Day 8 on 100% raw, and for the past two days I've gotten really sleepy (right around the same time, approx 4:30 / 5:00 ish) after eating a raw meal. Not sure as to why this is... detox? bad food combination? ???

My first raw meal I ate about a week ago, I got a distinct buzz and felt really energized. But now I want to crawl into bed and take a nap. (Which I did yesterday for an hour.)

Any thoughts as to why this would be? Sorry, I'd search the board for it, but I think "tired" is too generic to pull up targeted results.

And if this helps, I ate a salad (greens, tomatoes, sprouts, celery, mushrooms) with Alissa's Creamy Italian Dressing. Then I got a craving for something sweet, so I went ahead and had a banana with a few spoonfuls of raw honey and walnuts... and then 2 handfuls of goji berries.

Oh, and I got plenty of sleep last night, and have been drinking water throughout the day.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm new raw food world too, so I can't say for sure but I would tend to think that it's your body detoxing and healing...I'm on day 5 and have been having energy swings as well. I think it's perfectly normal.

I am glad that you can take a nap when you feel the need. I still (after four and a half years of raw) get an occasional evening when I am just exhausted and have to go to bed.

Anything too sweet makes me tired, I call it 'food coma'. I think I read somewhere it's from an insulin blast to handle the sugar. Nuts make me get food coma when I mix them with anything sweet too. I can put bananas in green smoothies without getting it though, because the fiber slows down the sugar release, so maybe try those

thanks all for your replies. Yeah, Sport, I'm pretty lucky right now that my schedule allows for naps if need be. (And I'm the type of person who can fall asleep anywhere, anytime!)

I think it was the combining of sweets/nuts/veges all in one meal that was causing the drowsiness. Yesterday I stuck to one thing (Alissa's broccoli soup, absolutely delicious!) and I was fine. It is interesting to feel the affect of food combining! I'd never noticed before, but apparently raw is helping me become more in touch with such things. Cool.

I'm curious... when you were eating all SAD, did you ever get drowsy after a meal?

I know with me that's one of the reasons I disliked the effect of SAD food on my body so much... it made me sluggish, drowsy, headachey and BLEGH after every meal! Even when I was eating what some folks consider "healthy" cooked meals, like rice and veggies, I still got drowsy. My fiance describes it as "feeling beat up by my food!"

If that happens occasionally with a RAW meal, don't worry so much about it. In fact, don't worry about the journey so much in general. ;)

Now, off my soapbox and, because I'm a questioner/worrywort myself, I'd say you nailed it when you figured out it's the food combining that's probably making you sluggish. ;)
