Hi all! I am on my second go round. Last year I was raw for a couple of months starting in April. April in Florida was so easy. Lots of fresh fruits and veggies.

I started back this week 100% raw (as opposed to raw all day and cooked in the evenings which is what I did last year). I'm into day three and already feeling good again.

The problem is I now live in Colorado and it is already getting cool in the evenings and the mornings especially. I don't yet have a dehydrator or a Vita-mix (need to get a job before I can justify these purchases) so I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do on the cool mornings when a nice cup of oatmeal (or grits and eggs!) would be so good. I've been having a cup of herbal tea but would like to have something more substantial to start the day off.

Any ideas?

Hey there!

Well eating raw doesn't always mean eating cold, you can warm up your almond milk (as long as it doesnt get heated over 105 degrees, I like to use the water bath technique to make sure it's a gentle heat)

here are 2 awesome recipes for breakfast

ps: they sometime mention the dehydrator, but you don't need one (I don't have one yet and i tried both recipes and it was delicious! :p)

Enjoy!

AppleMeal

2 apples
2 TB nut butter
2 TB raisins (or more if you like)
Ground Flax seed

Put apples and nut butter in food processor and process until consistency of oatmeal, add raisins, pulse in food processor until they are combined to your liking (I like it when they are broken up a little but still chunks). Remove from food processor and sprinkle with ground flax.

This would be good with some almond milk on it but I haven't tried it that way. I have also added cinnamon or gogi berries. Very filling, my son likes this recipe.

Blessings,
Heather

How do you get raw nut butter? What nuts does it come from and does it matter if they are pasteurized? And for the raisins, can you just buy regular raisins in a box?

Do you have Alissa's book? And we all can do whatever we want, like regular raisins in a box, but chances are they are heat-processed...and yes, I personally do not want pasteurized nuts - void of nutrition.

Hint? Get Alissa's book! ;)

I'm raw and I still have warm oatmeal for breakfast in the winter. Ordinary oatmeal flakes aren't raw. But, you can get real raw rolled oats right from Alissa's store. Or you can use soaked oat grouts. I put maybe a cup of soaked raw rolled oats or grouts in the blender (just an oridinary blender) with a ripe banana and enough hot (not boiling water - just barely hot to the touch) to get the contents to blend. The I add 1 Tbs of ground flaxseed and blend again. Pour in a bowl, add some cinnamon and raisins and you're good to go. A good raw book for those of us in colder states is Elysa Markowitz's 'Warming up to Living Foods' which has a number of warmed raw foods.

Well, looks like a trip to the HFS is in order! I like the idea of the buckwheats soaked with apples and cinnamon.....could maybe add some warm water to heat it a little.

The apples with nut butter I could tomorrow! Sounds delicious.

Dang, can't wait till I get a dehydrator so I can make granolas and dehydrate my soaked nuts and seeds.....

Thanks again!

Hello Cynthia,

No-tech solution... no blender or dehydrater required. Just mix it all with what you coinsider is the best amount of almond milk to get the desired consistancy.

4 Tbsp of flax meal
1 Tbsp almond butter
1 Tsp Raw honey... buckwheat is full of minerals and less sugar
1 small handful of raisins
Half a banana
Pinch of cayenne
optional: a few drops of ginger juice
optional: 1 tsp. of bee pollen
optional: 1 tsp sesame seeds

Thanks Rick. Guess I'm making things too complicated. Flax, honey, cinnamon, apples, and anything else that strikes my fancy.....

Cynthia - One of the simplest, BEST things you can feed your body is the Green Smoothie! I always use GS's for breakfast because they kick start my day with a steady dose of energy AND they are DELICIOUS!

You can make GS's with regular blenders, too, which will cost you anywhere from $20-60 at Wal-Mart, if you don't already have one at home.

My favorite Green Smoothie recipe is cheap and easy to make:

2-3 c. raw spinach, washed
1 orange (peeled)
2 bananas (peeled)
2 T honey or agave nectar
2-3 c water

Blend until creamy and smooth and enjoy!

For more ideas on how to make Green Smoothies and great information about why they are so good for you, check this out: Green For Life (http://www.greenforlife.com).

Around 15 men and women joined me for a GREEN SMOOTHIE CHALLENGE this summer - in three months of drinking GS's, everyone who drank them daily began experiencing some fantastic results... and these were SAD eaters who only altered their diets by drinking GS's!! Most of them were still eating meat and junk! And they still lost weight, cleared their complexions, healed themselves of some random issues/illnesses (including a urinary tract defect where the woman in question was unable to relieve herself naturally for years, and after a few weeks of GS's, was able to do so, naturally!!!)... and the list goes on!

:D

As you can see, I'm a huge supporter of GS's. :D

Oh, and my fiance lost 30 lbs (and several inches) by drinking GS's daily for the last year, and I have seen a huge boost in energy, emotional stability, and overall health when I am High Raw + GREEN SMOOTHIES daily, as adverse to just High Raw without them!

I posted this on the RFT boards in response to someone's query, but I felt it deserved a wider audience, considering how tremendously important Green Smoothies are to our RAW health!

P.S. Last month a meat-eating friend decided to begin drinking GS's. He has now become a vegetarian, and he drinks GS's daily and is excitedly sharing about Raw Foods with all of his friends... he's lost 20 lbs, a few inches around his girth, and he's been riding his bicycle all over San Francisco every day. He LOVES Green Smoothies - and so do we!!!

I LOVE RAW! :D

Thanks Green Woman!

I love GS but with the cool mornings i was looking for something warm to start my day with. Maybe I should just bundle up and do the GS anyway!

You are right, the health benefits are worth it. My husband is still SAD but I've convinced him to do the GS every morning and he feels better than he ever has.

Okay, off to make your GS. I happen to have all the ingredients.

Have a great day!

i LOVE green smoothies and you dont have to make them with ice.

in my vitamix i like to blend kale ( about 3/4 of the container ).... just the leaves torn up and about 3 cups of water... enough to blend.

then i add:

1 pear
1 apple
some vanilla bean ( or vanilla extract to taste)
2 small bannanas.

this combo is SO tasty.... the pear and the vanilla make it taste like a dessert
i usually make it at night with the stuff from the fridge. no need to use frozen fruit.
then overnight the flavours blend and in the morning it is a tasty breakfast.

i never seem to get tired of it. LOL
