~Hope this isn't an inappropriate thread~if so I apologize in advance~
I was thinking this morning while making my husbands coffee (thinking back a few years here) that I cannot believe I used to use Splenda and powdered creamer everyday in my coffee..... YIKES! For years I started my day off on chemical overload... now never - never - never thanks to raw!
So I was thinking about how far I have come and wanted to see if others look back and say WOW, I cannot believe I used to eat that... I think meat and dairy are a given for most of us... to me it's inspirational to see that I now have the knowledge that so many others ignore!

Yikes! I know what you mean. We just visited some friends who have splenda in everything and think margarine is healthy! I never ate the latter but I used to have Splenda too and get headaches from it! Terrible, all that fake crap is just non-food.
Hmm, other mortal food sins? I used to eat packaged donuts like entemann's. I also think that generally eating out at lunch places (at least in big cities) like Cosi or Au Bon Pain is dangerous, the oil they use in their dressings, the fake dairy products and chemicals and all these things people don't even know they are consuming in a "chicken salad" or whatever. I think the whole of the U.S. needs a big back to basics wake up call!
What I was discussing the other day with a friend is, how come it seems ok to eat SAD for so many people? They are fine, not everyone has ailments or issues or disease or whatever. We decided that it's because you feel bad for so long that your body is numb to the cues and that there must be degrees of toxicity, in which you forget what it was like to feel good!

I used to drink like 6 diet cokes A DAY!!!!!!!!!!! If I didn't have caffeine I couldn't go to the bathroom!!!!!!!!
Or how about the fake spray butter that has no calories!
This was a typical meal for me on any given day:
Grilled chesse with dessert...the grilled cheese consisted of low-cal processed bread (but it was low-cal so it didn't matter the ingredients right! LOL) the cheese was low-fat cheddar & I'd spray the pan & the bread with the spray fake butter or whatever that stuff was! Then for dessert I'd eat sugar free jell-o w/ fat free whip cream loaded with splenda! Oh, & my drink was obviously a diet coke (diet vanilla coke)
GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I tell ya what, eating that way sure makes me greatful to be where I'm at & TRULEY eat healthy! It was all about calories then now it's not!

Oh I was the same way, Diet this and diet that... and we were TOLD we were eating healthy buy buying all that crap... I makes me sick to think of all the years I spent poisoning my family thinking I was doing so good, low fat (processed foods), diet everything, fake sugar, bumble and brown (it's make with yogurt!! LOL)
The time and money I spent on jenny craig, WW, LC meals.. oh and slim fast.. wow, all processed foods.... again thinking I was doing the healthy thing... and then there was the time I did the low carb thing.... all meats and dairy...
Stupid stupid stupid... :)

This morning I went into the breakroom after a co-worker had made his breakfast of eggs and packaged sausage and all I could smell was the chemical maple syrup junk. Crazy what some (including me at points in my life :o) call food!

I think this breaks the rules of not discussing cooked foods but we are holding up a reminder of ALL WE USED TO BE>....so I am thrilled with this.
It is important to remember where you came from always.
I cant believe I used to drink:
lots of diet Pepsi (ugh)
candy (lots) those orange circus peanuts were my fave. Orange!!!
even all the sticky icky vegetarian "natural" fare
I would say those were my worst atrocities..NO, the worst was eating animal
flesh and supporting their death in that way. That my friends is very sad very SAD!

Ha, diet Pepsi here too. Must be pretty addictive. My mom started me on Tab and Fresca as a kid. It was the only pop she would buy. I have been a whole foods eater for a long time, but probably I am most appalled by the fact that I used to buy my kids those neon colored Gummy Savers (gummy life savers) to eat in the car on the way home from the store.

But if I think about it, I still want some.... *giggles*
...however, after watching THE COVE, I can NOT in good conscience go back to eating Fish... ever again.

