Hi everyone. I've lurked, unregistered, for a couple of days and decided to jump in. I live near Pensacola in the panhandle of FL. I've been struggling with a major weight problem for years before I finally decided that diets don't work and that I would have to change my lifestyle. Over the past year, I've begun eating more organic and nutritional foods, though there have been lapses. I wanted to lose weight, but I just couldn't commit. The last time I went to my doctor (early January) to renew my allergy medicine, he wanted to test me for diabetes and suggested that I start some therapy now.

That did it! I am so scared of all of those of allopathic medicines, even though I take allergy medication. I decided then and there to do something about this weight!

Then a couple of great things happened. I began attending the weekly "herb study" group at my local health food co-op and found that they studied more than just herbs. They studied all naturopathic/holistic healing. One of them is actually a commited raw foodist! Many of the others are mostly raw food eaters. I've since learned a great deal about nutrition and other holistic healing methods, and have begun adding more and more raw to my diet. I've been gathering the equipment I felt I needed, and have decided that now I'll take the plunge and go all raw.

I'm glad I found this site. I look forward to sharing with everyone here.

Welcome LadyCraft,

You're in good company. Florida is well represented here and growing stronger everyday. Glad to have you! I believe there are even a few members in the panhandle. If you click on the banana and type in: Florida, you'll be able to locate a few of the most recent threads about Florida and others members in Florida. You may find some raw neighbors! Happy searching. And welcome again.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Yes, Doe, we're VERY close to Alabama. It's a running joke around here that we're actually considered to be a part of "lower Alabama." :D I only live about 80 miles from my house to Mobile AL, and I live on the east side of Pensacola, across Escambia Bay. I used to cross that three-mile bridge that was splashed across the news after Hurricane Ivan last year... you know, the one with the semi dangling from one of the sections?

It's good to meet all of you. I was planning to go raw in September (when I had enough money to buy some groceries), but without planning to, I went all raw three days in a row with what I had in house at the time, and it was WONDERFUL! I felt fantastic. I actually experienced such a burst of energy! I want to experience that kind of energy everyday.

Hi LadyCraft, and welcome! :)

I'm another Floridian ... down on the Space Coast ... currently at high-raw. I had been 100% for a short time, but have slipped up a bit ... so I'm starting up again!

It's great to have you here ... this board is a wonderful inspiration, with great folks!

Carolyn :)

Thanks Carolyn. I hope you faired okay with Katrina.

Having survived two Cat 3 hurricanes and two tropical storms in less than a year, I really hope Katrina does not come our way.

I look forwarded to sharing and learning more with everyone in the group.

Hey LadyCraft,

How did y'all make it thru Katrina? Did it go thru your area? Luckily, we were spared this round (had some wind -- about 31 mph --- yesterday, and rain, from the outer bands, but nothing serious) ... we were slammed last year a few times. (My home is now finally in the works of being repaired now!) Where is Milton?

I hope you made it thru the storm ok!! (And/or that it doesn't head your way at all!!!)

Greetings Carolyn and Peanut

Thanks for your concern. Milton is just across the bay from Pensacola. The bridge (made famous after Ivan...the one with the semi dangling from one of the broken sections...) actually spans the bay and connects the two cities. I had to replace my roof from Ivan.

We're still recovering from Ivan and now from Dennis as well. Dennis' eyewall came up through Milton. We were very fortunate in that Dennis, though a Cat 3, was small and moved quickly, which minimized the damage. I lost some siding from home from Dennis.

With Katrina, I spent the entire day inside waiting for the hurricane to pass. Even as far from the eye as we were, we still received damage from the storm, with occasional hurricane force winds even out my way. Fortunately, I didn't get any damage from this storm. We just lost power for awhile. There was damage, however, to some places in Pensacola. The new naval commissary, at Corry Station in Pensacola, lost it's roof. Other places were also damaged.

Right now, our problem is gas. There is very little left in the area. We're the closest place to Alabama and Mississippy (along I-10) with gas and electricity so we get a lot of people coming over, gassing up everything they can get gas into and driving back to where ever it is that they're from.

We're also working hard to get supplies, equipment, money, and personnel organized and over to help.

I had to let my journal go for awhile, but I'm back now. I'll be restarting my 30-day goal. I'm determined to make it this time, Katrina or no Katrina...

Hi LadyCraft,

I hear you on the gas situation now ... it's bad here. There are a lot of stations now that aren't even selling any (bags over the nozzles, no prices listed on boards). (And those that are are pretty expensive.) It's a mess. Just like it was after Jeanne. Luckily, I'm just under a full tank right now, so I'm going to stretch it out as long as I can. :(

Sorry to hear about your damage. I've felt so badly for your area (prior to Katrina, also.) We don't need any more hurricanes anywhere!!! I'm still trying to get my home repaired from last year's! I talked to my contractor today, and she said that there are STILL a lot of blue tarps. It's awful.

And the damage from Katrina is just unbelievable. It breaks my heart completely. :(
