My husband came home with a cold (cough & bad sore throat) last week and it has finally caught up to me. My throat is on fire and it feels awful, any ideas on what to eat? I don't think I've ever been sick while raw, so this is new.

Smoothies would feel good, I know that. I'm limited on cash tho and have no idea what else to eat. I suppose it won't be the end of the world to have some warm tea...better than cream of wheat which is what I keep wanting.

Any other ideas??

awwww, poor love. There is an herbal tea made by Traditional medicines called Gypsy Cold Care. It works really well!

I read in David Wolfe's book to drink nothing but cantelope juice and water when you have a cold or flu and did this for my husband once and it seemed to work.

Also, I learned from a naturopath I used to go to to do the wet sock treatment. Here is what it does:
"Effects of the Wet Sock Treatment: This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and decrease congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating action and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections. "

You can find out how to do it here:

Hope you feel better quickly!

Blessings~

Sorry you're not feeling well! I don't have any suggestions as to what to eat, but I do know that garlic will take away a sore throat and a cold. Hold a clove in your mouth, squeeze it gently now and again with your teeth and let the juice run down your throat. Takes the pain right away.

ya kinda smell like garlic -- but you feel better!! I chew on parsley to cut the garlic smell.

Hi Rawmommie,

Well, this is actually the time to NOT eat as much as possible. When your body is going through this it's best to drink water only and rest, rest, rest. But if you can't do that, then eat very lightly...oranges, melons, grapes, that sorta thing.

You want to allow your body to dispense all/most of it's energy on healing and cleansing rather than having to work at digesting food.

I LOVE what Victoria B. wrote in 12-Steps to Raw about when we have cold/flu symptoms that the body automatically goes into a mode to prevent us from eating: sore throat (so swallowing will be painful as to not desire to eat), coated tongue (so we lose our sense of taste), stuffy nose (so we can't smell the aroma of foods).

But try gargling with some sea salt water. I hope you feel better soon!

Also, if you're not objected to doing them, enemas to help pull the stuff out through your bowels is good too! Always helped me!

Thank you so much! You girls are really speedy! ;)

I'm going to go look at that site right now for the wet sock treatment? Sounds funny, but I'm willing to try anything. :p

I usually want orange juice when I've got a cold. Can you buy some oranges to juice? Do you have a citrus juicer? We love fresh squeezed OJ here! Also, you can use the orange juice with a frozen banana and some strawberries for a nice smoothie.

The cantaloupe juice sounds refreshing.

Good luck,

Rachel Johnson

I suggest raw honey. That should be very soothing on your throat.

Feel better soon!

Hey there rawmommie, I hope you're feeling better. Also I was wondering did you try the wet sock method, and did it help? Blessings.
