We have a good number of acres of hemp cultures on our prairies up here in Canada. Apparently hemp is becoming a regular crop in other countries as well. Two companies that I know of supply raw hemp products: mostly hemp seeds, cold processed raw hemp protein and hemp flour.
Hemp is very nutricious. In addition, for those who need a little extra protein, hemp protein is easy to digest and has lots of magnesium.
Has anyone tried hemp ?

All good,

Love hemp butter and the seeds work well too. Dislike hemp protein powder & oil. Hemp is definitely one of the healthiest foods. That and chia and you have all the omegas, protein and other nutrients you need.

I really love hemp seeds, especially. They are my all time favorite seed.

I will occasionally use hemp protein powder in a smoothie, too.

I use Canadian hemp seeds almost everyday. Love them on a salad. I'm so glad Canada doesn't have any ridiculous laws against growing it for food. US agriculture is missing out on this.

Hey, got any links to the companies? I'd lvoe to find it cheaper than my little health food store at the mall!
Wish I could find some affordable hemp fabric, too! I'd make myself a whole wardrobe!

I forgot about hemp butter ! Its sooo good ! I am going to get some... mix it with a bit of raw honey and cinnamon...yum !

I'm glad to see people including hemp in their diet. An elderly couple talked to me about their aches and pains. I sent them a bag of hemp seeds. Its been 5 years and they still consume hemp every day. Apparently they feel better than ever and have started walking almost every day. They are in their 80's and participate in "fun" walk competitions. Hemp is energising.

I use hemp oil (usually 50-50 with olive oil) and I add hemp seeds to my green smoothie most days..

I use hemp seeds with shell on for hemp milk, which is the only vegan milk my hubby will drink now! Yay! I found a raw way to sub dairy for him finally. Hulled hemp seeds tossed in smoothies and salads (massaged kale with avo, toms and chipotle).

It's very important to make sure the hemp you use is truly organic, not just pesticide free. Manitoba Harvest explanation: Cross contamination can occur in pesticide free (non organic grown seed) as wind blow or sharing of trucks, equipment or storage bins.

i got my last batch of hemp stuff from matt monarch's site (am i allowed to say that?) i'm on the mailing list and i got a discount code and got 3 lbs of seeds and a bottle of hemp oil for about $17!

and yea, hemp protein is pretty blech! :)

hey - question - i'm off to google, but - my husband is in the army and won't try any of my hemp creations cause he's afraid he'll test positive if they drug test him - would that happen?

This is in the above link:

Moreover, the strains of hemp plant used for food have been naturally selected so as to produce little THC, generally. These nutritional varieties of hemp plant grow in temperate climates to heights of 14 feet, and as with many agricultural grains, their seeds can be harvested in a conventional manner with a combine. Since the most modern handling and shelling of the seed minimize its contact with leaf resins, the shelled seed itself and the oil, nut butter, and other foods prepared from the seed have been made with THC concentrations as low as 1 ucg/g (ppm) to nondetectible. These modern hemp products, when consumed in normally recommended amounts, should all but eliminate positive urine tests for THC.3 Studies conducted on older versions of hemp seed oil found some to contain THC concentrations that resulted in positive urine tests.4

VFL, always on the ball!! :) i just found this - it's 11 years old - but it's about a military judge ruling on a positive drug test that supposedly resulted from hemp oil - http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3850 - to be on the safe side, i'll just keep my hemp away from him :D

I put raw hemp protein powder in my smoothies. It's fine. I haven't tried any other uses, though. Is hemp butter raw? Do you think I can find it at my local Whole Paycheck?

Good morning,
I bought hemp protein powder for smoothies. I am interested in hemp seeds.
My questions are, what is the difference between shelled and hulled hemp?
Do I need to grind them up to use in smoothies?
thank you

I love the benefit of hemp seeds and it contains many essential amino acid.

Omega 3/6 on top of nice nutrient in them. They are safe for children.

I use them with my salad/smoothies and even desert. I make milk with them.

I use Nutiva hemp seeds, oil and protein. I made an awesome Waldorf salad juice with hemp oil in it. I bought a hemp uncookbook too. Took me awhile to be willing to try it (never got into that stuff LOL) now I love it in my morning smoothies and on my salads.

How do you know if hemp seeds are raw or not?

Every day - I could not do without the protein powder 'cause it is so yummy. I also enjoy the seeds and butter, plus the oil.

Right now, I am juice feasting, but I can't wait to get back to my hemp foods.

How do you know if hemp seeds are raw or not?

I met some hemp farmers who told me the raw hemp seeds are hulled mechanically at low temps.

People that sell hemp like Ruth, of Ruth's Hemp, are usually raw-aware.. "Ruth's Hemp Protein is raw".

Hope this helps,

I found out years ago, after reading the Rainbow Green diet by Dr Cousens MD, that I am a protein/ carb type. In other words I do better with a bit more protein than a carb type individual. Oh and yes, the Rainbow Green diet is raw... the chef at Dr Gabe Cousens clinic is none other than Chad Sarno..the Raw Chef.
So having discovered this about myself, my afternoon brain fogs cleared up. I take small amounts of hemp protein in my shakes and I consume nut butters ( almond and sesame mainly) which I make myself or that I buy in bulk at a health food coop. Sometimes I go several days without the extra vegetable protein: I listen to my body, my body tells me when I need to take in more protein.
In addition, Dr Cousens wrote a book about becoming depression free and he mentions that for some people protein, amino acids, is key to healing their chemistry.
I have tried pretty well all of the vegetable proteins, and while they are all good it seems to me that hemp protein is the best.

All good,

DD sees hemp seed package and goes nuts. Throughout the whole store "hemp seed" , "mama hemp seed please", "eat hemp seed" :-)

She loves hemp seed. Todays request hemp seed soup. We do usually sprinkle it on our soup. She has always loved hemp seed and one day ate about 7 Tbsp. as a 1yr + and I thought I would try it. I was not as wowed as she was and she loves it to this day and often has it with banana (one of the cleanest ways to have a toddler eat hemp seed by dipping into them).

That is so inspirational. I saw a mom at a health food coop who was buying a big bag of hemp seeds...I asked her about how she uses hemp and she said she puts it into anything she can like salads and so on. Her kids literally beamed with health. I mean they glowed! I wish I had started my kids eating hemp at a younger age.

This morning I made hemp balls with a little raw buckwheat honey and spice cake spices ( a mix of organic cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg and clove.. you can make your own mix and it tastes great! ) and lots of hemp seeds! Its 2 hours since I ate and my body has energy and I have no cravings: I feel nourished and energized. Hemp seeds are awesome!

PS.. Its nice to get confirmation ( from the posts here ) that hemp is beneficial...its a relatively newly available food. We are all different but it seems hemp is suitable to a lot of us. Its a low maintenance crop and so there is a potential lowering of prices as it gets more popular. And, who knows?.... it may become part of the sustainable planetary solutions that are emerging.

btw, Udo Erasmus, a world authority on fats and oils, speaks highly of the virtues of hemp oil.

All good,
