Ok, so now I'm freaking out. After 22 years of being cavity-free I went to the dentist for the first time in a year (I haven't had insurance in a year either) and he found FIVE cavities. I brush and floss my teeth very well, but apparently not well enough.
So, he drilled them out and filled them up -- with composite resin. On the spot. I didn't have time to research it and was just like "get them out!" Apparently one was so bad that if I had waited a couple months I would have needed a root canal.
Now I'm doing some research, durr, and apparently composite resin is made of plastic (http://your-doctor.com/patient_info/dental_info/dental_disorders/composite.html).
And I feel very stupid. I tried my best to take care of my teeth and failed. :( But I also now have plastic drilled inside my teeth and that sucks even more.
What do you guys think? Is this going to be something to worry about? Maybe other people wouldn't think this is such a big deal, but I have tried my best to be plastic-free and now it's INSIDE me. The good news is that apparently they don't last forever -- just 5-10 years. So maybe later on I'll get them filled with something more natural, if it's available.
Oh well. At least it's not mercury.
