View Full Version : Fasting? Come... join me!

Okay I'm starting up a new thread since I'm now into my fast for the New Year and done with my pre-Yule/Christmas fast.
So... this time I'm fasting on whatever I feel like fasting on in the moment. It might be coconut mylk (liquid inside the young coconut), it might be a blend of the meat and mylk, (to gently slow down my digestion) it might be water, tea or a veggie/fruit juice. I'm not going to stress about keeping my digestion asleep, rather instead I'm focusing on allowing my body a rest from http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x87/recyclinggoddess/thicon_chew.gif eatingeatingeatingeatingeatingeating and eating some more. LOL
This is a very different fast for me... much different from the ones I've done before. Part of the reason I'm doing this is... when I did my green smoothie feast before Yule/Christmas I found my body not wanting anything blended anymore. It naturally went into a place of wanting pure juice and water only. I want to allow my body to do the same this time but honestly... I'm not into having any green smoothies (even though I have so much spinach in the fridge...) anyway... I'm just taking this day by day, moment by moment and allowing my body to lead the way.
Not sure how long I'll go... but I'd love some company. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x87/recyclinggoddess/prettyplease.gif
So... who wants to fast with me? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x87/recyclinggoddess/heap.gif
This is the commitment I make to my Self:
During this fast I am choosing to drink a minimum of 2 litres of water every day and as much juice as I choose.
If I'm only drinking water, I'll up my intake according to my body's desires.
I choose to only consume raw live juices and some very watered down blended juices (during the first week) and lots of water.
I will surround myself with Love.
I will remember to be kind with others and gentle with my Self.
If I'm grumpy, I'll go take a walk, light a candle, take a bath or meditate.
I will not end my fast on a bad day.
I will not end my fast today, but I can choose today to end it tomorrow.
I will remember that I am a cherished child of The God/dess and my spiritual beliefs, my body and other people's knowledge will guide me during my fast.

Guess who? I am online again. Yippie. I am still fasting every Mon, Tue & Wed as usual, however the big one begins again tomorrow. I was told in a very long Meditation to fast till the trees give birth again, so that is what I will do as we all know what happens when we do not listen.
My last lengthy fast was 153 days, who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Glad to be pack with the bandits again. Love ya FG & Aleesha

I was told in a very long Meditation to fast till the trees give birth again, so that is what I will do as we all know what happens when we do not listen.
I can relate.
I was told long time ago to fast til the cows crow
& the chickens come out to moo.
Now I embark on a path to remove the impediments.
Last long fast, meds stood in the way, kept me up late and
cut short my sleep. Then my guts started rumbling wildly,
then I got really sick. Don't like them meds much anyway. :D
Miss, you were lissed.

Well here it goes, day one once again. It is really cold out here so I am just going to take it easy. I have not fasted in this type of weather before. It was not this cold in Colorado and well Arizona was as you can imagine. giggling wish we were still there in many ways. I love warm! Guess I got a bit spoiled there.
I am fasting on water and may change it up when I feel it is necessary.
Yes FG I am back once again. How many times have we said that over the past two years? Whew - seems like many. It is what it is and who knows what will happen tomorrow. After all tomorrow is an assumption and I never worry about it.

Truth be told, with your survival skills, you will be far better prepared to deal with WHAT IS COMING than most people in our country will.
But, as always, good to have ya back.
BTW, my youngest son bought a motor home. It's parked right around the corner, for now. He's been mostly living in it, and comes over to use our bathrooms, and so forth. It seems his life is in perpetual Peter Pan mode.

HOpe ya'all's fasting was good! I am 3 days into my juice/green smoothie fast.
I am already reaping the benefits. Here it is...8 oclock at night, when I should be my heaviest, and I stood on the scale to weigh myself (I went to the bathroom 4 times today) and here I have lost 5 lbs, despite the 2 liters and 1 cup of water I had today!
Raw works.
Aleesh, I saw that you released 145 lbs in a year? I would love to hear more about that...did you exercise a lot..count calories, or just kind of let your body guide you.

Hey guys, Im here, . im here.
I even packed a suitcase and a truckload of water!
I will be in the fasting hotel for a while methinks :)
Today I plan on pure water,. but ive go some green/ginger juice in the fridge just in case i need a pick me up.
Days 1-5 are my tough times, after that its plain sailing.
Im living with lots of naysayers at the moment.. they disapprove of raw/fasting.
I think that will be my biggest challenge if anything else.:D
so here's to day one!

That's right FG I do have mad Survival skills, for this I am very proud of myself and grateful for the experiences we have come across in the past two years. We have learned a lot! We are ready for all that comes our way here very soon. Only I can not help to worry about the people that have no idea what is gonna hit them.
Day two today. Doing wonderful I am a happy camper in this moment. Going out very soon to pick some Rose Hips in the woods, looking forward to some healthy, wonderful, tasty tea. You all know how I am about the wild things in our life. giggling.
FG - A camper for the kid - Cool! One with tires is da bomb!! We have been looking for one as well, but ya know they all cost too much for us at this time, but if we are to have one the money will appear as it does when we are in need of things.
Have a blessed day of fasting everyone. Chat with ya later.

Isaiah bought his for just under $2000. I might have bought it myself if I had the cash flow. It is a 60s model, in very good shape. Such you can find for a good price, and given the age, EMP will not likely have any effect on the electronics in the dash. In Calif, they don't have to be smog certified before 1975. I imagine other states are similar, if they require smog cert at all.
The only concern, some motorhome/mobilehome parks do not allow RVs past a certain age. But that's no problem for a survivalist.

