Maybe cheesecloth might work?

Hi whoa-raw. Thank you. Yes, I read once that one can use cheesecloth but I am pretty sure she said she doubled it, otherwise it wasn't efficient. All I can do is try. I will be making almond milk in the morning and since I haven't made any nut milk bags yet, I will try this instead. I'll let you know how it works. I am open to more suggestions. Anyone?:)

Any cotton that is not too tightly woven will work. I just use a dishtowel.

Okay katch - great idea. Not expensive either and we wash them all the time, don't we!. Thanks.:D

Hi islegirl ~ I know this isn't what you're asking, but I thought I'd just toss it in. I bought paint strainer bags at Sherwin Williams for around $1+ each. I've been using them almost 2 years now and have been very happy with them - no ripping or splitting. They have a band of elastic around the top. *Ü*

I bought one nut bag for ten dollars when I went raw. Now i find them in the paint store for a lil over a dollar.
The material is important because of the washability. I even find with the paint bags that the residue gets in the seams and stuff. Key is washing them out right away and setting them to dry.
I love them because they have the elastic at the top to put right over a wide mouth picture so as to have squeezin room.

Hi Bette. So far I haven't been able to find any of the paint bags in my town but I will keep looking. I've read about them before. So thank you very much for the reminder. But guess what! This morning I made my first raw cocoa with almond milk, agave and cacao. Yum:) (I used cheesecloth to strain the milk and I had soaked the almonds overnight just as we're supposed to.) Then as I was straining it, I promptly squirted the stuff all over the counter and all over the sleeve of my dressing gown. But, no matter - I had lots of it left and this will help me to stop thinking about coffee. I have another mug in the dehydrator. I am wondering if anyone knows how long it will take to "warm up" enough to drink? I put it in at 105'.:D
xoxo

Nice Sue..sorry bout your spill.
To warm in dehy takes quite a while I found. To make a warm drink, I pour bioling water in a cup and then dump it out and put my raw drink in. Also I sometimes put things over a warm pot with hot water in it, like a double boiler. Warming without cooking.

Yes, Bette, it did take too long in the dehydrator, but it was worth it. It was so good. I will do the double boiler thing next time and use my candy thermometer until I get used to it. I am only just now eating a yummy mango, having gone all day on those two mugs of almond milk cocoa this morning. Pretty good eh?:) Oh, I totally forgot to tell you that I went to the $ store and bought a pkg of knee highs (2 pair). I read that someone uses these for straining the nut milk. I'm going to try it.

hi there...
Almond milk:
1 cup almonds
4 cups water
blend in a blender, strain through a nut milk bag or layers of cheesecloth.
I use almond butter(raw) instead. It allows you to skip the straining.
2 tbsp raw almond butter
2 cups water
Blend.

What about panty hose? Wouldn't they work as a strainer?
Clean of course!

Islegirl Sue said she tried it and it didnt work...well they were knee highs...maybe control top panty hose??? They sure would hold it all in. hahahaha Maybe it would be soooo held in that no mylk would come thru???

Oh. I just figured if there were strong enough back in the day when I wore 'em to shove in and hold all my fatness together, surely they could squeeze some mylk out...LOL!

Veganforlife, you and rawrawks have got me laughing already! Yup, I tried the "kneehighs" from the $ store and I just made a mess with them. They were too narrow and I found it very hard to squeeze the milk through them compared to the cheesecloth. Anyway, no matter, I found the paintbags, thanks to Revvell who told me to look in a "paint store":o. Duh! I looked everywhere else but never thought of that! Now I have to go buy them today and make soak some more almonds tonight.

I did the squeeze thing until I bought a soy mylk maker (Soy Quick) and I turn the heat function off and LOVE it. SOOOOO convenient. I find I make "tons" more mylk than before. So worth it. I actualy bought it from Maraw (Anna Tipps - one of our dear posters, who is battling cancer).

Oh yeah, just make sure you can turn OFF the heat feature. And you know you can google user manuals and probably download one...

I went to Benjamin Moore (a paint store, Revvell) and bought 1 bag for 1.99. I thought I'd just try 1 for now. It looks perfect. Thanks so much guys.:D
