I am new to raw, 40 days and counting. Green smoothies, green salads,...
my stools are green. Is this normal?
Sorry for the "poop" thread.

Hi Deb. So this is normal. I do consume alot of green. I had read somewhere that the stomache may be took acidic.....but that does not seem right. Thought I would get
a more accurate picture here.

Hi FrannieGreen ~ I really don't know if it's "normal", I can only say it's normal for me... I drink 1.5-2 quarts of green smoothies per day plus other greens. I also try to get in 1 quart of green juice. I do that about every other day.

I think you've got a really good question here. *Ü*

certainly not unusual but if you fancy a change of colour, then eat lots of beetroot.

It's natural. Wonder what color stools and pee is for those folk who drink those strange colored electrolyte fluids. <<< ---- normal or natural?

Hi folks,

green stools mean that you are taking in far more chlorophyll than your body can use. There's no danger in this, except that your body has to work to process everything that we consume and your body is currently working to process things it can't use.

The same thing will happen with very high concentrations of any food (or more correctly, phytochemicals which give food it's color.) Eating tons of papaya often means orange stools, tons of watermelon, red ones, etc.

In an ideal situation, we would be taking in no more -- or less -- of anything than the body needed. Granted, this is difficult to do as we have no way of knowing what the body needs; except one: when clean enough, if we learn to listen to the body -- really inhabit the body as opposed to the space between the ears -- we can consume much less food, and always be giving the body what it needs. By doing so, we use far less energy for processing food (the single most energy-expensive process the body undertakes) and have much more available for cleansing and healing.

I guess when your stool turns colors, then eat less than a ton.

I don't understand people who keep saying "ton". O.k., I know that means a lot yet, a lot compared to WHAT? Is a handful of spinach on your smoothie a TON?

Can our water intake be measured by weight? Or, should it?

I know I'm being nit-picky yet, a TON? What's up with that? Oh, I ate a TON of bananas today! What's that, 3? Hmmm. Wondering if I did eat a TON of bananas if my stool will turn white. I guess the TON any other color will outweigh the TON of bananas though ~ unless all I eat is a TON of bananas and nothing else. Hmmm. How many days do I have to eat a TON of bananas to get white stool? How cool would that be? :p

Well, this ins interesting. I do fill my Vitamix up about a 1/3 of kale or spinach, and then add an apple, orange, flaxseed. Sometimes a banana. Plus a green lunch.
So I may be getting enough greens and I should maybe have a fruit salad for
lunch or maybe a sandwich (sprouted bread and nut butter).
Just to mix it up some.

Oh, one other thing. Loren, my salads have gotten alot smaller in the last 3 weeks. So I am listening to my body and just eating the amount I need. I find this very fascinating to see how little it takes to satisfy me.

I eat a lot of greens, too. Don't stop eating a lot of greens! Noone ever dissected their sad poop (well probably no one..) and wondered if they were digesting it properly.

If the green bothers you try adding more red foods to your diet=)> Make brown! =)

When I am having a lot of green smoothies I have the same issue. I am comforted that my body is getting all it needs, with some to spare. Though, now I wonder, could this be a digestive imbalance that will correct over time? Do some green smoothie drinkers not have green poop?

VERY GOOD QUESTION THICK! I was wondering the same thing!

I will not give up on my green. but maybe incorporate other things more often too.

Hi Revvell, I think the word "ton" is an easy word to use. I do eat alot or just under a ton. ;)

A pound of greens a day for 5 1/2 years would be a ton=)

I just want to thank everyone. Green is good. A ton is not bad. And you all are wonderful to help me understand my somewhat "weird" questions.

Ahhh, well, that works. So, some days if I miss the pound, I can eat 2 to make sure I get my ton in in 5 1/2 years .... or.... just stretch it out and make it an even 6. :D

Revvell? I remember one of your early RAWkin' Radio broadcasts with Alissa and didn't she say "ton" a lot? or was it another word? I thought it was ton...though...

Hi Frannie,

Great to hear that you are paying attention and consuming no more than you need. Over-consuming is never beneficial and as you get more efficient you can definitely meet your body's needs and free up energy for other things by eating less.

Or at least less than a ton. (for you, Revvell) incidentally, I appreciate your preference for precision in language and generally share it. On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for trying to understand what someone means...

Don't have to "try" to understand what folks mean if they say what they mean. Exaggeration by saying a TON of food could mean pretty much anything, eh? People get lazy and use words like "ton" and everyone nods knowingly saying, "oh, I understand" yet, they really don't. That's why there's so much confusion in people whose first language is English. They may "think" they understand what someone means yet, a TON for one, isn't the same as a TON for another, unless we're really talking tons here ~which I'm sure we're not. :)

Ton means---more than I care to measure, or report.

So, I think Revvell's concern isn't nit picking slang words, just wanting people to be precise when talking about food quantities. A ton of smoothies to one person might be an 8 oz glass every two days, whereas a ton to me would be say 5 full vitamix canisters a day=p

Loren

Fair enough. I don't drink any green smoothies, which is, I'm pretty sure, somewhat less than a ton.
