A woman who "tried Green Smoothies for a few days" during one of my GS Challenges on another site claims GS's gave her constipation and that's why after 5 days she stopped drinking them.

She later informed me that she had suffered Constipation prior to starting the GS's but had "gotten over it" before.

Now she's talking a few others folks out of Green Smoothies because they read her posts about it.

I'd like to know if anyone else here has any experience with Green Smoothies + Constipation?

Based on my own experiences, GS's do just the OPPOSITE of constipation. ;) But if you have experienced symptoms like this, do tell me so I can post some other folks's experiences (anonymously) on the other site and prevent a few other folks from jumping OFF the Green Smoothie wagon! :Q

Ya, if I use too many bananas and/or not enough greens or other fruit then nothing will move for me.
Bananas can cause constipation.

I would want to know how much water overall (straight water and water in produce) she was taking it. IF she was having a green smoothie each day, but also a lot of dehydrated foods and/or lots of nuts and seeds unsoaked, then YES, the added fibre of a GS could cause her constipation. I would suggest to her to use apples or pears, or even grapes in her GS. or start off with a "softer" green such as spinach or bok choi, rather than kale or chard.

Remind her that just like anything in our lives we have to experiment to find the right combination for YOU and YOUR body.

Best of luck!

Just a note, guys: she is NOT a raw foodist!! She's a SAD eater who was just trying to add Green Smoothies into her diet. :)

Not knowing what HER "green smoothies" consisted of, it's hard to say what the issue is yet, like you, I experience the opposite of constipation. One of the best greens I've found for remedy of that ~ baby spinach.

Well there you go! THAT speaks volumes. Cracks me up how folks always blame the good foods! Have her start her day with a couple glasses of water. She'll get things moving!

I know if I do kale, banana, strawberry and blackberry (my fave combo) or maybe a kiwi too, then all hands on deck because it will travel right on through the old digestive track.

If I just drink smoothies I don't go for a day or so. To be regular I have to add leafy greens to my lunch and dinner.

constipation if you dont up your water. I would think that adding green smoothies would add substantial fiber to your diet especially if you do not eat alot of fruits and veggies to begin with.

I would not discount her experience.

I think that when you add anything cleansing to your diet, it may just stir up more than your colon can handle.

I'm similar to her. I have to make sure I put A LOT of water in it bc I have a tendency not to drink as much water. It's just too much fiber to for me. When I juice...it's great.

When I first started with green smoothies, they were really thick and I had a problem. Once I added plenty of water to make them thinner, I was fine.

Also, If bananas are used, and they aren't ripe enough, that can also be a problem.

The only thing i can see because i tend to have this problem is that she may have a blockage in her guts and green smoothie isn't a forcefull food to push the rest down. I can promise if she stick to her green smoothie, she will get regular. It is my first time that i don't need to do anything to be regular.

She should go for walk and do a moderate exercise, it will work its magic.

Green smoothie doesn't cause constipation unless she has a food allergie which could lead to that. It will do the opposite and restore the flora.

I would go learn about anema, it will help to flush the stuff out.

I would take therapeudic enzyme and prohobiotic.

I am not a doctor and only share what i did for me. She should research everything.

Hope she does green smoothie again, for this is so healing in so many ways.

p.s HER PANTS HAS TO BE LOOSE. Any tighness will lead to constipation if she is subject to this problem