Whew, what a day. Had Rose Hip tea and it Rawked! Can hardly wait to wander the woods here to see what else is waiting to greet me. Alex thought walking thru all the snow to forage was a bit different. Another lesson for him as well, he said can we eat like this in the winter? I smiled.
I have others here at the commune that are fasting with me as well, they have been asking many questions etc etc. This one young kid asked me how long I have fasted for at one time and I told him. He said that if that were true I would be dead. I just smiled and called him a fool under my breath. LOL There was another that apparently had done his homework that backed me up. LOL I like it when I don't have to make people feel uncomfortable in their own skin...someone did that for me. insert evil grin.

Ok, it is day 4 or 5 for me and I just woke up with a deep down insatiable thirst for water. I think I need to flip for a day or half day of a water fast. I am not diabetic, but I am thirsty in way I haven't felt since my running days! I feel as if I have just ran 6 miles with only ONE water stop. It is this weird, deep down, dry/parched feeling that I can feel in the back of my throat, skin, and fingers. So. Water. Water. Everywhere! :D Hope your fasts are going well.

Have a great day too Beckx!
I went through about 90 ounces of water and some freshly juiced OJ this morning. I figure my body is getting some dirty out. In the begining, I lost like 8 lbs in 3 days. Now, some of that is just a lack of solids going in (i am sure) but one would also think that as the fat gets used up, whatever chemicals/toxins that was complexed with fat needs to be eliminated...so I figure the body is just trying to wash it away!
beckx
12-30-2009, 07:42 AM
quite possible. i'm down 5 pounds since monday - mostly lack of solid foods too i'm sure, but the dryness definitely could be detox. i also think i could be drinking too fast the last couple of days instead of sipping and maybe not giving my body time to absorb.
couldn't stomach the thought of green juice this morning so i'm treating myself to watermelon strawberry juice and thinking maybe i'll want the green stuff later.

good morning everyone! i drank 2 litres of water reading your posts LOL i was giggling cause you were discussing drinking water and there i was... drinking mine.
i totally agree, you are craving more water to flush out your organs. that's why i like to start every day of my fast with 1-2 litres of water. it's a good fasting habit to get into. then when you stop your fast, hopefully you'll continue with drinking that water first thing in the morning.

COol Aleesha, i love pineapple juice too, ill probably have that later on in my fast, im not feeling sweet juices at the moment, my body just wants lots of ginger, so thats what im taking :)
again, my juicer is broken , so im making my juices by blending and straining. its actually easier to clean up than the little fine wire mesh that comes with a juicer.
Thought id let you know things are moving slowly, my stomach has started grumbling again at me :)
I woke up this morning like a film had been lifted off my eyes,
sure feel better after a day of fasting.

Yes, lovely dreams, I guess they are a little weird, but I am also weird so it doesn't seem to faze me, hehe. :-)
Going thru some emotional detox today, angry at various people for silly reasons that seem to blow up into bigger issues in my mind. Just letting it all be...taking patience and compassion for myself and others. I know strong feelings are part of my detox process. Love my bed right now, so soft and cushy!

Aleesh, do you add salt?
Aleesha Sattva
12-30-2009, 07:22 PM
i do. i also add curry, kelp powder and cayenne. sometimes i juice some garlic and/or ginger as well. this one had some fresh lime in the juice as well. mmm mmm good.
i've ordered my smoked sea salt - but it hasn't arrived yet. i've been out for a long time (since my package from liss got lost in the mail). i'm thrilled to finally getting some again. i figure if i'm doing a long fast - i definitely need some smoked salt. i love the flavour in my tomato juice/soup.
Mnbordergirl
12-30-2009, 07:27 PM
so kelp powder is allowed on raw? How do these differ from Dulce flakes? Is one a better source of protein than the other?
Smoked sea salt sounds heavenly.
Oh. I dont supposed you guys saw the movie New Moon, where the vampires can smell the blood and have to leave the room? I was jsut at my neighbors and she was heating up pizza. And I could smell it. And then she was like, "Do you want a piece?" I had to leave. Could feel myself starting to get off the wagon. And in the hallway, I could smell fried fish! It is like the forces are conspiring for me to fail. But I am here, and thinking about how I got 3 tomatoes, and celery ..and I could juice those!
I never thought I would see the day where I would plug my nose and run from food! :D
Mnbordergirl
12-30-2009, 07:30 PM
So...to keep myself from falling off the wagon. I want to reinforce a wonderful thing that happened to me.
1) This morning, i could put a ring on the ring finger of my left hand! I havent been able to wear this ring in over a year.
2) I am clearly losing bloat, because at 8.30 tonight, I am able to put this very special ring on the ring finger of my RIGHT HAND. This finger is half a size bigger than that of the ring finger of the left hand. So, clearly, some bloat has been lost.
My green spinel looks especially beautiful on this right hand. And I am not going to mess it up now.

And I was quite literally just getting on here to say, "I'm going to go make some wonderful tomato soup - minus cashews - for dinner!"
Now I actually am. :D
I'm really enjoying the utter... SIMPLICITY... of this little Fast. However, I need to be drinking more water. My jeans started to slip down my waist even more today and John is giving me funny looks.
:D
I am not worried. I'm just shedding some residual bloating from the last little bout of Endo, 'tis all.

i ended up having just the watermelon juice and a little oj today... a little over 1/2 a gallon of juice + lots of water. i was feeling very grumpy around 6 but decided to go to my martial arts class. my stamina was lower than usual but i found that my performance was better on some of the jumping and spinning kicks. halfway through the two hour class i was feeling really good.
gonna take a shower and get ready for bed. night everyone!

