

It will be a rainy week here so this should be good timing.
Will increase some miles and get onto the rowing machine too.Thinking of maybe even a class..hmmm thats not something i typically do, so that may be good!

Ok..hope everyone else is doing great!

Hi Shine~
Yin yoga can be very healing & balancing. There are a lot of different styles of yoga out there - I've yet to try some myself. I teach more of a Vinyasa Flow style - One movement, One Breathe - we also do the more traditional poses like the Warrior series, etc - usually holding 4 breaths, or so.

Some yoga is very focused on alignment & will have you hold the pose a lot longer & use props to help achieve the desired alignment - this is IYENGAR yoga - just a brief overview.

BIKRAM yoga is usually done in a hot room - temps can be over 100 degrees & you will do 26 poses in a specific order each time - usually a 90min class. I have not tried this kind of yoga yet, but it would be neat to do it - we don't have any studios in my area that offer it.

ASHTANGA yoga has some vinyasa flow to it & it can be pretty physical. Some ashtanga teachers will hold poses a lot longer, so participants can "get into" the pose & connect with it.

KUNDALINI yoga works with chakras & awakening energy within our bodies. I haven't tried this type of yoga either, but have seen dvds that peak my interest!

These are just a few types of yoga - there are a lot out there!

I would just look for a beginner class to learn the poses & alignment. It's always fun to try different teachers/styles - you can challenge yourself this way! :D

The library usually has dvds for rent as well as Netflix - Have fun :o

Hey THANKS Monk!! Sometimes I get overwhelmed.... My friend found a studio that does offer a general beginner class so I'm thinking we'll go there. I have done Yin Yoga a few times (just a few poses) and found it very relaxing and "balancing and healing" are EXACTLY what I am looking for!!

Last night - 45 min walk on the treddy with 4 running intervals

Need to find the right balance for day one. Don't want to be so sore that I can't move tomorrow.

Plugged in Gary Bromley's yoga DVD. Fortunately it had someone in the background showing how to do it the easy way. I am really out of shape. Couldn't do about 1/3 of the poses, not even the easy way. This is going to take time and practice.

Thursday - 1/7/10 - Taught/did my 1hr yoga class. It was kind of funny, a couple of the ladies mentioned the room was a bit chilly (I have no control over the temp. of the room unfortunately, but.....) I do have control over our movement, so I made it an active class! Half way through I asked "Is anyone still cold...." (as we all likely had sweat rolling down our brows) - they all started laughing & said "NO!" - good, that's the way I roll....

I love the yoga theme we've got going on! :D

I hope to do a couple yoga dvds over the weekend myself ;)

Jumping in on this. Thank you for starting it Monk. :)

Yesterday, a 5-hour kb training. Might be some vids on YouTube shortly (meaning w/in the next couple of days)

Today, because I crashed at 9 p.m. and got up at 1, only to go back to bed at some time this morning, didn't get out to walk BUT,

Just came in from doing some time with the kb's. I'll be doing some more later and possibly get a walk in this evening.

Yet to be seen.

Mind if I join you all?

I am SO sick of not feeling good and being in pain. Thankfully, I know firsthand the world of difference consistent exercise and yoga make, though I managed to fall off the wagon a few weeks ago. I know, a few weeks doesn't seem long, but the sudden removal of endorphins resulted in a body feeling like crap and a mind that is spiraling towards crapdom as well.

A month ago I was spending the first two hours of every day doing whatever felt right for that day...usually some semblance of hiking, cycling, ocean swimming, yoga, etc. Had been doing this for months and every single day reveled in how I felt. Fell out of the routine for various reasons  and WHOA the difference in my quality of life is huuuuuge.

So back to it....went for a simple 30 minute walk in the woods behind my house this morning and now stretching. Need to remind my body that it is alive before doing anything too full on. SO out of alignment, SI joints and lumbar region must look like that of a 90 yr old. No thanks. The buck stops here :)

Looking forward to working towards health with you all!!

An hour solid this morning of fast walking with incline, cycling, and the elliptical thingy, I think it is called. I do not particularly care for gyms but my dodgy knee and spine can't take daily pounding on hard ground....so gym it is. I LOVE it when I am working so hard that my arms sweat :) Can feel the toxins of unhealthy living coming out of my pores, yech, sure will be glad when that is over!!!

