View Full Version : what are your experiences with msm?
ive just started taking a teaspoon a day first thing in the morning for my teeth and skin. ive also started brushing my teeth with it. ive definitely noticed my nails are much stronger and whiter, and my skin has improved, but i also started the msm at the same time as i began oil pulling and cleansing my face, so its hard to say.
my only concern is it seems, no pun intended, quite raw and 'unnatural', but what have peoples experiences been? if one teaspoon IS making my skin better, id love to take more - ive also heard that you can mix it with jojoba oil and put it on scars to heal them - what have people found and has anyone been taking it long term?
tried using the search engine on the forum but for some reason it doesnt work for me :(
thanks so much kids!

Nothing personally yet, one of my clients was taking 1000 mg's a day and moles fell off and brown ("liver spots?) disappeared. He had one mole on his shoulder that concerned me because it was bleeding. The next time I saw him it had dropped off and the skin was smooth, no scar.
I don't take anything like that consistently enough so, *shrugs* ....

I take up to a Tablespoon several times a week. I did it consistently for a couple months and stopped. I'm now taking it again, but not everyday. It is impossible for me to differentiate any benefits from the MSM from the benefits of raw food.
thanks everyone!
katiep - ive read that msm speeds up the detox process, which is why it may have given you bad skin? (if thats what it was - this could also explains headaches if taking in large doses - im only doing one teaspoon a day) - but i have noticed better skin and this thing in the back of my mouth which i thought was a cavity actually fell out! once again its so hard to say with raw because it could be msm, could be some of the changes in my diet yada yada..but i have definitely noticed my nails are heaps heaps better...so id be interested in anyone else's experiences...

How much msm are you/do you start with? I was looking at it at a health store, but didn't know whether to get pills or powder. The salesperson/owner told me the powder tasted awful and pills were probably better, then I wasn't sure so didn't get any at all til I did some research. How long before anyone was seeing a difference in skin? I got some msm cream that I put on my face recently. Anyone have results with the cream?

I recommend HIGHLY against eating it, it's a waste of precious $$ and is toxic to the body (as it is not a wholefood found in nature).

MSM powder, less than a teaspoon each morniing, really helped my skin and has mostly removed the dark spots left from bouts of acne.
I have wondered if it also cut my appetite, because I seemed to have less of an appetite when taking it consistently.

Hello,
I have dealt with acne my entire life, regardless of being raw or not. Recently I started cutting out all sugar sources from my diet. This was incredibly hard but I did notice a difference in my skin. However, with the holidays I stepped off the wagon. But MSM saved my skin!
I started taking MSM about a month ago and instantly noticed a difference in my skin. My cystal zits disappeared and I only had a few small pimples during the holidays which considering my holiday diet was amazing. For the first 2 weeks it did make me very sleepy but it was worth it for the difference in my skin.
I also recently started making my own moisturizer with it. I do three parts apple cider vinegar, 1 part water, 1 part glycerine and 1/2 part msm powder. I use this on my face twice a day. My skin is soft and beautifully smooth with a nice glow.
I have tried everything for clear skin and am willing to go to fairly strict dietary standards to achieve smooth, clear skin. I have found a miracle with MSM, one that I never thought I would find. Everyone's skin and body's needs are different but I fully recommend MSM. I take 2 grams a day.

I think that even a little bit effects my sleep. If you are taking it then please be aware of that possibility.

i've taken msm... up to 4 Tbsps per serving once a day. (i gradually increased from a tsp)... i believe it assisted me greatly when i was releasing loads of weight for my skin to come back and hug my body instead of being saggy and loose.
it does give you very weird dreams and once you get diareah you are supposed to cut back... other than that... if you want to, give it a try. ;)
i don't take anything on a reg basis but i think i took it for a few months at a time, on and off again...
hey eveyrone,
thanks for your responses.
does anyone know what the connection between msm and sleep is, and why it might provoke nightmares? youd think if it was a substance that should normally be in our diet it wouldnt affect sleep, however one person here said it made them sleepy and another said it made them unable to sleep..weird.
im currently doing a teaspoon a day (how many grams is that?) and i think ill start using more and see if my skin improves with the increase.
i also use it to brush my teeth which is going well
AND come to think of it my appetite has decreased a lot since i started using it - but then again its so hard to delineate between the effects of raw...has anyone else found this?
dont know what id do without you guys!

where does msm occurr naturally? how is the powder obtained?

MSM is a naturally - occurring sulfur compound found in many common foods, including meat, fish, eggs and dairy as well as vegetable sources, broccoli, garlic, avocado and other green vegetables. In its purified form, it is an odorless, white, water-soluble crystalline solid. It is one of the least toxic substances in biology, similar in toxicity to water. Naturally - occurring sulfur, such as that found in Lignisul MSM, is not similar to inorganic sulfides, sulfites and sulfates to which many people are allergic
I got this somewhere - can't find the source or the method for supplements so far...

Thank, T. As I understand it, MSM is a naturally occurring substance that comes from rainwater. Since a lot of the produce we eat is irrigated with something other than rainwater it is reasonable to assume using it as a supplement would be safe. As with many herbs and natural medicines it can be toxic to anyone with liver problems.

This is a raw vegan site. Tofu is cooked and not part of it.
so tofu is a good source of msm?

found this at naturalzing:
http://www.naturalzing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_44&products_id=423
but it never specifically states that it is raw or vegan.....wonder what is up with that?
Anyone else looking into it?

"One of the oddest things about MSM is that it can help produce a solid base energy and at the same time it helps a person to be calm. Creativity increases. It seems to us that this is because MSM allows each cell in one's body to "breathe" better; and energy, health and relaxation comprise our natural state. In this state we are more attuned to our surroundings and creativity flourishes." --could explain the dreams maybe
from http://purehealthsystems.com/msm.html interesting link. Cruciferous foods have it, but is lost during processing. I guess maybe that's the reason a lot of people eating a raw diet can't distinguish between the msm powder and eating those foods raw, because they are still getting it. ?

and I also know some of the local places I've checked for it have stopped selling it b/c people use it to make meth (I've checked 2 feed stores for a better deal, like that link suggested). And the health food store I visited a few weeks ago kept their small jars of it behind the counter for the same reason. I'm thinking of giving it to my dog for joints as well. They sell the huge 4 lb tubs for horses.

All MSM in supplements must be manufactured, making purification an essential step in the production of MSM. There are two methods by which MSM is purified-crystallization or distillation. OptiMSM is distilled for purity. Distillation is a process of purifying MSM that uses heat to separate pure MSM from impurities and by-products of manufacturing through unique boiling points. MSM's 460° F (238° C) boiling point allows pure MSM to be isolated from solution, producing the purest MSM available. In crystallization, the purity of MSM is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials and on the procedures used during manufacturing.
This from rawvegansource.com, the one they are selling....
hey everyone,
thanks for all your responses!
just thought id add - ive definitely noticed an increase in this and the past week of having multiple nightmares every night (of course its difficult to pinpoint this directly to the msm, but its interesting that other people have noted it too).
odd indeed.
