The question regarding carbon footprints got me wondering about the members on this forum who are commuting to w*rk and what method they use.
I currently have a commute of over an hour each way (fortunately it is not a painful one - meaning traffic flows) and drive a 2000 Dodge Stratus with over 125,000 miles on it, not the greenest of vehicles, but it is paid for, runs great, and I average 23 mpg. In the not so distant future it will probably be replaced by a Prius or Versa, but I am not able to justify the purchase at this time.
Of course it would be great to walk or bike to work, but just not realistic due to living several counties away!

An '06 V-Dub, Harvest Moon Beige convertible! I don't go too far though daily. I try to not leave a footprint through other ways. Gotta drive unfortunately...

No public transportation where I live. I am only a couple miles from work but am not going to ride a bike at 5 am in the snow, sorry (yes, it is snowing here today)! :D We have nice old used vehicles.
1996 Suburban...the only one that will hold the whole family
19___ ?? Olds 88. It is literally falling apart piece by piece. We will drive it till it dies.
1994 Subaru Legacy. Our newest acquisition, only $900! :D I love only paying $25 to fill it up rather than the $100+ for the Suburban.
Our cars are not the greatest as far as pollution etc. I would love to build an electric solar powered car (I have numerous articles ) but my dh is not remotely interested and I could not do it myself. But as a large family we have a small footprint. Our gas and electric and water bills are lower than most of those of a much smaller family. We buy nearly EVERYTHING used. We recycle. Garden.
When I was expecting our 5th child, I got a very nasty letter from an aunt of mine, talking about how we were going to be too hard on the earth with our large family etc. She lives in a McMansion built literally on top of a mountain, just her and her husband, has three cars and lots of fancy schmancy toys. What hypocrisy. I told her my kids would be paying her social security payments so she had better watch out.

I drive a 2005 volkswagen golf diesel, which I love to fill with biodiesel :) I have about a 15 mile commute each way, and I get about 36 miles to the gallon (fifty on the highway!).

I'm still driving the 1988 Ford BroncoII that I bought in 1987. It only gets an average of 16 miles per gallon, but I don't drive very far. Only 115,000 miles in 22 years, or roughly 5K a year.
I think carbon footprint is about more than gas. How about the metal and resources to make and dispose of the cars we drive. I'm sticking with this car as long as possible. It should have another 100,000+ miles left on it. I might be in a retirement home before my car is ready to retire.

NICE! If I did buy another car I would seriously consider the Jetta 5-speed diesel. I rode in one. It was nice. The owner said he drove it cross country and it got 75 miles per gallon. Wonder if his math was faulty?

Nope, my father in law has a new jetta diesel and he gets mileage that high. It is amazing! I highly highly recommend them, especially if biodiesel is an option in your area.
I also agree with the previous poster about the footprint of new cars, though. I fully intend to drive this thing until my as-yet-unborn children are ready to inherit it. But, if someone needs a new car, german diesel is the way to go ;)
my bike :)
I second that.
Really dislike public transportation... especially with the like 50 years old metro cars, you get deaf in them.

I don't drive, period. If I don't walk to school DH drops me off in a 2008 Honda CRV. I do use public transport. on occasion but mostly in the summer because the closest bus stop is a little over a mile from my house.
