View Full Version : indigestion from grains?

OK, I decided to make Alissa's granola, because I kept reading Rawkinlocs posts about it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. LOL! :p
So anyway, I sprouted my buckwheat and made it, and after the first bowl I got indigestion. I thought it was because I hadn't eating enough fruits and veggies to balance it that day, so I drank some spinach juice,a nd that helped, but then I had gas all night (sorry, complete overshare).
So I tried it again today, and same thing happened - indigestion, though not as bad. Could it be the grains? Or maybe I didn't sprout them properly? Does anyone else experience these effects?

Hey Vegbaby!
Well, I'm not sure because from what I read, buckwheat isn't technically a grain. I think Alissa mentions this in her book as well.
Maybe it was the nuts (did you soak them first?)
Now if it WERE grains such as wheat, etc...some raw foodists say that we aren't meant to eat/digest them. I guess soaking and sprouting is supposed to make them digestable (?)
I believe that anything we can't easily chew well (grains, certain greens, broccoli, etc.) then more than likely we won't digest it well and probably shouldn't eat. BUT, since I'm still transtioning, I use grains to get me by and later after being raw (consistently) for about a year or so, then I'll begin tweaking things and removing things.

Thanks, Rawkinlocs. You know, I've been thinking, and I think it may be two things: just me and improper sprouting. I don't think I let the buckwheat sprout long enough. Also, I remembered that I used buckwheat for Alissa's hamburger buns, and I didn't have indigestion, but they do give me gas. So, I should probably avoid too much buckwheat, and when I do it eat, sprout it properly!

it could be bad food combining too...if you eat fruit with anything else it will ferment inside - which can cause indigestion...its best eaten alone !!
did you rinse the buckwheat well during the soaking time ? but i would say its the combo thing..

Actually, the banana helped. It was worse without the banana...who knows! I have an automatic sprouter which rinses the seeds all day, and I changed the water twice a day.
