View Full Version : Abstaining from "SALT" and Sodium

Previously I was obese, but even during childhood I had suffered from "CUSHINGS" features, I.e. facial/stomach bloating, "slouching" posture, "hunchback" and such.
Down my father's line there is much history of high-blood pressure. His mother actually ate foods with no salt whatsoever. There is a history of high blood pressure and hypertension down my father's line. My father himself is on medication for high blood pressure and hypertension......SALT greatly aggrevates the symptoms (RESTLESSNESS, panic, extreme fear/anxiety)......and I suffered all of this since childhood. These very symptoms, I experienced.
Now that I eat completely salt-free foods, these features have completely disappeared, and now I am more energetic and stronger than ever (I have more energy to bodybuild/do sports).
However; during Thanksgiving dinner, I had a lot to eat at a resteraunt (completely SALT laden foods, as well as much OIL)....
This was Thursday, it is now Sunday
Questions:
1- How long does it take for SALT to leave the body?
2- List all FRUITS containing "ZERO SODIUM" content. I am aware that ORANGES (VALENCIA) contain 0 sodium, but NAVEL oranges contain 1 mg of sodium. Please list all the fruits you know of, that contain ZERO sodium whatsoever
3- has anyone else done this? (ABSTAIN from salt/sodium) if so, please share your story, or if there are other threads, please link me to it.
I apologize if I ask too many questions, or talk too much, or think to much. In other forums (such as bodybuilding forum) people were quite CLOSE MINDED because I "THINK" so much, but thats just the way I am.
Thanks for the replies in advance!

Well, I cannot answer all of your questions..but will tell you that we all strive to adhere to a raw vegan diet on this forum. Alissa Cohen's book, Living on Live Foods, could help you understand the answers to many of your questions.
She advocates a balanced raw diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, greens and sprouted grains.

Well thick my diet consists of solely FRUITS (bananas/kiwis/oranges/berries), and GRAINS (whole wheat)...I abstain from meat, dairy, etc.
I am getting DEEPER however, because now I'm concerned with the SODIUM CONTENT of my fruits, but yes I would say my diet does consist of live foods.
You can say I'm a "BORING" eater. I never get tired of my homemade whole-wheat flatbread and fruits. This is what I live on....flatbread and fruits! Talk about "bland" eh? Not so "BLAND" when ya get used to it I tell you! :) you learn to LOVE it

Also, if you are concerned with salt leaving your body..water and the natural potassium in fruits, vegetables and greens will help you.
Sodium is a neccessary mineral though, so to limit yourself to the point of excluding certain fruits and veg could be harmful, I would think.

Ya we are certainly not about limiting things on this site. We do, as we are spend more and more time being raw vegans, start to see our diets change. But as Alissa shares in her book... eating raw live foods is what brings great health.
Welcome!

Hello there,
Don't worry about the sodium content in natural raw foods. It is vastly different from table salt in the perfect proportion for our bodies.
Enjoy your fruit freely!! It is our natural food.
Blessings,

Just like chilove said above. It's not the sodium in fruits that give you all the bad symptoms like high blood pressure, hypertension etc. it's the table salt which is a chemical and your body treats it rightly so because it's an inorganic substance. Fruits and veggies have the organic sodium you need and can assimilate. No sodium is like a Standard American Diet thing because the sodium they're talking about is harmful to your health. They don't tell you that fruits and veggies are the correct and natural form to get those nutrients. Your body will tell you if it likes it or not.

You need some sodium as it is a crucial electrolyte along with magnesium, calcium and potassium. Really the potassium to sodium ratio in fruit greater than 4:1 is what is really helpful. Fortunately, most fruits if not all are well above that benchmark.
You need to keep the K Factor (search on it in google) which is the ratio of potassium to sodium at greater than 4 to 1. Sodium isn't the bad boy. You don't need to go to zero. Just keep a balance in electrolytes in the food you consume.
