I have always read that your metabolism slows does as you age, would that ring true if you eat 100% raw? I personally don't think it does but I would like to get other people's point of views on this.

The metabolism slows as the people slow down and continue with their poor eating habits - and/or, the poor eating habits contribute to the slowdown. IF one is eating well and 5-6 times a day, my experience is, metabolism does just fine.

People have come to accept the fact that you put on wieght as you get older and that acceptance is the problem. If you think it is normal then you do nothing about it. If it is true that your metabolism slows down then your appitite should slow down with it and you will not have a problem otherwise eat raw and stop worrying about it.

Thanks Revvel and Sport for your feedback. What you both said sounds logical, its just that when people know I am trying to loose weight (my fault for telling them in the first place) they straight away say that its too hard for someone my age (42) to get down to the weight I used to be many many moons ago and it becomes disheartening when hearing that. So, iam going to stop worrying about it and just eat raw like Sport said and eat several raw meals a day as recommended by Revvel.

thank you both and have a great day !

 We have to concentrate on what we eat and exercise, Because we tend not to exercise, watch what we eat daily, and blame it on getting old . Wheather it is raw or what ever we need a plan and a consitant one. ;)

I have no doubt that at 53 I am older than you. I am ashamed to say that I do not exercise and I eat as much as I like when I like. I weigh 111 Lbs and feel as energetic as I did when I was 12.

I am not going to tell my age but I will say that while what people say may be important nothing is more important than what one says about ones self. --Or-- Even if its true for everyone else it does not have to be true for me unless I say so. And IMO that statement doesn't have to be true for anyone who eats a raw food diet. I won't tell my age but I will say I am old enough to be in this discussion.

You can do it regardless of your age, I believe.

I happen to be 42 as well and since going raw, I've slimmed
down to my same jean size as I had in High School. I'm a bit
heavier though because I've put on some muscle. I lift 3 days a
week and try to run on the days I don't lift.

However, I also believe you have to choose wisely on a RAW diet
just as you would if you weren't raw; for example, be careful
to avoid overloading on nuts and seeds as well as fruit juices, etc...

We are what we do. If you eat right, exercise, breath fresh air,
get adequate sunshine, relax, etc, you should find yourself in good
physical shape regardless of age.

Only share your goals with people who are going to support them!
Here in Kentucky, I sometimes slip and tell the wrong people I eat only
RAW foods and its like playing a tape recorder:
- Wow, I could never do that. I'd rather die than give up my ____
- I'm too old to change now.
- Don't you miss pizza (substitute whatever)
- My family doesn't eat raw so I could never do it.
- And of course.... Where do you get your protein?
- and the list goes on...

So, be careful who you share your dreams with... unless you want to
get bombarded with all the reasons you can't accomplish them.
Instead, share your dreams with those that already have done what you're seeking who'll support you along the way.

hth, Gil

Well, I don't mind saying I'm hitting the half century mark this year and I feel better than I did in my twenties. Of course, I didn't take such good care of myself then either. I think many mature people gain weight not because they are older but because they become less active which along with eating the SAD is a recipe for disaster. I am glad and grateful that the raw food diet came along for me while I'm still reasonably healthy and still able to enjoy the benefits.

As for what others my age think of the diet, all I can say is if they knew how little I cared, it would scare them. :p

"As for what others my age think of the diet, all I can say is if they knew how little I cared, it would scare them."
I like that one.

I do not take that attitude and still avail of every opportunity to impart my little bit of info to anyone and everyone within earshot in the hope that it will impart some glimmer of interest in even one person present and send them down the right track. I am so so glad that I found this way of eating and I want everyone else to have the same chance. If someone expresses horror or disaproval it will not bother me. I was always wayward and loved to be contreversial so why stop now.

Very noble, Sport. Very noble.

the older we are the more we have to detox. the more we detox, the more we rebalance our endocrine system, colon and liver, and our metabolism get's way more efficient, and we reverse our physiologic age. it just takes time, commitment and patience, but it can be done!

see Nora Lenz's story- her website is rawschool.com, but her testamonial is also on Shazzie's site, shazzie.com. She says how in her early 40's she didn't lose an ounce the first 6 months she was 100% raw, and was really disappointed, but after detoxing, she started to lose a lot. That's encouraging!

I'm going to be 41 in a couple of months and want to lose 30 pounds. That's where I feel the healthiest. I am realistic that it could take awhile, but I'm also realistic about that the more I detox (juice fasting every month for a few days, not eating at night, not too many fats, lots of greens and daily exercise-REAL exercise) it will come off faster. No big deal!

First of all, I really don't concentrate of what I eat, I just eat it. Actually, I'm reading posts while I eat so, that's where my concentration is. As far as a plan goes, I consistently eat, what I want, when I want as long as it's raw.

the older we are the more we have to detox.

Actually, I was considering this today and don't feel it to be true. I read here about a LOT of people going through a LOT of detox. I am 56 years old. Haven't taken drugs or eaten meat in over 18 years. My feeling is, what one has to detox depends on what one has been ingesting, where they live, etc. Not having taken drugs I have way less to detox than others who have taken stuff at every sniffle and flu shots every "flu" season. (funny, when I was growing up, there were only 4 seasons.) :p

I think we are all ingrained to look at a false metabolism.

Victoria Boutenko in her books, talks about her super lively and energetic 100% raw son Sergi, who eats 2 organic oranges a day, and snow boards all day long, and that is all he eats, while other teens are eating tons of sandwiches and snacks, and sugar and pops and drinks and chips etc.

So, I don't necessarily think that our metabolism should be as high as we think it should be in our teens, I think it just takes care of itself.

When eating raw, we actually are able to assimilate the nutrients from the foods, that is all, so I feel that my food consumption has gone way way down.

When I was eating SAD, I could put away 1/2 a pizza, with 2 or 3 glasses of pop and that was just for dinner, plus I would eat lunch and maybe breakfast too, and then an snack later maybe a huge bowl of ice cream. YIKES!!!

Now, I eat an orange and maybe a banana for breakfast, a small salald for lunch, and I mean small, and maybe an almond milkshake and some nuts for dinner, or maybe one small nut burger patty with some greens and tomatoe slice, but that's it for all day, and it is consistant, why in September all I had was 1/2 to 1 melon per day, and that was all I ate for an entire month, I wasn't fasting or mono eating, it is just all I wanted to eat.

So, I think you can just eat what your body tells you to eat, after a few weeks or months on raw, you will be able to "hear" your body, and you can then easily listen to it.

rawpriestess-that is really inspiring. That makes a lot of sense. What freedom, to be so free from the attachment to eating.

That is just part of that quote from above...wow, that is very sage...Thank you for sharing that :)
