View Full Version : Could someone kindly coach me in growing mini-greens?

I'm hoping a raw friend out there is available to get me going growing mini-greens.

What kind of containers would be ideal? Can I make do with those plastic tubs that lettuce come in? Would I need to punch holes in the bottom to let them drain?

Would organic soil that you buy bagged be appropriate? Or should I add something to it?

I'm in Oregon. Would greens thrive just at a southern-facing window or do I need to boost it with a grow light?

How about sunflower sprouts as a start? Buckwheat too, huh. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Peace from Portland, Oregon

I'm digging around You-tube for some info on it.

Granted, I tend to overcomplicate things, but I tried one batch of sunflower sprouts and the hulls never popped off of the sprout heads. So, I'm still on the learning curve with this, but I'm eager to start harvesting microgreens.

sproutpeople.com has some info on microgreens. I am on my first batch of sunny's, but I started with hulled seeds. Those folks have a pretty good rundown on how to grow and/or sprout each type of seed that they offer.

I'm also interested in growing micro greens. I'm on my third tray of sunflower seeds though.

While a lot of the hulls have fallen off, not all of them have. What I do it cut a bunch and lay them on the counter. Then I can see if I've got any hulls to hand pick off or any roots to trim.

I find they take a while to cut and pick over - but boy are they good! But they're definitely not as quick and easy as tossing in some alfalfa sprouts.

I really love the fact that they couldn't be any fresher though! I cut them and then I eat them. *Ü*

Yeah, it's one thing to eat raw food, and yet another to eat food that is still alive.
