I'm doing a bunch of dehydrating here, right now I'm doing my last batch of bananas *yum* We love fruit chips. Anyway, I've never done apples before, but want to try it to dehydrate overnight. How do I prep the apples for this? I'll prep them the last hour that my bananas are going so that I can put them in and get going immediately, but I have no clue how to remove the cores and how thick to slice them (I'm doing it all by hand, no fancy slicing gizmos for us yet) I'm hoping that if I have a bunch of yummy dry fruit chips, that maybe our four kids will be more open to raw (my husband too, currently I make my meal and their SAD one every time)

I would peel the apples and you can do one of two things or even do both. Use a veggie peeler to make "slices". or you can slice in half then in quarters, then cut out the core and slice thin. I just made a big batch a week or so ago and they turned out great. If you want them to not turn brown, the ones you cut put in a bowl with water and lemon! have fun!

I dehydrated 35 gallon ziploc bags full of apple slices last fall.

Here's what I did. I cored them with this (http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=12&categoryCode=CE).

Then I sliced them (unpeeled) with this (http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K5662.desc.Fuller-Kitchen-Solutions-VBlade-Mandoline-Slicing-Kit).

I spread them evenly on the dehydrator tray (I did not use any paraflex sheets, just laid them right on the plastic) and lightly sprinkled them with cinnamon.

If I were hand slicing them, I would try to get them the same thickness so they all dry pretty much the same. You'll love them! We gave them as gifts - always well received, they're so tasty! *Ü*

i never peel my apples when i dehydrate them. what i do though... which my kids and every other person who tries them LOVES... is i buy an assortment of apples so each bit of apple has a different flavour! it keeps them eating them longer without getting bored of the taste. ;)

i core my apple with this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B00004OCKT/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=284507&s=kitchen)

and then i would take the pieces and cut them each into 3 or 4 slices so the slices aren't too thin.

place them in the dehydrator and enjoy!!!

Hey I have one of those lol I'm really glad that I asked about this. I'll be sure to slice my apples down from the coring too. Can I do pears that way too? I'm new to dehydrating everything that isn't banana chips and beef jerky (for the husband)

I'll do that!

And, even better, my husband just handed me the debit card to buy Alissa's book, I ordered it at Amazon and got free shipping. In the next two weeks I'm going to be busy BUSY reading it.

you can do pears too. bear in mind that when ripe, pears are wetter than apples so they might take longer.

These are wonderful!! I made my first batch about a week ago. I did put them in lemon and water before putting them in the D. They taste very sweet! I love it!

I use an apple corer and the mandoline and sprinkle them with cinnamon and they are great. I'm using them for Christmas gifts. Awesome!
