I've been searching through the threads and can't (yet) find a good (easy/simple) recipie for raw almond mylk and almond butter. Raw almond butter is $15 a jar!!!!! at the local grovery stores, so I'd like to find a better (cheaper) way to make it. Plus, I'd like to know the details of making almond mylk. I have sprout bag, which I think can be used to strain the mylk, but don't know if that is the best way (of if it will work at all).
Can someone link a the site to make these two items or share a quick and easy way to do it??
Please and many thanks!!!

Almond Mylk is so easy.
1 cup of soaked almonds ( I soak mine overnight)
4 cups water
blend on high in Vitamix for maybe 2 minutes, if that...just till blended well
strain thru nut milk bag, squeezing till the pulp is dryish
You can drink like this and store in fridge, I only keep mine two days.
or add it back into the VM add sweetener of choice, dates, honey, agave and vanilla is you like.
Makes just over 1 qt.
enjoy~

Where do you get a nut milk bag from??? And if you don't have that, what is a comparable substitute? I have a sprout bag, would that work?

It has to be a really fine mesh. I use a metal colander then a final strain through a piece of cheesecloth in the colander. Even a clean cotton cloth would work after the majority of the pulp has been strained.

Many of us here buy paint strainer bags. I got mine at Sherwin Williams for just over $1.00 each and I've been using them ever since. I just used them today because I juice wheatgrass in my Blendtec. They've held up beautifully. *Ü*

I use a mesh bag with a drawstring closure that I bought in the produce section of an organic grocery store. It is intended for storing vegetables. Works great for straining nut milk. Comes in different sizes. The small one is just the right size for straining one cup of almonds and can be washed by hand or in the top rack of the dishwasher. I've been using the same one for several years.

Almond Butter
3 cups RAW, sprouted almonds
Grind in Food Processor until rice size bits.
Remove and add to Vita-Mix with Sea Salt, 2 Tablespoons GrapeSeed Oil
Run in the Vita-Mix, alternating the Speed to keep it from getting to Hot, about a Minute or less.

Hi RawKnitster ~ I just bought the same bag while we were vacationing at Fort Worden in Port Townsend - I found them in the produce section of the Food Co-Op (less than $3). Ohhhh, I wish we had a store like that down here! *Ü*

When you make Almond Milk, make sure to keep the almond pulp to use in recipes later. I keep a tupperware container in the freezer and keep adding to it. Then, when I have quite a bit, I use it as "flour" in recipes.

I don't even bother straining my nut mylk especially if i am consuming it with in the same day and if it is made in the high speed blenders such as the vita mix. If you want the nut mylk to last a few days straining it is nice because leaving the pulp in can make it taste funny after more than a day in the fridge.
Trader Joe's sells raw almond butter at 5 bucks a jar.
i think the sprout bag will work but nuts have more oils in them so eventually your sprout bag will get more rancid or clogged pores in the fabric. Sprouts like air. So you would have to wash the sprout bag really really well after using it to make nut mylk.