Aleesha, is salt ok on juice fast? I remember reading somewhere that we are not supposed to take it during fasts.
This is still my first day (I suddenly decided at 1am last night that I was going to do this, lol)... I am planning to have fruit juices in morning and veggy juice at night plus veggy broth for the extra minerals.
Cheers to all!

first, i have no idea bout the dulse VS kelp question. i use kelp cause i love the taste of it.
and as for salt. a fast is what you make it. after all, a true fast is only water. nothing else. so any other allowances you make are just that... allowances. i choose to fast without rules or restrictions. i just allow myself to do what i need to in order to continue fasting. if that means i have tomato juice for dinner every night and pineapple for breakfast, then i do that. if it means i'm going to run a mile every day when i feel the need to eat, then i'll do that. whatever it takes is what i do. cause my focus here is to fast on liquids... raw live liquids. juice and water to be exact... and so whatever kind of juice that is, i'm game, and if i add a little salt, then so be it.
i look at my life and diet this way. i fast a lot, i eat raw live foods when i'm not fasting so if i choose to have salt, or honey, or agave, or cacao etc... then i'm happy and cool with that. after all... my diet is a million times healthier than 99% of the people who live in my small town... so my body is in a win/win situation no matter what. i don't have to become a purist to benefit from my lifestyle choices... every single choice i make is a plus, a bonus... a step in a much healthier direction that i was making 3 years ago. so i'm happy, joy-filled and tickled pink... even with a pinch of salt in my tomato juice *giggling*
so... hooloo if salt is not something you choose to have on your fast, then please follow your body and leave it out ;) but this fasting mama chooses to have it.
i hope this didn't come off grumpy cause i'm not... just wanted to share my opinion in a clear way. (((hugs)))

The reason why I asked about salt was not to start a fight. See, I LOVE salt but I also struggle with edema and bloating. Tomato juice, in my mind, is one of those things that NEEDS salt, so the question about salt should have been phrased as "what do you do to make salt-less tomato juice more palatable?" rather than "do you use salt?" But, when aleesha answered, "I used salt" I had my answer. ;)
With that said, I am totally blissing because there were a pair of "hand-me-down" gently worn Ralph Lauren pants that I got from a lady at church that I could not wear last week that I CAN WEAR today :D:):D
So, I am happy as a clam.

Heey :)
Im feeling wonderful today! my breath stinks and my mouth tastes yucky! but my body is embracing this fast.
I went for a good run today, about 1 hour in total, it was freezing cold, but It centred me,....I sat by the lake and meditated for about 10 minutes and ran back home.
I already feel lighter and more "connected". Im recieving lots more insights about situations that were bugging me,. I feel better than I have in weeks!
Im in a bit of a situation though as one of my best friends who also happens to be raw is having her birthday at a raw vegan restaurant we've wanted to try for months! but thats in 2 weeks time, I might transition to juices 3 days before, eat light at her do and go back to juice the next day, i dont know.. I'll see how I feel.,
I have so many other events coming up as well,. but I feel called to fast, especially with the way my body is at the moment, I have to!
Im so glad im fasting into the new year, and better still that im fasting with you guys!
im having ginger cravings again, . which usually happens when my body is doing some deep cleansing.
I also ordered some black soap today, its totally natural and handmade and made in the part Africa where I come from> ive never really been drawn to it, but today for some reason, I kept thinking about it and Ive ordered some.
Ive planned some photography to keep me busy when temptation arises as everyone in my house is still munching away from xmas.
Ive had water all day today, I might have a green juice later on.
Happy new year everyone! Here's to creating a joyous, abundant, new year!

Me, Myself and I all love you too, Aleesha. :D
I'm actually kind of proud of myself (oopsie) for fasting a total of 3 days out of the last 6.
I would like to educate myself more about Fasting! I know that ultimately "listen to your body" is the best advise, but I also want to know about what different Fasts are "out there" and how they apply to different needs for healing.
A Question for you Fasting Queens and Kings: what are your personal favorite resources (books, sites, tips, tricks) for Fasting? :) I would love to learn from you. Which brings me to my first question...
Question about Weight
It seems I lose a fair bit of weight in even just a few days of lighter/less/no eating, and it concerns my Sweetie that maybe Fasting isn't "healthy for Greenie".
(I'm currently quite slender -- have already lost over 10 lbs since starting my 90-Day All Raw Challenge -- and when He and I first got together (2 yrs ago), I was anorexic and struggling to put weight ON.)
I'm personally not too stressed because I'm fairly confident that I can gain back what I need to (if I need to) after the Fast... however, He noticed yesterday when my brand-new (second hand ;) ) jeans nearly fell off me... that was just after a few days of light eating and 2 days fasting.
Perhaps if there's a cleansing Fast out there that doesn't result in significant weight-loss (I can't lose more than 5 lbs at this point without looking like a shadow) I should approach Fasting with that, first?
Aleesha Sattva
12-31-2009, 06:35 PM
I can fast for weeks and barely release any weight at all... other times I release more. I believe our bodies are so much smarter than we give it credit for. It knows what we need and don't need. Remember, our memories and toxins are stored in our cells... so perhaps our body needs to release those old cells to bring in new healthier ones... so yes our weight can reduce but then our body rebuilds it again (in this new cleaner healthier level).
Melissa is very thin as well... and fasting hasn't (as far as I know) ever made her too thin. She's the fasting Goddess... with a 150+ long consecutive fast... *bows to her knowledge*
I personally LOVE Jeremy Safron's book "Dining from an Empty Bowl" and is, IMO a must read. It's short and sweet, gets to the point and lets you know many different kinds of fasts available to you. From fasting from sight, to fasting from food... and everything in between.
***Just a short note to everyone in this thread... Please remember to not discuss food here as others are fasting***

