Have seen a few recipes using maca, I got some and have put it into savory drinks....but just a little because it gets bitter.....

Lucuma, is more sweet

what and why maca? I googled it and it seems to be considered a superfood - especially for men and sperm count, lol! so why would I take it?

Is it for taste, or nutrition, or as herbal medicine....

Whyfore Maca?

from what I remember from David Wolfe, it's
a complete protein, an aphrodisiac, let's you live in a low oxygen or colder environment, and an endurance food. Good stuff!

It just makes my smoothies taste weird if I use more than 1t per 32oz.. I'm sure some people can build up to more quantity.

I've also heard it's good at balancing hormones and good for PMS. I add 1 tablespoon to my green smoothie every day and I have found it is helping me with balancing. *Ü*

I put it in my smoothie every morning to help with my sex drive. I might add a 2nd dose somewhere in the day, maybe in like a salad dressing or something

its an adaptogen (like eleuthero, licorice, tulsi basil, etc.) ; its supposed to help the body deal with stress. its a round root thats a regular food for people in the Andes. that said, i have never noticed a difference in my overall well-being when i have used it :( but i know others who swear by it.

mountain rose herbs actually sells the seeds for planting but i had no luck with mine last year :( the garden patch i was using was boggy and weedy and not much else grew either, so *shrugs*.. it would be interesting to see what its like used fresh though

I have some, but frankly don't use it too much - only occasionally, as I like to use foods more "close to home." So I don't use it enough to notice any difference.

However, a friend used a good heaping tablespoon in a smoothie and threw up. She blamed it on the maca.

Anyone experience this after consuming too much?

I was feeling horrible from sleep deprivation & depression from my H passing away for over 2 yrs. I started taking this in the summer & I noticed a difference within a week. I began sleeping through the pm & finally felt 'awake'. For me, it's been wonderful. No sex going on here so I can't say how it does there but, when I first began taking, I had a huge increase in libido. I think if I were 'active', it would've been HUGE. May need to be tried for a few weeks on a regular basis. I do not take the rec amt, only 1/2.

LOL, T-Bird, it's an adaptogen....meaning it will increase it where you need it and decrease it where you need it.....Er, supposedly.

I thought I was OK on this at 2 tsp. per day(worked up to it from 1/2 tsp.)just in a glass of warmish water, as putting even that little bit in a smoothie overpowered it. At the two-week mark I got a bad case of diarrhea - maybe it was just a bad batch that I had bought just before this happened? This was more than two years ago and I've been scared off of it ever since. Maybe my system just doesn't handle stuff like this very well.

I was having horrible menopausel night sweats and insomnia. Started using Maca. They went away and I've been sleeping like a baby ever since.\

I will strengthen the habit as well.
I take it in a glass of water together with a crushed flax seeds but will make sure that I take it every day instead of occasionally.
I also find that it overpowers smoothies.

Like a previous post I prefer lucuma but I am not sure that the benefits are the same.
