I see Dr Oz asking his patients for 10,000 steps a day when they begin a program. He then ups them to 12,000 steps.

Its a cool idea. Does anyone use these on a regular basis ? Is it motivating or just something you do then get tired of ?

I went to the training tag and got 3 or 4 entries dealing with 'steps'..enough to convince me that a pedometer can be motivational.

There's a huge amount of good reads on your blog. Congratulations ! I'll be reading more as time permits. Thank you.

Do pedometers pick up each step on a mini trampoline ? Its an up and down mouvement. That would be a way for me to top off the 10000 steps with some exercise on a mini trampoline. btw those mini trampolines or rebounders as some call them are great. Helps get the lymph moving.

Each ped is different. Haven't tried mine on a trampoline yet, some of the cheaper models will count "steps" just because you're pulling your pants down ~ or up.

Does anyone know on what basis they detect. How are they picking up the facts. Is there some sort of signal involved.
I have a few in the house but have been slow to use them.

I looked into it a bit. Apparently, the ones that are "pocket models" work with any kind of up and down mouvements. So I can use a pocket model for walking, running or mini-trampoline. I don't own one yet so I can't confirm this.

Others would only be good for walking and possibly running because the mechanism is not the same. They are accurate only to a certain extent. In other words if you wear 3 of them, you are likely to get three different readings. Nevertheless, many use them to get a fairly good idea of how many steps they take in a day. Some come with software so you can make graphs on your PC to track your progress. Kinda gadgety.

They don't all work alike. I like one that will go in my pocket and can be used for trampoline and walking.

I do 30,000 steps. If I only reach 10,000 I feel unaccomplished, same story at 20,000. Of course that could be from the... obsessive fixation on that number I got when I was like, in ED territory 2 years ago...

I mean, it is a good motivation to exercise, to have a target number of steps. And I like to walk with podcasts because I can go for ages and reach 30,000 easily in a day. Usually broken up into 3 segments. I haven't done this regularly though since the days where I was on a dangerously low-calorie diet and basically a bit mentally... messed up, about my weight.

Go for it Amii ! Anything over 10,000 is going to give you huge returns health-wise. 30k must be awesome...I wouldn't obsess on it tho. Better not to obsess on anything. Be happy. Have an inner smile as you walk: it will help you to melt away your stresses.

enjoy your steps,

It takes me about 2 hours to walk 10,000 steps according to MY ped and who knows if I've got it right? One thing about peds as was stated, wear 3 and they'll all be different. I just use mine as sort of a guide.

IF I were going to use up another 3 1/2 - 4 hours more to do movement, I'd change up and do some ground engagement, some kb and club swinging, anything for strength, flexibility, etc. I'll be writing about this on my blog in a bit.

One of the reasons I always add an extra 500 or so steps onto my 30,000 at the end of each day is to compensate for the fact that pedometers will miss a step here or there or add on an extra step. If you think it's not working properly, count along the first 100 steps you do and check what the pedometer reads?

It takes me about 1 hour 20 to reach 10,000 steps but I used to get it done in an hour. I'd speed walk lol!

This wasn't about you and I'm not that particular if I get 10,000+ steps or not because, as I say, I'd prefer to change up my movement because just walking doesn't give me the agility, mobility, balance and weight-bearing movement I need to get an overall workout. I just walk for the time I have early in the a.m., then do various other movements throughout the day to make sure everything else is covered. :)

It would be good to know what works best after the 10,000 steps have been done. My 10,000 steps sometimes includes some trampoline work. Its all good.