I might throw in the 30 day yoga challenge too. I never looked into yoga before- thinking it was just a bunch of stretching, but that is some sexy stuff! I wanna be ablet o do some of that stuff! wow! so do you really work up a sweat doing yoga? I mean.. think she got t hat body simply from doing yoga?

O.k., ya'll.... Go to YouTube.com and search "ground engagement". My teacher hasn't put any vids up on that yet BUT, he's got vids up on kb's (kettlebells), clubs (Indian and iron clubs) and his latest is an review of the Escrima/Kali sticks. If you look up Danny Inosanto, he's very proficient in the sticks.

I'm not proficient in any of them but will be putting up vids on my site of me doing some of those things soon. In the meantime, check out my teacher Zenkahuna on YouTube. Sincere Hogan is another fave of mine. :)

Amytug, yes, yes, yes! I never fathomed how much I would gain in alignment, less stiffness, and sheer strength in my core and outer muscles. What I really dig is that this all comes from working with your own body and nothing else (some yoga practices use props, blocks, etc. but you are still working with your own weight and center of gravity to build strength where you need it and become more flexible where you need mobility). You will know your body better than you ever thought you would! And this is only the physical aspect of yoga...the depth of the discipline is far greater.

Just had an hour walk / run through the woods and then 40 minutes of, you guessed it, yoga :_

I don't know, but I DO know that in just 12 days this month of consistent Yoga practice, I've already noticed slight toning in my abs/thighs. And I'm only doing a few minutes a night. I'm being super gentle with myself because of past (non-yoga related) injuries that are still healing.

It's been WONDERFUL... I can't wait to see what happens after this trial month and where I go with it next. :D

That's something I need help figuring out. HOW do I get my sleep schedule regulated?? I struggle PHYSICALLY with getting ASLEEP early enough to get up early.. make sense?

Nooo, you GOTS to move! The best way to ease soreness is to do a bit of the "hair of the dog that bit you". You've got to move! Not much, but some! Slowww, stretching, walking, a bit of light bouncing... hula hooping, dancing... What you will find is the soreness eases and you'll feel better the faster.

Also, Epsom salt bath maybe with some peppermint essential oil thrown in.

It would certainly make sense to Himself. He goes to sleep before me. I got up (REALLY late) at 6:10 this morning. Got to bed about 11. Normally, I'd still get up at 5 (or earlier).

He's still sleeping and will probably sleep until 8 or even 10 a.m. I don't know how He does it being 12 years younger than I BUT, maybe it's an age thing. Maybe being older, I don't need as much sleep although, I've pretty much been doing this for quite some time.

What was really fun was, about 20 years ago I took a job delivering newspapers to help pay expenses when I was training for my Work. I went to bed between 9 and 10:30; up at 2 a.m., "usually" done delivering by 5, back to bed and up by 8.

I have too much excitement for my day to sleep. Guess myself thinks I can sleep when I'm dead. I dunno. lol :p

I brought a kb up to my office so now I have a very light kb and a Bodyblade up here so whenever I've been sitting too long, I can get up and do some swings.... which I did yesterday.

I also have a 6# fitness ball in my bedroom. We only watch HULU so while I'm waiting for the 'puter to boot I play with the ball.

A few minutes numerous times a day adds up!

We're expecting some HEAVY rain for the next few days BUT, I have my stuff in my sunroom. I'm thinking I may take a pic of all my goodies just for the fun of it. More coming soon! heh!

Weird poses last night with my Yoga series.... Dashama introduced some "children's yoga" ideas and I had no idea my leg could wrap in that direction. :D

I find it fascinating how flexible I already am without any training.... and I am going to keep this up because the breathing is relaxing, I feel AMAZING when I'm done, and I want to be super-duper flexible, too.

I just do.

Don't ask why.

Hi..I'm going to change my routine this year. New exercise routine and diet. Last year was a mess. I did all of these dieting and work-outs just to find out that I am doing the wrong thing. I've been a victim of a diet scam. A tip to everyone, please don't fall for these kinds of scams. But now, I will be doing the routine I really know.

By the way, this site is great! Loved it!

I really haven't kept a diary of my exercise progress or really been exercising like I wanted to so here I am.

