View Full Version : vodka OK for raw foodies?

Did I misread Juliano's "RawGuru interview", or did Juliano say Skyy Vodka can be consumed in a raw diet? http://www.rawguru.com/html/julianointerview.html
Does anyone have an opinion about this? Pro or con, I'd love to know. Is vodka "ok" for a 100% raw foodie who has no history of abuse/addiction personally or in their family? In my profession, it would be a blessing if I could have a vodka on the rocks with clients and colleagues!
Thanks!

Why would anyone that was trying to be healthy put vodka into their system?

As far as I know Vodka is heat processed and not considered raw.
I did not read the Juliano article though, but this is common knowledge...
So if you are trying to be 100% pure raw I would avoid...
Wine is fermented and not heat treated, so it is considered ok
while raw if you choose to consume alcohal. Organic is a better wine choice
if available. There is also an unfiltered
sake that is not heat treated, but I am not sure the name of it.
www.purerawcafe.com makes martini's out of the sake.
Again this is *your*
lifestyle and you have to decide what fits into your lifestyle raw or not and
how pure you want to go. If you are going thru health problems
or would like to see a bigger leap in your health, I would limit your
alcohal consumption (this is from my personal experience).
Cheers

Ok I just read the article...it was short and sweet LOL
Yes, it did say he used SKYY Vodka, hmm....very interesting...
but it didn't go into much detail... like when and in what he used
it in?!?!? I don't think it was a very deep or enlightening
interview....
I still go with Vodka is not considered raw and to avoid
if going 100% pure raw.
Chime in if anyone knows if Vodka is raw!??!?!?

I do not know if vodka is raw or not, though I do doubt it. However, I do know it is a highly toxic poison and one that your organs and system are going to have to struggle to deal with. There is nothing in it that will nourish your cells. Quite the opposite. It is something your body will have to detox.
It is definitely a personal choice, I agree. I am not judging at all, I just wouldnt want someone to unkowingly undo the benefits of their raw diet. Maybe the best way forward is to research what vodka or alcohol do once inside the body, and then decide from there if it is something you choose to have.
Good Luck!

SweetGoddess is right and it is a toxin whether raw or not; that's why
your liver in particular works so hard to process it out.
No judging here (I still drink on occasion), but it is hard on the organs.
So depending on your currant health problems, if any, your body will be busy
processing out the alcohal instead of using that energy to heal ...
hope that makes sense....JMHO
At the Oregon Raw Foods Festival 2 years ago, I
attended a presentation food demo by Juliano.
During the presentation he said he enjoyed drinking
on rare occasions.
He said if someone is going to drink, don't drink beer
or wine. The best alcohol is Skyy Vodka because
it is made with distilled water and doesn't have as
many toxins as other liquor drinks.

I would really like to know the name of this unfiltered sake that is not heat treated because I make asian dressings and marinades that call for sake and I am leaving the sake out now. I have not been able to locate a raw sake.
i have heard that Peter Ragnar says that he will drink a shot of pure high quality vodka after drinking wildgreens juice to better absorb the nutrients into his system. dunno if it works or not, but that's what i heard...
i personally use tinctures that use alcohol...but i don't consider them raw.
...having said that... certain raw authors and 'authorities' drink, and smoke all sorts of things that healthy people might want to avoid... you'd be suprised.

Methinks "high quality vodka" is an oxymoron

Nama Sake is cold-filtered and unpasteurized--and yes, it's the same "Nama" that makes Nama Shoyu a "living food". Like Nama Shoyu, Nama Sake uses a cooked-food base, but it is naturally cultured with rice koji.
You can find info lots of places, but here's one: http://www.ghatravel.com/html/provisions.html

An air of caution. Alcohol is a drug and a toxin. If you get reactions to FOOD, just think of how you might react to a DRUG? It depends upon your body. I know me, that if I drank now raw or not, any more than a couple of sips and I would be sick. I'd rather get sick off of oatmeal personally!

VV, I missed this the first time around. Arsnic is used in modern medicine to 'cure' cancer. Or maybe it's if you live through the arsnic you can live thruogh the cancer too, huh? Really. Honestly. It's true.

thanks for passing on the info; I've been wanting to find some unpasteurized sake....I tried some at a restaurant a month ago and it tasted really different than regular sake, but not bad...thicker and milder....interesting...
I think it would blend well in martini's and cocktails like the raw restaurant
in NYCity does...PURE food and wine....

I found it interesting in the interview that he will use Vodka in recipes at his "raw restaurant" but will not use bananas, dates, carrots or cashews in his recipes because they're "disacorides" (not a word so I am sure he means disaccarides.. or two sugars i.e complex carbohydrate.)....so he opts for a non raw food but then will not use the above raw food...it seems odd to me to say "I won't eat a carrot (raw sugar ) but vodka (not raw alcohol) is OK ?
So I guess what it comes down to is we each have our own instrument of thought and to each his own.

