If I eat more than maybe a tablespoon, I get terribly ill. Is there any good raw foods substitute for it? It's hard to make any desserts without it, so I end up either not making them or using butter :(

Me too. Do not know why. I bought a few jars and gave one to a friend and have started to use one as body oil to get rid of it because when I add it to ice cream or a smoothie it makes me queesy. My body is telling me that it does not want it.
I want to know why. Does anyone have any idea.
P.S. My friend takes it in capsules and has no problem.

Do you have Alissa's book? I am working my way through all of her recipes - check out the Alissa and Annie thread. I have made more than 30 recipes so far in all categories (appetizers, entrees, salads, breads, desserts) and not one has called for coconut oil. It is certainly do-able to make great food without coconut oil.
And, please, don't use butter!

I was the same way, but tried some coconut butter, which I believe is the oil and grated up coconut together. Not so "oily" and doesn't make me queasy.
It's worth a try.

Could be the brand you're using. Raw, organic shouldn't get someone sick unless it somehow went bad, which is rare.
Remember Nutiva's is not raw.

I've tried all different brands and it makes no difference.
I did a Google search on it, and apparently a lot of people get sick from it. The theories seem to be that it's because it's detoxing you, which ends up giving you symptoms such as nausea. They also say that coconut oil kills candida, which can give you die-off symptoms like that.
It makes me soooo nauseous though, it's just not worth it, even if it is detoxifying me!

Oh, and anniez--what does she use in place of coconut oil?

Yes, that's true it can detoxify. Maybe you can build up tolerance by using it in tiny amounts 1/4 tsp, then 1/2, etc. People have the same issue at times with green powders like spirulina.
Sunflower lecithin is something that can be used as a thickener. You can also try other butters or oils.

Never has this myself. I love it and swear by it for amazing health!! Yes candida die off as well as detox perhaps. Candida die off gives people nausea. Yes lesser amounts I would say.

For me, it was simply the "oiliness" that made me gag. Just felt greasy in my mouth, down my throat. Yuck, yuck, yuck.
Now the coconut butter, I can eat even by itself.
Okay, okay...
Newbie here... what's the difference between coconut oil and coconut butter?

Could be the same thing or the coconut butter could be coconut meat blended with some of the water. Its very thick and not oily. But some recipes call for coconut butter but they mean oil. The coconut butter is a new thing - Artisana has one out and it is confusing people who used to use the terms interchangeably. If in doubt I would use coconut oil.

When I first went Raw. I had one of my grandsons over to the house and I had to take him an hour and a half up to camp. Well, I took a big old spoonful of coconut oil! My stomach (mid-way) started rumbling and oh my! By the time I dropped him off I was so sick! :p I know I was green. But I have since been able to eat recipes with it in there. Now coconut butter I have no problem with, that's the one that has the coconut and the butter together. I can eat that by the spoonful. It's just the oil is so rich...
DO NOT TAKE IT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! That was my mistake.

For me it is not the oiliness as I was adding it to strawberry ice cream and that was not noticeable and I did not mind the taste at all but it still made me queasy and not wanting to finish the bowl so it was a reaction of some sort.
Detox can not be that quick.

That's exactly how I am! Even when I can't taste, it makes me so sick. I remember the first time I ate it, I thought it was so delicious and ate too much, and I literally spent HOURS sitting next to the toilet, just waiting to puke :(

I eat probably 1/4 cup of coconut oil daily in my smoothies/shakes. The difference between coconut oil and coconut butter is exactly like the difference between almond oil and almond butter. Coconut oil is just the oil, coconut butter is the whole nut meat processed into a butter like almonds are processed into nut butter.
Here's an article about coconut oil detox:

I'm curious about something, those of you that get sick from coconut oil, had you been on a toxic SAD diet for a long time and/or on prescription/OTC drugs?

Thanks for the article...and as for your question, the answer is a big NO. I've always been really into nutrition, and I am strongly anti-drugs of any kind.