Yes Katch. The sodas are made to addict. I laughed my head off (inside) when my former boss brought me a bottle of "natural" pepsi !!! OH MY.
The ingreds were hillarious
ANyway yes, I am so glad that for the most of my life i have been an extremely healthy eater and whole foods advocate. phew...imagine all the detox and cleansing (besides all I have) I would be having to do. Even so, it is alot for all we are inadvertantly exsposed to.
I love how our dollar counts and what we put on our fork really matters.
Frozen meals for lunch, every day. Weight Watchers promoted a specific brand name (initials "LC") and gave them points. As I was following the WW plan, I assumed they were healthy, plus they were relatively inexpensive especially on sale. They even state on the box of certain meals that they have "one to two" servings of daily vegetables or fruit, etc. It was usually a wilted piece of broccolli or a dessert serving of apples.
Every day for about three years I would eat one of these meals for lunch and sometimes another one for dinner. I would always be hungry an hour or two after and would succumb to some type of energy bar or worse as a snack.
Even if I went off raw, which I don't find myself even considering, I would not go back to eating those frozen meals. I think I'm so tired of their taste that I wouldn't even be able to take a bite of one these days.

I can't believe I use to eat:
pork chops, kool aid and spray cheese stopped that like 15+ years ago
chicken livers and gizzards like 20+ years ago

I can't believe I used to microwave things in plastic tupperware. Just pop open the top, a little broccoli inside, it's going to be healthy and steamed, right? OMG! I had no idea how "dead" my food was, how many toxins were being released into it from heated plastic.
The chewing gum with 20 different kinds of sweeteners in it.
The ENERGY DRINKS! 0 carb Rockstar, with enough caffeine to guarantee me a panic attack and migraine later that afternoon.
Sigh. Every time I get cravings I try to remind myself that clearly there's a side of me that doesn't know what I want, or doesn't understand what's best for my body.
Great thread btw.

Oh boy does so much of this sound familiar... especially the frozen dinners. YUCCCCKKKKKK!!
In college (when I was "skinny" and therefore thought I was healthy), I would often eat:
- half a tube of chocolate chip cookie dough
- Slimfast (ugh, pure chemicals)
- Powerbars (more chemicals)
- entire boxes of Snackwell's cookies (hey, they were fat-free -- healthy, right?!?!!!)
In my 20's, I "graduated" to Lean Cuisine, Nutrisystem, Coke Zero, and coffee with Splenda. *shudder* Sickening, sickening, sickening!!!!! (literally!)

I can't believe I used to eat dairy with gusto, I HATE that stuff now. can't stand ANY kind of dairy products! even "vegan" ones now taste weird to me. (except ice cream and yogurt ) just looking at melted cheese makes me want to throw up
I can't believe I also used to "eat" cough and cold pills all the time. I would down maybe 6 or 8 of them after 3rd period in high school... thinking about it now, I would probably get sick from those if i tried them now! hahaha

I can't believe I used to eat the strange highly artifically colored stuff called "Jello", otherwise known as pure GELATIN. But mostly meat. I can't believe I used to eat animal flesh. Oh and especially after watching Food, Inc., I can't believe I used to eat fast food. *throws up in mouth a little*

Ive only been eating healthy for two weeks, however, when I look back at the junk I ate, it grosses me out. I bet there were times I'd go weeks without having one serving of veggies or fruits, insane!
Ive lost approx 12 lbs already. Im so into this raw living.
Junk I use to eat:
Taco Bell
Mc Donalds
diet sodas
Fried Chicken
Milk
Cheese

OMG, I once survived (barely) on Del Taco $1 bean burritos for nearly 6 months...
I was so poor I thought I couldn't afford decent food - and little did I know, I would have used that $2/day to buy a bushel of greens + bananas and make Green Smoothies and be vastly more nourished!!!!
I was 19 yrs old, so I forgive myself. :D
I can't believe I ever ate meat. I'm still upset that it took me 19 years on this plant to wake up to what I was doing.
But aside from that, I can't believe I fell prey to the soy & protein craze. I used to eat Clif Bars thinking they were healthy, tofu and fake meat products every night, soy milk, soy protein powder, soy ice cream... no wonder I was gaining weight and feeling horrible. I'm so, so happy that I found raw foods!

My favorite dinner back in college was Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. I could live on that and the box was only .35! Yum!

I'm going to go against the grain and say this;
I can't believe I can now tolerate and absolutely love garlic....after many years of not digesting it well - of not being able to enjoy it due to the hangover feeling and stuffy sinuses it always gave me. It's odor no longer seems to ooze out the pores of my nose and face, or make my skin feel like it is fighting for air.
Now I can eat a few cloves a day. I finely chop a half a head every so often and place it in a jar of vinegar to munch on as desired. Although, this still comes with the risk of becoming estranged from my wife and her kitty due to garlic breath. I now happily digest it, receiving it's energy boosting vitality, and I trust it is doing equally well at clearing out arteries and purifying my blood.
