I was a bit curious. Is nutritional yeast considered raw? I have a dip/dressing that I make up with lemon, nutritional yeast, celtic salt and either water or olive oil. I even crave the tast of it sometimes.

Anyway, can someone tell me if this is considered raw or acceptable to eat if you are trying to eat all raw!

Thanks,

Teri H.

Nutritional yeast is not raw, but it's normally used in such small quantities as a seasoning that I doubt it would hurt to use it occasionally. I think it's a matter of personal preference.

I have been wondering about this too. I also make a delicious dressing with nutritional yeast. Has anyone noticed any negative effects when consuming it?

Nutritional Yeast Flakes - I really like the flavor. I've been told that it is a good source of B-12. yes? - and btw, I think it is grown on molasses... (I think) ;)

Yes, it is grown on molasses.

The B-12 content would depend on whether the yeast was fortified. Some brands are fortified and some aren't. The best tasting brand I've found is Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula - it is a reliable source of B-12, and is also fortified with riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, and biotin. It is a good source of folic acid, and provides several minerals including selenium, chromium, zinc, phosphorus, and magnesium. Red Star is also rich in the amino acids lysine and tryptophan.

It pays to read labels at the store because some brands of nutritional yeast contain whey, which you would not want to eat as a vegan.

Whey?!?!?! Yuck! I had no idea. I will definitely pay more attention when I buy it. The crappy thing is, my market has no ingredient listings on its bulk food products. So annoying!

Kris, you are kidding, your bulk store does not have the ingriedents? I am so fortunate then! My regular grocery store has a bin of raw nuts and things and they add ingriedents to everything! Even if it is just "raisins".
I'll count my lucky stars then! :)