Say what? lol. I thought the Christians were supposed to be the loving ones.
And they normally are.. the normal ones, that is.
Sounds like you ran into some stuffy religionists, lol.
Well, as you know, there's all kinds out there.
Being of the historic Christian faith myself, I have been a part of various churches and ministry groups since the early-mid 70s, and I must tell you, the treasure is definitely in earthen vessels.
Compassion, Oh Compassion!
While on the subject, I love this quote by Ghandi:
I like your Christ.
I do not like your Christians..
They are so unlike your Christ.
What a wake up call for those who believe they have something to offer,
but forget that the Creator of the Universe is LOVE.
Or as John Lodge wrote (Moody Blues):
Each breath that we breathe
With love we must weave
To make us as one
You know it makes me want to cry, cry, cry..
("Isn't Life Strange?")
Well, day two was rough, but that was to be expected.
And I'm working 6 days in a row before I get a day off.

Hi there, i haven't contributed anything to rawfoodtalk for a long time. Was just browsing for inspiration. And found your thread. I am on day 8 of a water fast. i had intended to do the master cleanse, which i'd done up to 21 days on a few occasions, but after two days, i remembered how much i hated the taste of that stuff! Figured water was better. I've never done a water fast before. I am kind of bedridden, since i broke my foot 6 weeks ago, it will be another month before i'm walking. so perfect chance to rest. though i've got two public lectures tomorrow and the next day which i wish i hadn't agreed to do, as my energy is really low. and i feel my brain has slowed down too. i was expecting vibrant energy by now, but guess i've got lots of cleansing to do.
for anyone considering a fast, i recommend 'Fasting Can Save Your Life' by Sheldrake (herbert i think), he is considered one of the experts on fasting, and his advice was reassuring. Especially he said, don't try and get your colon working, it's not necessary, it will naturally work if it needs to, or will get a long needed rest. He also said only drink when you are thirsty otherwise you will give your kidney's unnecessary work.
So far, symptoms have been the usual white tongue, nausea for a few minutes in the evenings, and a nervous restlessness, which i understand is normal. i can't concentrate very well.
I also used my bed rest to create a book of raw food receipes and menu plans for 3 weeks, which i plan to use after the fast. Which has been fun, but probably not good for my fast, i swear looking at pictures of food, stimulates my appetite, because i still feel hungry after 8 days, which is not normal.
I'm planning to go for 30 to 40 days. i also want to lose weight, so that walking is easier. every extra kilo is a burden on the foot, which now has a metal plate, and 10 screws.
oh yeah, i have this metallic taste in my mouth a lot, and i wonder if all that metal is in my blood stream!
okay, I've said enough, get's a bit lonely being in bed all day, with no food to distract me!
Good luck to you all

the theory that we heal 120 days with every day of fasting
I am curious about this theory - I think I am going to go with it as a timeline for emotional junk I want to rid myself of. I know there's a bunch locked up in my body that is blocking good energy and chi flow.....
Aleesha, I couldn't find it, but I think it was you who said green juice is healing and fruit juice is cleansing?? Do I have this right?
Green juice question - juice made from greens or does this include green veggies (celery) and green non-sweet fruits (peppers) as well?
Cheers all!!

Best of luck. It would be interesting to know what might have caused this condition. It appears some things are hereditary. Other conditions are brought on, or at least exacerbated, by diet. If you don't mind sharing, have you suspected anything from past eating patterns? Were you raised on any particular diet? Oh, this is a fasting thread so it's not really fair of me to ask.. so maybe tell us in general terms?

rawruh, welcome to our little community of fasters! i would say that definitely the metal taste in your mouth is from your surgery. what a great way to heal ... water fasting! good for you!!!
staying away from talk about food (hence why we ask people not to discuss food in this thread) and staying away from recipes is so important when fasting. everything looks waaaaaay too good when you are fasting LOL it's broken many a fast for me till i figured out to stay away from certain threads and books :)

Juice made with cucumber actually feels SOOTHING and velty in my stomach...I juice it with carrots.
For me, hunger is PAINFUL. I discovered that most people when hungry dont find it painful but I do...seriously the pain is as about as sharp as a dislocated shoulder (my perceptions).
I find that cucumber carrot juice (more cucumber less carrot) really take the bite out of the pang.

A new word for the FB glossary might be..
Citrus Sucking
Citrus Sucking - Sucking the juice out of citrus, such as an orange, while being careful not to swallow any of the pulp.
This is great in an emergency, when energy is dropping and juice is not readly available. Keeping a few oranges around makes for a good practice. In situations like this, your mouth becomes the juicer. ;)

Ah, the memories of a nostalgic item from my youth.....
We still have a couple utensils for this. As a kid we called them orange squeeters (google citrus squeeter to see one). You'd roll an orange around in your hands to juice the insides a bit, insert the squeeter which is like a wide short straw with one serrated end and a mouthpeice, and drink up.

Strain it through your :D. You get a tad I guess, but I guess the idea is that the plug of orange peel that gets punched out blocks the large end of the straw and it is slots in the side of the tube that somewhat strain the juice.

