Oat groats and steel cut oats are raw. Steel cut oats are basically oat groats cut into little pieces so I do not believe the steel cut oats will sprout but they are raw. Rolled are are steamed and flattened so these are not raw.
For oat groats, soak over night. Drain and leave in a fine mesh colander or put in a sprouting jar. Rinse them a few times a day and keep out of sun light. You will eventually begin to see a white little point coming out of the ends of the groats which will eventually grow into little tails. I usually like to use my oats when I first see that little point coming out. They tend to taste a little grassy for me if I let the sprouts grow really long. If you just want to make oat flour then just grind them in a coffee grinder or dry use vitamix container.
Hope this helps!

So if I wanted cereal in the morning I could use steel cut oats w/ almond milk & that is raw?

We buy oat groats in bulk and flake our own oats. They are sooo good! We use the family grain mill with the flaker attachment.

yep and actually what I do is soak them overnight and then in the morning, drain them. Add them to food processor and then add the following: maple syrup, cinnamon, pinch sea salt and process until an oatmeal consistancy. Put in a bowl and add raisins or dried cranberries and walnuts or pecans. It is so yummy!

Rolled are are steamed and flattened so these are not raw. Actually it's hard to find raw oats that you can buy in the store. Groats and steel cut are not automatically raw. Rolled you can buy raw and they work the best. Alissa use to sell them. They can be found at several the raw on-line stores.

Maple syrup is a cooked sugar boiled at very high temperatures for several hours. It starts as maple water and must be boiled for hours to evaporate most of the water to concentrate it by 40 times to make maple syrup.

I know that maple syrup is cooked. Some people on here use it.

Ooooooh, thank you for this info! I've had rolled/flattened oats a few times in the last few months -- used to eat them daily. Now that I am informed that they're likely steamed, I'll switch over to soaking Groats.
Christina's recipe sounds better than my oatmeal, anyway!!!

The reason the rolled oats are steamed is so that they don't go rancid, therefore unless you know they've been recently rolled, you should just roll/flake them yourself, IMO. I do the same as the other poster, I buy whole oats and roll them in a hand-grinding rolling/flaking machine. Mine is called a Marga and I got it at Lehman's for about $85. My kids like to roll them. This small tabletop non-electric machine also makes flour, but it's not a very fine flour. The Vita-Mix actually does a better job of making flour.
My diet is about 95% raw, but my kids is not as high. I must say that I personally believe that most grains, if eaten at all, should be done in moderation, and I feel they're more digestible/best when cooked. Therefore I cook mine.
My oats are locally grown but will not sprout, and I can't figure this out as they say they're not heated. Perhaps when they take off the husk, they're heated a tiny bit- enough to destroy enzymes?
I've heard that you cannot sprout whole oats unless they're specifically sprouting oats. Anyone know the diff?
I'm going to research it at my end. Will let you all know what I find too.

few years ago here some bright people totally into raw like rawtruth did all the foot work / reporting on oats , bottom line was that raw oats are hard to buy . one theyre steamed to prevent going racid , two theyre heated to remove husks . but a very few farms grate / shake the husk off and if you can find a farm can special order
but a few places grow hullless oats that dont need husks removed ,
and one of the places that sells them is SUN ORGANIC FARMS in california .
ive bought oats / barley from them and theyre good products , heres a link to their grain / oats page :

How nice to know that I can save some footwork! Thank you very much!
I wonder if the hull-less versions are some sort of hybrid? Have you sprouted them, or grown grass from them to juice?
I got some oats to grow grass, and I have to go out to the garage and check if they have hulls on them or not. I got them from wheatgrasskits.com, I believe.
Thanks again,

If you look on sproutpeople you will see that the only oats that are truly raw are hulless oats. I have purchased them and they do sprout. If your oats don't sprout they aren't raw

I buy my oat groats (they sprout), from a store in the mountains where my mom lives. Very cheap! With the 2 hour drive, still cheaper than shipping. :)

Kathy8429,
LOL, Sorry to disagree, but oats with hulls intact are also raw! I buy them for my chickens, and am going to try to grow some oatgrass from them. They wouldn't work to try to eat them with the hulls though!
Thanks! Sorry to be a picky snoot!
