John Baron (in The secrets of the miracle doctors) says that you should have crushed flax seeds twice a day but I have always assumed that he means "at least twice a day"

I usually put about a tablespoon of whole flax in my smoothie. Works!

Um...take a flax seed and try to chew it. For me, adding a bunch into something whole, they come out  whole too.

I grind.

They are all ready cold milled and I'm adding to smoothies. So they are pretty easy to digest!! :)

As soon as they are milled they begin to go rancid so it is better (if you can) to get the little grinder and just do it yourself. It is also cheaper and has the added advantage of knowing that you are using good seed. I sometimes worry that they put the crapier ones in things that are going to be processed.

I would like to add flaxseed to my smoothies but they eh, ahem:o give me bad gas. Does this go away once the body is used to it?

If the flax isn't processed/ground well, then not only will you not get the nurients out of them that you want but (depending on your circumstance)you will also run the risk of direticulitis.

Make sure you are either buying flax oil, or are processing it enough to actually get the nutrition you are looking for. Chewing it up won't do and most blenders are not going to get the job done that you need.

By the way, this is true for all seeds.

Hope that helps

blenditallguy - if you are still around - why do you say chewing won't work? I thought it looked pretty hard and imposs to chew but I have actually been chewing it and eating that way and it seems to work. I notice the benefits I get from it so I assume I must be getting the nutrients. Can you tell me if there is anything wrong with chewing it or you just think it wouldn't be effective?
I put some in my blender which is not a vitamix etc and couldn't taste any hard bits either so assume it was all ground down..

When y'all are saying "it works" what is it doing for you?

good question... what are the benefits of flax?

I have a coffee grinder... so that will probably work with grinding the seeds

I was a flax seed fan long before I went raw.
I discovered many years ago that if I went too long without them I would begin to have night cramps in my legs.
I do not know what they do for me but I am definite that they do it.

By the way, are crushed flax seeds sold in health stores always raw? Or could it be possible that they were over-heated while being dried? I've just bought a package of crushed flax seeds but am somewhat suspicious... It doesn't say explicitly on the package that it's raw, neither could I find information on producer's web-site.

helps dry skin.
Flax is very sensitive to heat so can't be heated too much or would be rancid. Not sure if all flaxseed meets technical raw requirement.
