Maybe I'm just allergic or have a food sensitivity, but after eating a lot of brazil nuts the other day I felt super naseus and smelled like garlic (even though I hadn't eaten any garlic.) So please be careful eating brazil nuts, they could make you sick.

I always feel headachy and sick after I eat a bunch of brazil nuts. I thought it was just me. It's too bad cause I really like the flavor and texture of them.

They are high in selenium. I think I read somewhere that something like two nuts supplies enough to meet the RDA.

Hmmmm, I eat brazil nuts & I've never had a problem with them. How much do you eat a day & do you soak them?
I soak mine over night & just eat a portion size of them & I've had no adverse reactions to it

Have you tried the powder? I don't know if it's good. :)

Everybody's different, and as you get into this lifestyle your body will tell you what it's wanting. I can't eat too many of any kind of nuts, or I lose my well-being, as well as just feeling heavy. You may well have a slight allergy to brazil nuts. I do know they are supposed to be very good for us.

No one should eat unsoaked nuts if you ask me

One thing about brazil nuts is that they easily go rancid. You might have had ones that were just on the verge. Did they taste a little "off" when you ate them?

I looked up the symptoms of selenosis (selenium poisoning) and they were similar to what I experienced with the brazil nuts. I think they gave me too much selenium for my body.

The variety of nuts out there is one of the things I celebrate discovering since becoming raw. I always thought I hated brazil nuts until I tried them. They are now one of my favorites, but I find them very filling and only eat 3 or 4 per day. I can tell when they are 'off' and have to spit it out, because the taste is gross. So I agree with cara4art, that maybe yours have gone bad?

Well, while we're on the subject of Brazil nuts, I just have to tell you what I did last week.....Sigh
I like to soak a large batch of something then put it in the D. so I often fill up my ceramic crockpot for this, turn it on warm for a few minutes, just to warm up the water a bit, then shut off and go to bed. Done this many times.
You guessed it. I cooked those suckers by accident. .
All night.
Actually, the house smelled really good and I hated for them to go to waste, so I made up a brazil nut fudge with them, just like I would have done if they were raw, but the rest of the household doesn't like it. I ate some, but dare not eat too much....
Sigh.
Don't know what to do with the rest of the cooked Brazil nuts. I keep chickens, and they're now a week old...maybe they'll get them, unless someone has another idea.

Compost them. Anybody on this site that doesn't have a compost pile should get one goin'. I fill up bins daily of avocado/banana/citrus peels and all kinds of organic waste, to which I tote outside to my organic compost pile. I also have a compost-pile-of-shame, where inorganic food waste and cardboard and paper 'n stuff go. Once you get a nice pile going you will have excellent plant food, so you can grow some nice raw munchies and keep the cycle o' life goin'.

Now that I live on my own I'm seriously considering composting.......... it'll depend on whether my neighbors can stand the odor. I've been warned by previous landlords that they were not okay with composting due to the odor. I need to do more research, but I'm sure there are NON-odorous ways to do it. :D
And I've been stuffing my face with Brazil nuts for the last hour... and then just read this thread. But I'm not concerned. I've eaten them often in the past and had no issues... they were even my favorite nut as a child. I do, however, have a severe sensitivity towards Walnuts, oddly enough.

I personally have found that Brazil nuts are usually subjected to high heats so they can be dried enough to ship to the US. I imagine this could have some impact on the oils and how they might make you feel.

Green Woman if you never put meat, bones or any other animal products in your compost you shouldn't have a problem with odor and if you do, just pile some grass clippings, leaf rakings, dirt or other outdoors type waste on it and problem should be solved. I havent had to do that as ours never stinks but it does draw flies during the summer which can come indoors if the pile is too close to the house. Oh and a box of earthworms from the fishing department in Walmart dumped on your compost will help eliminate any chance of odor also. : )

Oh heavens, no I wouldn't be doing that!!!
Raw Vegan Compost Pile over here. :D
Thank you folks for sharing your experiences... my Landlord is a good fellow who adores me and I think I could get permission to at least experiment with a little compost pile for a few weeks... I'm super cautious in my new home because I want to live here in Peace and Contentment for the next 2-3 years. :)
At my old house, I allowed some negative experiences to taint the energy of the place but I am resolved to keep this new home very light. How's that for the unscientific side of me. ;)