Well, i was supposed to be talking at a conference today, but getting washed and dressed was like a marathon, huffing and puffing, and totally exhausted afterwards, so i cancelled. i have no energy! My heart must have slowed right down. i also live on 3rd floor of an apartment building, with no lift! Which is no joke with a broken foot. i have another speaking engagement tomorrow evening which i can't avoid, so i decided to start having orange juice instead of just water in order to get some energy. Even mentally, i have no energy. So, that's me for the water fast, for now anyway! Maybe i'll go juice/water/juice depending on how much activity is required from me.

Rawruh - Usually, it's best to progress from juices to water, depending on the condition of your body. Water alone can be extreme, especially if there are demands on you. Best of wishes on your speaking engagements.

Well, I am happy because I did my official weigh in today and have lost another 5 lbs! This puts me under --0!!:) So, i am glad I kept it raw when I fell off the wagon this weekend. I dont appear to have done too much damage.
Yesterday I had my dandelion green smoothies. BTW. How old are the dandelion greens that you put in your smoothies. Mine were about as tall as my knees and the plant person here at the office is like.."No. NO. When you eat weeds like dandelions or plantains you need to make sure they are short little sprouts otherwise they are bitter." I would like to continue using dandelions in my smoothies since they are an alternative to kale and spinach and I am mildly concerned about alkaloids building. So whatever insights you got on the youngness of the shoot I will take.
So since I have gone raw + juicing+fasting i have lost 31 lbs. NOt bad for 3 months. Not bad at all.
And now, I can wear NEW York & Co jeans that I inherited from the lady at church... They are all studded with the studs in a cool star shape.
This way of eating rawks!

Day Two - just water so far. Have my tea steeping and my lemonade made and some kombucha in the fridge. Yesterday afternoon I got a debilitating headache and some nausea in the evening after my walk. i have stinky nose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm so excited... i have stinky nose!!!
when i fast... i get this smell in my nose... it finally arrived this morning. of course it's totally gross but it's like an old stinky friend who i missed so much *giggling*... and now it's back!!!!
i'm still in such a great mood, high spirits and i JUST woke up LOL today will be another amazingly magickal day indeed. my Reiki client arrives at 11 for her final session, she'll be back in a couple of weeks for another round of 4. i love working with her.
i've seen those citrus suckers before... never knew what they were for... i always tried to pour the juice out *laughing hysterically at myself* now i know!
rawruh, water fasting can really kick you in the pants... i know it has for me on many occasions. so ya adding juice to your day will bring your energy up heaps!!! AND green juice will heal that foot of your faster than fruit juices... but you will still heal with fruit juices.
i often go a day on water... few days on juice... day or two on water... more juice days etc when i fast. mixing it up is nice. also... if i get into a slump while fasting, i'll usually toss in a water fast for a few days to a week to change things up for myself. (this is during extended fasts lasting 45+ days)
mn, congrats on the weight release... i'm 10 pounds from my semi-goal weight exactly today LOL
oh and dandelion greens are super bitter the bigger they get. always use the baby leaves... ;) i don't know if the bigger are unhealthy but i know i can't tolerate them. but then you have to know... i don't like em young either.

Well, this day started out very rough. Again, not much sleep last night due to meds. I take a little less every morning and am down to 1/4 of a tablet.
Later this day, my energy picked up quite a bit, though still very toxie. Interesting how negative thoughts are both by choice (consent) and also tend powerfully from physical depletion. There's a lot of thought in that. A great study.

Have you ever considered completing a true fast, which is completed with only drinking water?
Water-only fasting is the only way to give your body complete rest...but should be completed with supervision.
Greetings Emilia
I have to ask you, and I certainly mean no offense, but have you had the occasion to do an in-depth study on fasting? While water fasting is likely the oldest form of fasting, it is by no means the only true fast.
Any pure juice, entirely devoid of the pulp, offers the body deep rest, in that the intestinal process of peristalsis ceases. In fact, "hunger" sensations (which are really just stomach contractions) cease altogether after three days, for most people.
(Peristalsis is a radially symmetrical contraction of muscles which propagates in a wave down the muscular tube. In humans, peristalsis is found in the contraction of smooth muscles to propel contents through the digestive tract.)
As such, energy levels arise dramatically, free of the burden of digestion, which requires an enormous amount of energy. The body then turns voraciously to its cleansing and other housekeeping chores.
It is true that water fasting is more thorough and efficient in deeper tissue cleansing. Thus the serious "healing crisis" and oft-needed bedrest that tends to occur with water only. These, of course, are proportionate to how pure or toxic-laden the body already is. It also relates with age, diet and medication history, environment, as well as one's overall medical condition.
A water fast need not be medically supervised if one is cautious, studied (mindful of all these factors), and confident in what they are doing. However, it would not hurt to have supervision if affordable and available. (Most medical insurance does not cover the majority of holistic practice, and mainstream medicine is ignorant of its virtues, having an entirely different orientation.)
The great minds in the history of natural therapies, particularly the great fasting authorities, who become virtually "required reading" within the schools of holistic health thought, are not in agreement, themselves, on which is the best way to fast.
Furthermore, water fasting may be specifically not recommended in some cases, depending on the condition of one's body. Especially prolonged water fasts, which could get one in a trainload of trouble if they are not ready for it. Thus the term "Rational Fasting", an absolute classic book by Arnold Ehret - forerunner of the raw food movement.
Also, some folks have rigorous obligations, i.e. working, where such a deep & demanding process such as water fasting might not be practical, or even possible.
Dr. Paavo Airola touts juice fasting as the ultimate.
Paul C. Bragg is a total water proponent.
Stanley Borroughs offered the Master Cleanse,
consisting of water, lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.
All are good. Really good. As for what is best..
the truth lies in what your body needs at the time.
Love & blessings..