I agree.
I actually started a tread on this topic after I joined but now when I see a beer ad on the telly I go "yuck".
I was at a wedding about 6 weeks ago and had one vodka but did not want to finish it. I think that the cleaner your body gets the more it learns to reject anything that is bad for it so anyone that has just started and thinks that they will miss the alcohol I can tell you that after a while you will wonder why you ever indulged.

OK news flash...I watched the Juliano Interview tonight on bestdayever.com. He is quite histerical to listen too, a character of sorts. The only two things he will tolerate that he admits are not as "acceptable " by the raw community is the Vodka (he like to drink..) and Bleach to clean things..of third his drug of choice but he points out is raw.....like a said a colorful "dude".
and the vodka he mentions is Cîroc® & it is Distilled from fine French grapes.
I went to there site and found this :
Cîroc® is vodka of the highest order. At the heart of this unique vodka are carefully selected grapes grown high in the Gaillac region of France. Cîroc is distilled five times to produce exquisitely smooth vodka.
Cîroc is made using fine French grapes. Most other vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes.
The grapes in Cîroc are hand-selected, from bunches left on the vine for an extended period of ripening.
The juice pressed from Cîroc grapes is cold fermented. Never before has cold-fermentation been used in the making of a luxury vodka.
Cîroc is five-times distilled to create a uniquely crisp, clean, smooth taste experience.

If it's cold pressed does that mean it is technically raw???
It sounds like it could be as long as it is not boiled.

So there is a group of mushrooms called "magic mushrooms" and they are what are known as psilocybin. I think there are about 180 species of mushrooms which contain the psychedelics / psilocybin. Here is a good description I pasted. BTW you will never find and accidently eat one of these at the Whole Food Market as they are illegal to possess, at least here in NYS.
Psilocybin (Mushrooms)
What is psilocybin?
Psilocybin is produced synthetically or extracted from the psilocybe mexicana mushroom and other mushroom species. It is chemically related to LSD. The drug is most often sold in the mushrooms themselves and are known by names like "psychedelic mushrooms," "magic mushrooms," and "'shrooms."
How is psilocybin used?
Usually taken orally, psilocybin is found in dried or fresh mushrooms or as a powder in capsules. It is sometimes brewed into a tea. Typical doses range from 4 to 10 milligrams, but are hard to control because the active amount of hallucinogens in mushrooms differ widely according to the genus, strength, and condition (fresh or dried) of the mushrooms.
Why do people take psilocybin?
Mushrooms have been taken in religious rituals in indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central America for thousands of years. Recreational users today take them as a hallucinogen that is considered gentler and more natural (less chemical) than LSD. Users report feelings of mild euphoria and tingling physical sensations. They also report increased sensitivity to music and visual sensations.
Small doses (4 to 8 mg.) produce effects within half an hour which continue for 4 to 5 hours and may include mental and physical relaxation, tiredness, a sense of separateness from surroundings, feelings of physical heaviness or lightness, mood swings and perceptual distortions.
Are there short-term dangers of taking psilocybin?
Misidentification is one of the biggest dangers to taking psilocybin mushrooms. It is difficult to know if the mushrooms are psilocybin mushrooms because poisonous mushrooms also cause hallucinogenic effects. Signs that the mushrooms are toxic include stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea. Poisonous mushrooms can even lead to death.
It is also difficult to determine what genus of mushroom you have and the dose of active hallucinogen each mushroom contains. To reduce the risk of a dangerous experience, it is safer to take a small amount and wait for its effects to be felt. In some cases, hallucinating can be unpleasant or even terrifying and the memory of this intense fear can remain with the person for life. A bad trip can occur at any dose. Signs of a bad trip include anxiety, confused or disordered thinking and panic.
At doses of 13 mg or more, users' perceptions become altered, and they develop the same symptoms as an LSD user. They also might experience facial flushing, sweating, a slowed sense of time, and the sense that they are separate from their bodies. At these higher doses some of the warning signs of a potential overdose include:
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Numbness of the tongue, lips, or mouth
Shivering or sweating
Nausea
Anxiety
Remember never to drive on psilocybin or any other hallucinogen. Operating machinery while under the influence of reality-altering substances is extremely dangerous.
Are there long-term consequences to taking psilocybin?
Some users experience such extremely unpleasant hallucinations that the fear of that experience remains with them for life. Users with a history of mental illness should not take hallucinogens, including psilocybin, because they can trigger or aggravate conditions like schizophrenia, mania, or depression.
Is psilocybin addictive?
Psilocybin does not produce compulsive drug-seeking behavior and addiction to hallucinogens is rare, although poly-drug addicts (people who are addicted to several drugs) frequently abuse hallucinogens as well. Tolerance to psilocybin mushrooms builds up rapidly and deters regular use.
Is psilocybin illegal?
Yes, psilocybin is illegal and its possession, use, and sale carry heavy prison sentences and fines and disciplinary consequences at Brown. See the Brown University Policy on Drugs in the Student Handbook.
