Hello:
I'm relatively new to the raw community--been reading about the lifestyle for a year, and have been at least 80% raw for two months.
I wanted to ask if there any other raw fooders who have thyroid problems and if they find certain foods help with thyroid function.
I'm not a stereotypical person with underactive thyroid--I have NO thyroid and lack 3/4 parathyroid glands. In March 2004, I had a total thyroidectomy as cancer had eaten most of my thyroid and spread throughout the lymphatic system of my neck. I was nineteen at the time and not utterly surprised as I had been diagnosed with Hashimoto's of 13--an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland.
I know many raw fooders find they ultimately stop taking their medication, though I am not holding out hopes for this--not that I think synthetic thyroid hormone is great either.
Anyway, I read that maca can help with thyroid function, though I'm not sure if that is applicable to those of us without a thyroid!
Any ideas on foods to consume for possibly benefit and any to avoid?
Okay. I'm very curious to know if there are any other raw fooders who have dealt with the effects of thyroid cancer. (In total honesty, I have never felt 100% again--even with raw food. :( )
XOXO
Hi ~ While I still have my thyroid, mine was ablated (killed with radioactive iodine) - twice. However it still does maintain a small amount of function. I take Armour Thyroid (180mg sublingually), which I find works better for me than Synthroid or Levoxyl.
I wish I could tell you I feel wonderful (etc.) because I'm raw - but to be honest, I don't. I feel good though.
I can't really answer your questions, but just wanted to post for support! I accept that I'll be on meds for this. One thing I can say though, is I have been able to lower my doseage.
I do take maca daily. I was taking 1 tablespoon but that's too much for me. I'm now trying 1 teaspoon daily.
Best wishes to you! *Ü*
Yes, no thyroid here to due to non-Hodgkins lymphoma and a harsh course of chemo and radiation therapy. I take generic Synthroid once a day, .125 mg. I'd like to get off it, but at present know I can't. Its the only prescribed medicine that I take.
I was ill for several years before I was finally diagnosed. The doctors couldn't find out what was wrong with me. I now realize I had all the classic symptoms of NHL, but no one caught it. One day my neck swelled up. I couldn't eat or swallow, and a chest X-ray showed that my windpipe had been pushed way over to the side. The doctor diagnosed me with thyroiditis and he immediately scheduled me for surgery to remove the thyroid. It wasn't until the surgeon opened my neck that they found the cancerous tumor and realized what was wrong. THEN they did a biopsy and I went through the course of treatment.
That's been 6 years ago and compared to the way I felt before being diagnosed, I feel great now. The year following chemo/radiation I felt lousy, but eventually I gained my strength back. Maybe I don't feel as good as I might with a working thyroid, but I feel as though I have more energy now than I ever did.

.88 synthroid. i don't think you can support a thyroid that isn't there, but it's a good question for your endo.
i've complained that i've never felt 100% either. i think i feel best on raw/high raw. right now, i feel pretty good -- but i ebb and flow with that.
i think i'd recommend eating a wide array of raw and just seeing how you feel after certain foods/meals.
hugs!

Just found out I have hypothyroidism. Just started on medication for it.
I can tell you that I have been tested for thyroid problems since the age of 10 and they never found anything until now. When I read the symptoms...I was like...oh....my...gosh....this has been what's wrong for my entire life! How could they not see that? But they really only see tests and numbers. What is average for one person isn't enough for someone else. Oh, well.
I can tell you that I started raw several years ago because of such major fatigue I was desperate. It worked. I was not only thin for the first time ever...I felt great too.
I still have a pretty good functioning thyroid that simply needs a bit of help, but raw definitely made me feel much much better.
I'm looking forward to being able to get back to it after the holidays. ;)
May God bless you all with healthy and happy holidays. (((HUGS)))

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. It does just help to know there are other people out there, raw and still with thyroid dysfunction.
Also, since others were posting the dosages, I'm on 225mg of generic synthroid a day.
Love to you all!!!

I had thyroid cancer about 5 years ago as well - and I wanted to also say that I agree, I have felt like crap since.....I take 0.15 mg daily of Synthroid.
I had a total thyroidectomy - papillary with follicular variant.

Has the raw diet helped you at all?
Also, the dosage seems so low in comparison to mine. My normal doctors aren't exactly knowledgeable about thyroid issues, so they prescribed a dose far too low for proper suppression. The specialist corrected it immediately and I started to feel better.
:/
Hugs and love to you!

I am awaiting a diagnosis of Hashimoto's right now, blood work should be in next week (5 people in my family have it, including my father). Have Hypothyroid, found out 3 yrs ago (but had it for many yrs undiagnosed!). My hypothyroid is not typical, so i am not sure raw will completely heal it. But I can say that being raw I feel the best. Great, amazing, wonderful? Not really, but better than on any other way of eating.
Am currently on 1 grain of Armor, and was at 2 1/2 up til my adrenals crashed in august. Am trying to work my way back up without crashing my adrenals again. I can also say that in armor vs synthetics, armor wins dramatically. Have been on both and won't go back to synthetics again.
Hang in there, you'll find lots of support here, you are definately not alone!
Matt Monarch just posted a 3 part video on the Thyroid, he filmed a man who had his thyroid killed (by RAI). You may find some useful information here.

I should watch those. After my two surgeries to remove all of my thyroid I had to do RAI twice to ablate (kill) whatever trace amounts were there. =(

I have been on this dose for a few years......they say my TSH levels are undetectable.....?! I do have blood tests yearly and apparently I am "supressed" enough for their liking....blah it's all confusing!