Hi Aleesha
I would like to do my first long fast. I'm going to go for 30 days but I hope to last at least 60 days. I will be seeking all the advice and encouragement that I can get. I need a serious detox and weightloss. I need to lose about 110 - 125 pounds. I feel overwhelmed but my body is starting to crash on me. I can't sleep and that's why I'm blogging at 2:10 am and I checked my blood pressure the other day and it is pretty high, 135/100. I feel stressed out and a little depressed. I know it's because I have fallen off the wagon and I need to give myself a fresh new start in a fresh new year. My body will thank me for it.

Of course, every time I look at the flame, I am also reminded of her and send more... so it's also like a little reminder...
Adiva,
Fasting is a great way to kick start your weight release and new way of eating. I hope you've given some thought to your diet AFTER the fast... cause fasting doesn't release weight that stays gone unless you feed it healthy foods afterwards.
But we are all here for ya, as you begin this journey. Remember... some days will be very hard... others notsomuch... but it's worth it if you can continue.
Have you fasted before? A 30-60 day fast is a long fast for a first timer. I did 9 or 10 days for my first fasts. I'd fast then eat for a week, then fast, then eat... fast again. In between fasts I ate only live raw foods... and eventually fasted less and spent more time eating. Then months later... I had released pretty much all my weight and I began fasting for spiritual reasons. The fasts I did in the beginning always assisted me to kick start my weight release if I hit a plateau... which was nice... but the true weight release was in my eating times, not my fasting times.
~~~
Today is a day of water I think... perhaps some tea. I'm actually starting to enjoy my tea. I'm shocked... never really liked it much but I'm getting into tea! *shocked face* Of course the fact that it's chilly out and tea is warm may have something to do with it. LOL
I have a raw honey farm near me... I'm off to pick up some more honey today. Their lemon honey is my favourite and I'm all out. Of course their ginger honey is divine in ginger tea! They have approx 50 different honeys... might even pick up some blackberry honey...
*skips off... totally in the zone and loving it*
Start my fast in one day!!! stocked up today on some great organic veggies!! Bring it on!!!
Good to know MissLinda is "on the mend" :) more positive energy sent her way!!
Started feeling not so special last night....had a bm :D but that was followed by severe stomach cramps :( Hubby renamed them "love twisties" and that positive slant enabled me to fall asleep. Woke this morning filled with anxiety and sadness and negitivity. I know my body is letting go of built up emotional junk and that's exactly what I wanted so my mantra for the day is..... I recognize these feelings and release them from my body....
good mantra to have!!! a warm bath may help as well... also a gentle ab massage. start at the lower right side of your ab and massage up to your belly button... across to the left and back down again. so a square without the bottom line.
did NOT sleep well last night at all. felt like i was high on caffeine. my mind was just so awake but my body was tired so i laid there and allowed myself to kinda meditate most of the night.
i am so ready for today!!! plan on water and coconut water. tomorrow is a potluck and i'm hoping to take either cantaloupe/blackberry juice OR mango/apple as a little treat for myself but i may just take a couple litres of coconut water. we'll see.
nope... too young. i'd never allow my 10 yr old to fast. not my 16 yr old either. it is my opinion that only adults should fast.
but my hubby... that man could use a good fast!!!
sipping on some detox yogi tea... with lemon honey. had a couple of coconut waters today. other than that... not much at all.
drank a bit of water... but i'm not really into much in this moment... i am rather dizzy when i get up though.
i am so used to being cold that when i'm not cold... i feel weird LOL i actually crave the coolness of fasting... especially at night. now that said, i still sleep with two pairs of long underwear, wool socks and three shirts on... cause my core body temp has a hard time keeping me warm otherwise.
AND i'm sandwiched between flannel sheets with a super warm blanket below me and another on top of me and then my amazing down comforter over top...
I am softening my intake in anticipation of a quick fast, but haven't made up my mind as to when or how I will proceed with it, if I do. My joints have become sore so some of the old allergen foods tested are still a problem...I would like to clear out what I tested with, nanners, celery, onions, etc. Fasting has always helped speed that up. Refraining from them a while longer and eating right or juicing a couple days should take care of it though.
You mentioned allergens, which caught my eye. We are not sure where allergies come from, how they come about, or whether they even really exist, depending on what school of thought you go by. Is it merely hereditary? (We cannot entirely discount hereditary weaknesses.) Or symptomatic of a different root problem? Modern medicine seems to be the last to know. Many, many symptoms masquerade as something else. Often, surface manifestations are rooted in something entirely unrelated.
I would not offer any simplistic or dogmatic answers. But I wanted to ask you, have you ever done the liver/gall bladder cleanse? This is one thing that's been reported to "clear up" allergies. More likely, removing a root cause, in the cases of some people.
Did you suffer from these allergies from early childhood? Or was it a development later in life? If later, then perhaps it would be more acquired than "hereditary."
Either way, if you haven't done the liver/GB cleanse, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I myself have never suffered from allergies. But I have done the cleanse 7 times, and will again later this year. It is ENTIRELY PAINLESS.
Here's the Alissa Cohen/Hulda Clarke recipe that I used.
(Alissa simplified it very nicely).
There are others as well.
Hello fasting pals!!
