View Full Version : Family Sabotage?

I have two mothers. One is the very supportive of raw (despite having some health behaviors and being overweight most of the time, she knows raw is the best path is even if she doesn't follow it), and the other well, I'm not so sure.
Take a look at the article I got from Mom2 (not biological) who has always argued with me about my natural set point being higher than I was trying to be and how I was 'big boned'. I am medium boned, 5'9 tall and usually naturally settle into a size 10-12 but prefer how i look and feel at a 6 or 8 where I think my raw journey will take me with exercise (3 months raw now).
Here's the article from NYT, helpful info or sabotage???

First, I think the article is contradictory in many places and poorly written and also just seems like an excuse written by a lazy, obese, 'victim of genes' looking for excuses to throw their hands in the air at defeat to poor eating and living habits.

I'm sorry you're not getting the support you need from "Mom2"... I agree with you, that article contradicts itself and is just WEIRD. So eating well and being active aren't enough, your DNA is going to override everything and make you fat? Really?? Then it talks about how humans have never had a good natural diet... because of the hamburger consumption in 1966.
I'm sure your mom meant well... but I agree with you completely about the "usefulness" of that article. Continue doing what is working for YOU!

if they understand or it's against what they might do..they won't be supportive & always try to make you look like you are dumb.
My 'M' gave my dd meat behind my back. bc she felt I didn't know what I was doing & she did...she didn't like it. She didn't tell me for a long time. I was so mad.

Yeah, it's a piece of junk. Don't engage, just let it slide. If she asks about it, just say, "Yeah, some interesting info in there, thanks." Then just live your life and by your glowing health, they will be convinced eventually. the proof is in the (coconut) pudding.

I agree with RR and VFL. Didn't read it. Don't fill my body with junk, don't fill my head with it either. It's her issue, not yours.
As an aside.... just because we call someone something ~ in this case "mom", it doesn't mean they are perfect; doesn't mean they "mean us well", doesn't really mean anything at all ~ unless we give it meaning.

I did read it - made little if any sense.
Some of the facts were there but the authors interpretation of them were plain old nutty.
The author is likely overweight, lol! And doesn't want to take the responsibility for it.....

Heh heh, that's exactly what I was thinking as I read the article. ;)

People around us can feel very threatened when we change our eating habits. Something like eating and food is such a fundamental thing. I think it can feel as though we are rejecting our upbringing or those we love by changing this fundamental thing that's always a part of our social interactions with them. I didn't read the article. And I probably wouldn't read the article if someone sent it to me. I would confront their motivation though.

Skimmed over that article awhile back - it's a typical example of the junk health articles out there that just confuse people, and often just discourage them from making real changes. Best instead to back away from mainstream media and look for one's own answers and not be afraid to try stuff out on one's OWN body. Sure, we have some genetic stuff in there, but a lot of times many people have inherited the family's lousy eating habits and no exercise to speak of.
Yes, it is hard when you have people getting on your case about one's new healthy eating habits, but again, this is an example of our screwed-up culture. No one bats an eye about people eating canned, boxed and bottled foods and taking 6 different prescription drugs, etc. but they will be all over one for eating a natural unrefined diet and saying that one is some kind of radical freak for doing so - yikes! Soldier on, and don't let these naysayers get to you. Every moment, you have a choice to choose health and vitality, even if you have to bring some of your own food somewhere. As far as so-called "set-point" you know your body better than anyone else, so if you feel better at a lower weight, by all means go for it.

Stick to what you know is good for you. A lot of "health" articles are sometime bedfellows with the s.a.d. food industry and will put out stuff just to keep people confused about their health. The more confusion the bigger the profits. The article points to how in 1966, McDonalds had already sold over 2 billion burgers and people were still thin. But back then there weren't super-sized meals, people didn't eat McDonald's for breakfast/lunch/dinner, people mostly prepared their own meals, plus, alot of the technology that makes us very lazy today wasn't around then. So people did way more moving around than we do presently.
Our bodies were made to move around and digest natural foods. It's amazing to think that although our body is not made for processed foods, it will adapt to it...which in turn produce negative effects such as diseases, illnesses, and yep, excessive weight...whether one has DNA issues or not.

I can visualize the author of that article stopping typing the article long enough to eat more greasy pizza.

I read the article, and honestly I don't think your Mother was reading it correctly if she meant it to discourage you!
The author is attempting to make a point (albeit, not entirely clearly) that diet alone will not change your world - you must have a balance of multiple elements.
It's a valid point!
To the article's points, I add my own summary: Diet + Exercise + Spiritual Health + Environmental Health = Some of the many elements necessary for Total Wholeness/Health!
Hilary - No one can sabotage your diet, but you. Unless you are literally being chained to a fast food counter and having hamburgers shoved down your gullet, NO ONE is in control of your eating habits BUT YOU.
This is an amazingly empowering, releasing concept - but it also puts the responsibility for YOUR LIFE in YOUR HANDS... where it belongs! After all, who can tell you better how to care for yourself, than YOU?
No one! No one knows your body like you do.
Follow the RAW path... your Body is telling you to do this, so do it. Don't let Mother #2 stand in your way, because she can ONLY do that IF YOU LET HER.
Be Strengthened knowing that it's Your Choice to be RAW, and you live in a Country where Your Choice can be acted upon without any REAL restriction.
You are free to live RAW, live Powerfully and live Vibrantly! You are free to be Beautiful, and be-come More Beautiful. Embrace YOUR lifestyle - it's YOURS!
No one can take it away, but you.
