Kale brought me here.....
I was searching for kale recipes the first week of October and came across the kale & avocado salad. The "Raw Food" blogs intrigued me and I ended up at Alissa's website.
I had heard of raw once, last year, while watching a reality show where one of the people took the other house guests to a raw food restaurant in LA. I prompty forgot about it until earlier this month.
What hooked me were the gourmet photos of the food and ingredients seemed to be things I liked anyway.
The first Saturday I did my raw shopping at HEB and ended up spending over
$100. I bought fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds and a bottle of Spirulina capsules (though it still sits on my desk unopened).
I've never been much of a meat eater to begin with but definitely not vegetarian or vegan (not sure what all those different types are) more like
a tea and toast person.
Funny thing is, back in 1970 my Mom got into "health" foods. All the sugar
and processed anything went out and hello carob and lentils:rolleyes: Needless to say being kids, my sisters and I were not too impressed. Mom even had all those things sprouting in jars on the kitchen counter! My sisters and I never kept it up after we left home.
I've always eaten fairly healthy. Now I'm 48 and my husband is 52.
Second week, I ordered the 5-tray Excalibur dehydrator and made my first batch of flax crackers. Oh, and my husband bought me a young Thai coconut from the Hong Kong Market on Steuber-Airline for $1.49. I watched a youtube to see how to open it - fun! He got me another one last week and they had gone up to $1.59.
Third week got the Cook's Helper to make the zucchini noodles.
My sister-in-law got me a bunch of raw food (fast food) from a lady
at the market but I've never really liked cookies. It looks like it's
basically ground nuts, seeds and dried fruit with agave nectar thrown
in. I plan to save them for in-flight snacks.
I'm using my "Osterizer" (circa 1989) which has a small food processor attachment and seems to be working fine for now. I do plan on getting the Vitamix asap.
I've been using up the few non-raw bits that I've had left over in the pantry and the refrigerator the rest I'll give to a food pantry.
We're both going into this slowly...
Basically green smoothie in the morning, fruit and salad the rest of the day and a brazil nut at night. I have made the spaghetti sauce (my husband heated up his portion), portobello with corn salsa, kale and avocado salad,
made the flax crackers and I also made the chocolate mousse. I still have
a 1/2 cup of coffee in the morning but that will be easy to give up as I've
never been much of a coffee drinker.
I had to get the Nama Shoyu from Whole Foods in town (we're in the outskirts of the city) which was a drag. My local health food store is
useless - they didn't have dulce flakes (though I'm still not quite sure
what they are!), rows and rows of vitamins though.
Also, my only daughter is getting married next week and we'll have to do
quite a bit of visiting, dining out with relatives, etc....I'll just stick
with salads. Dessert isn't an issue as I've never ordered dessert
unless it's chocolate mousse.
I will be ordering Alissa's book and DVD on Monday - I wish they had it at
Barnes and Noble:( I ended up getting a Cousens book and some other recipe book yesterday.
I love reading the 30-day challenge threads and find it's helpful to
see exactly what goes into making the recipes.
I can hardly wait to try all the gourmet-type recipes once the wedding
is over.
Sorry to be rambling!