Made it through Day 1... yippie!! When fasting in the past, Day 1 was always the hardest to get through for me... yes, i did feel hungry a few times, but got through it much easier for some reason! I taught a class today on therapeutic juicing and made a spicy carrot juice with spinach, broccoli, ginger, cinnamon and cayenne... pretty tasty.... then I did celery and grapes... very refreshing especially after the spicy carrot :p then I did one of my absolute fave's: green lemonade!!! Deeee lish!!!
later today i just juiced a combination of "stuff" i had in fridge, celery, alfalfa sprouts, apple, lemon, spinach.... came out pretty good, too!!! Then I took a wonderful ES bath and sweat some of dem darn toxins rite outta me!!!! Now I'm a sittin with my soft flannel pj's on sipping water with a couple pieces of lime in it!!! a happy camper for sure!!! looking forward to bedtime really soon, too!!!
Hope you're all receiving many blessings with your fasts!!
i just had some tomato juice... and i had to literally force it down. it was not yummy at all. i figure it's cause i'm so in the water/coconut water zone... that nothing else is yummy.
i am sipping on some coconut water to change the taste in my mouth from the tomato and we are leaving in a few to the potluck. i'm bringing my love tea (fasting yogi tea) with me.
i can't imagine it being hard for me, cause i'm sooo in the zone.
you know what i find works better... with less pulp entering my mouth. if i cut part of orange/lime/lemon etc open on one end and then bite down on the skin of the fruit. my teeth push the juice out of the open end and i get almost zero pulp this way!
anyway... here i am ... fasting at the party tonight and i didn't have even the slightest desire to eat. none at all. i am so in the zone... i know i keep saying that, but i am. it's soooo freakin' cool to be here.
blissing out i am... i am i am i am
some people asked me how long i plan to fast... i just said, "oh i'll be eating by thanksgiving" they smiled and then it would dawn on them... and they'd say "BUT THAT'S OCTOBER!" i just giggled... and said, "yes it is".
it's nice cause they think i'm joking and it took the edge off the whole "you are fasting HOW long?" thing that often happens at these type of things.
i had a lovely time... watched intently while a friend sitting beside me ate. i was amazed at how it didn't make me want to put food in my mouth... LOL he probably thought i wanted to steal his dinner though *giggling*
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fasting is bliss and i'm soooo in my bliss. i kinda feel like i'm meditating all the time and yet i'm not. i haven't been in the meditating zone... but i feel like i am. i know this probably doesn't make sense... but it's like the peace and clarity and mindfulness that comes from meditation is within me every second.
Hi, a bit late in replying, a lot of water, or juice under the bridge in a few days!
Thanks for everyone's feedback regarding my weakness when water fasting. Especially when having obligations to fulfill. i did drink orange juice for a couple of days, which helped. and now i've gone off the fast, but on to raw, which is good, because before the fast, i was eating 80% raw and 20% chocolate! Do not think i'm joking! I completed 10 days liquid which was a big boost for my confidence and for my health. And i will definately try another fast (maybe juice), when i am able to walk and get to the fruit shop and clean the juicer with ease.
I got my cast off on Tuesday, and the doctor said i didn't even need physio. Just need to start putting pressure slowly. I am sure that even this short fast helped the healing and circulation.
Alessha, it just dawned on me, how long you plan to fast! Wow! I hope to be so detached from food at some point - soon! It is really a huge step in one's spiritual evolution.
Bless you all
Fasting really assists me detach from food. That's one of the things I love about it. I find that after I fast, if I get interested in food... it doesn't last long. I get bored of eating and then fast again. At least that's how the year was that I fasted 262 days.
Who knows what this year will bring me!
Odd but not weird dreams last night... super tired this morning... taking it easy.
i have two juicers. a champion and a greenstar. my fav juice is definitely pineapple with spirulina in it. my second fav is apple/parsley/ginger.
i don't believe in enemas or colonics for me... i believe in allowing my body to do what it needs to do on it's own. so... i just let my body be.
IF i feel i need assistance... i make an apple juice and drink it down. that always gets things moving!
congrats on day 2!
Funny.. I went out "to eat" with wifey, son & his wifey. Their plates were piled high and my juice was going fast. So I added water to it. Well, I didn't want to steal their lunch, but I sure felt funny. Maybe it's a little early in the fast. Morning all....Day 8 - holy cow! I'm now been fasting twice as long as I have before!
Weekend went really well. Lots of negativity and saddness leaving my body this morning and for that I am grateful. I just have to remember my mantra and breath through it.
I think (as I am still a very new faster) I will go a day or two longer then take a break then possibly fast again (a la Aleesha - just seems like such a healing process you went through). I really wanted to get back to 2007 (looking at the 120 days/1 fasting day theory) and I am there now and can feel it.
Going to see if I can afford and Illumination this weekend as I see it as a great way to end the fast and I'll be right where I need to be to let go of emotion and pain I have been holding on to since that time.
Hope everyone has a great day! :)
what is an Illumination? *curious*
Let's see what day is it *goes to check blog* It's Day 18. I'm so surprised, usually it takes 21 days for me to get into the zone and really feel like I'm fasting. The first 21 days are usually "foreplay" for me. But this time... I'm in it... deep...
This is so cool.
So Thursday will be Day 21 for me. Hope the next 21 days are as bliss-filled... although from my fasting experience, I don't expect that to be so. Fasts change... sometimes in the blink of an eye. It can be so easy and then BAM like a brick wall it changes. So even though I say I'll be eating by Thanksgiving, it could be sooooo much sooner than that. I have no expectations of this fast, nor of myself. I'm just going with it.