I find this thread very helpful when I find myself getting lazy about exercising to get myself back into high gear! Thanks monk!! :)

Today I'm going for a walk and tomorrow I will so some isometric exercise to firm my muscles and it helps my body to have a youthful posture and gracefulness to it.

Here's the name of the book that I've been going by which is, Isometric Power Revoution by John E. Petterson . It really shapes me up fast!!

And facial exercising along with my exercise routine, I do 200x each with a isometric hold at the end. It really keeps the face "young looking" and facial muscles in balance on both sides. It really works! Usually do it every other or every two days!!

Happy Exercising Everyone!!! :)

One video isn't cutting it for me, anymore. I find that even on an 8 minute video (oooh, aahh) I still feel like I want to keep going. I've been doing multiple videos when I have time, and excitedly waiting for my Dashama DVD's to arrive in the mail so I have longer sequences to follow each night.

I LOVE YOGA!!

This weekend was a bit of a bust as my sil with new babe are up from NM so there was mostly family time. We did go shopping and walking around a few towns so I will count that.

Yesterday was FIVE HOURS of shoveling A FOOT of snow by myself as hubby is out of town and it looks like I get to shovel another 5-8 inches again this afternoon!!! My body hurts but feels good too and I am so proud of myself for doing the whole thing!! :D

It's been a super crazy week with hubby gone and 2 feet of snow - my exercise has been shoveling. Tai Chi class was cancelled - Yoga tonight (xf) and more shoveling!!!

I've had to stop the running thing tho so I won't make that goal by end of Jan so I am now making it for my b-day (middle of Feb).

Did some unreasonably heavy lifting this week. It was somewhat unavoidable... those boxes had to GO! I need SPACE in this house.

Unfortunately, injured my little spine again, apparently. I feel much like I did back in October. Constant "popping", lots of inflammation back there and just generally feeling tight and achy. I'm VERY thankful for my raw foods right now... they make this so much more tolerable!!! :D

And it's my fault this happened, so I am NOT whining. :D Just informing!

Sticking to the nightly Yoga -- honestly, doing those stretches is the only time I feel good in the back area right now!!!

Suggestions for methods of relieving back pain with exercise? I would most gratefully welcome them right now....

Do hot (not overly) epsom salt baths for about 10 minutes daily; Add peppermint/eucalypus/spearment/menthol oils to the bath and/or dilute with a good oil (olive or jojoba) and rub into that area; figure 8's with the hips; hip rotations (just go to the edge of pain, not into it for any of the following); side bends; lay on the floor and do dead bug; bring knees to chest and rock (if it feels good).

Hey there~
The cat stretch is done on all 4's, wrist under your shoulders, knees under your hips. Tuck the tailbone & pull your navel toward the spine. The opposite stretch is cow stretch: dropping belly down, while looking up towards the ceiling (inhale), exhale into cat stretch. Hope your back feels better soon~monk~

Sat. 1/23/10 ~
I just got done doing one of my yoga dvds....after reading Revvell's post...got my butt moving.

I did the Quick Start Yoga for weight loss - Gaiam (Suzanne Deason) - It's a 2 part dvd - the 1st is 30min, with some poses & the 2nd part is an energy balancing one - lots of yin yoga poses here - very restorative 20mins of stretches & breathing.

Total today of 50min. :o

Thank you thank you thank you.

I was doing hot baths but hadn't tried any extras in the bath. Also, keeping steady with the nightly Yoga and essentially focusing ELSEWHERE rather than on the pain is working very well.

Will add the stretches, the salts, and keep on rawkin' my World!!!

Thank you thank you again! :D

New Developments in the Diva's Exercise Routine:

Registered with two friends :D for a weekly Taoist Tai Chi class, one night a week. Starts February 2nd. Emphasis on healing and stress release.

Continuing with nightly Yoga (naturally wanting to do more, now... been doing two videos a night) with consistency. Ran into time challenges this weekend (namely, out REALLY late one night and didn't get home until 1am) - overcame the challenges and stuck to my Yoga... slept better for it!!!

Seeking motivation to overcome fear of walking tiny dogs along busy street (neither of them do well in dog parks, get intimidated easily by bigger dogs, which is pretty much ALL other dogs, and turn into yapping maniacs) and establishing a morning or evening dog-walking time so the little guys get out of the house/yard everyday, too!

I LOVE YOGA!

I LOVE RAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