Illumination (from the website of the spa I go to...)
Energy medicine based on ancient Incan shamanic healing. Sessions may include strengthining of the energy feild and clearing chakras of subconscious karmic ancestrial patterns.
Soul retrevial sessions transforming old wounds into sources of strength and the retrevial of last soul parts and power animals.
I have to look at home but I have a great site that my practioner gave me. She's also a Reike master and massage therepist. I am only hoping she's around right now becasue I know she is enrolled in another energy healing course.
Fasts change... sometimes in the blink of an eye. It can be so easy and then BAM like a brick wall it changes.
This sounds very familiar. In my view, this can be relieved by controlling the flow of toxins. For instance, if there's too much toxic "outflow" :eek:, and assuming one wishes to slow this down, changing "intake" could make a big difference. Changing the mix from, say, hi-fruit juice, to more veg juice might work.
Of course, a strict water fast or MC leaves no room to "tweak" the fast.
And getting enough rest is vital during these transition times.
Getting high on the energy and shorted on sleep
can certainly take its toll after a while.
Fasting is a delicate matter, isn't it?
Day 9 and I am nearing the end~
Will very slowly begin to break my fast over the remainder of the week. Will continue to fast throughout the day then discover what my body needs in the evening.
I decided last evening that if I awoke in good spirits with a good amount of my emotional detoxing/cleansing done, then I would begin the transition today.
I feel great about these 9 days. I feel lighter this morning, I feel I have gained an understanding, I feel awash in positive energy. I know I CAN and WILL..... Looking forward to energy work this weekend for deeper cleasning.
Entertaining the possibility of fasting again in another 8-10 days, I will check in with my body and spirit regarding this at that time. :)
Good morning Bandits!!! I'm jumping in your Fasting train today!!!
I've been thinking about this and hovering... Reading how blissful you are Aleesha is inspiring me!!!! I feel the need to take a break from dehydrating and food for a while.
In the past, I have successfully done 10 days. I'd like to do at least that, although I'm really hoping for 30....but we'll see what it turns into...
I can't even touch Water fasting because I feel like my life is too busy, but I feel ok with doing 1/2 juice 1/2 water. When I go to work I may feel the need to take a Green smoothie watered down, but we'll see. I'm not supposed to do another Whole Foods until Feb 20th, so if my fasts lasts 30 days I'll quit a week or so before I have to do that.
I even told DH about it this morning, so he's not gonna expect me to eat for a while. He seems ok with it...remembering how I didn't DIE on the last one!!!! As long as I'm happy on my fast, he'll support me on it.
just water, coconut water and tea today... not even slightly interested in juice. went to a juice bar for hubby to get something... and i didn't get anything for myself. on top of that... we were out all day... so i'm pleased with my energy and lack of desires...
Hey All!
On Day 5 today and feeling magical! Aleesha, this time around, I find myself wanting more water and tea as well; doing lots of hot lemonade, sometimes with a teeny bit of agave, sometimes maply syrup... I LOVE the way my innards are resting and feel so peaceful :p I got inspired from you, A, and bought a pineapple; have never juiced one before.... do you just put through juicer without peeling it? seems it could get pretty messy! I'm excited to try it though...
Have been doing lots of green lemonade, too with romaine, apple, ginger, lemon to which i added a few red grapes.... oooo ~ weeee.....Yummy!!!
Wishing you all many healing blessings on your juicing journey!! ;)
I feel brilliant/vibrant/focused like a lazer today. I woke up at 4.30 and got to work immediately. No coffee needed or anything.
I like feeling this way, energized without the crazies. I think lasers must feel like this all the time.
Anyway, no weight released. But i am still having fun taking my rings on and off and wearing my Ralph lauren pants.
Maybe something will give soon.
Time is on your side. ;)
Welcome Renee!
Day 13 here for me. This fast is clearly about The Total Fast for me.
That means a LOT of INWARD stuff to purify out.
Sometimes the process is grievous, but in the end,
yields "the peaceable fruits of righteousness."
May everyone have a beautiful day fasting!
Love, blessings..
Wow that's a really tall expectation my friend. Fasts are NOT always happy... as a matter of fact, in the past I've been grumpy more often than happy while fasting. It releases energy from your body and that energy isn't always happy energy.
So hopefully you were referring to "pleased with your fast" rather than "happy in mood" :)
I'm so thrilled to have you fast with me. This is a first!!!
how about some raw honey instead of agave or maple syrup?
pineapple... okay make sure all the peel is off or your lips will feel like you have been drinking fiberglass! then just cut it into 'fingers' and put it through the juicer. it can take a few go throughs to get all the juice. sometimes i even put the pulp into a nut mylk bag and squeeze the rest out - cause it's so wonderfully delicious i want to get every drop!
i looooove adding spirulina to my pineapple juice. i put my juice in a mason jar, add the spirulina, put on the lid and shake shake shake!!!
i'm finally spending a day at home. looking so forward to this. have a friend coming over for a reading and we may do some Reiki... we'll see what happens. we are definitely going to be doing some meditating together though... so it'll be a great day!
oh and one more thing about pineapples... i often buy them and then leave them in the fridge for a week before juicing them. also, you can cut off the top or bottom and sit it on a plate for a day... that does something (can't remember in this moment) and can make the pineapple less "sharp" if you find it's still a little sharp when you juice this one (you could do it for the next one)... but honestly, i only find a problem if i leave some of the outer 'shell' on.
pineapple 101 is over... there will be a test later *giggling*
