I notice almost all of the recipes for crackers, bread, pizza crust and wraps, call for flax seeds, but flax really affects my hormones in a negative way.

Does anyone know if there's a substitute that works well in those types of recipes?

The flax seeds are used to help "bind" the crackers or whatever together. You may want to try chia seeds as they also produce a "geling"agent. I don't know because I'm always able to use flax...

So what does flax seed do to your hormones exactly? Can you say online?
I haven't eaten a lot of them so I don't know much about them.

I think sesame seeds would also make a good substitute, you can simply mix it with something like honey, fruit paste, that will hold it together.

I've never had chia seeds before but I guess I should try it. I know it's supposed to be good for you.

They make me really emotional. I'm normally very balanced all month but when I consume flax, I'll cry or get upset over the most ridiculous things. Flax is supposed to help your hormones but it definitely throws mine out of whack.

Sesame seeds sound like they would be good in crackers. Can you tell me what fruit paste is?

Flax contains a lot of phyto-estrogens, which can cause hormonal imbalance. Many people are already too high in estrogen, because plastic also causes estrogenic effects and we live in a very plastic world. I would recommend chia seeds, which are a traditional warrior food that won't throw your hormones out of whack. A lot of people do really well on chia seeds. I personally cannot digest chia seeds, so I have had to find other recipes. Besides I'm not much of a bread/cracker person anyways.

hi A1icia,

by fruit paste i meant date paste, since i don't have a dehydrator, dates are the only fruits that are dry enough to hold everything together, i like to make a mix with sesame seeds and nuts (sunflower seeds are pretty good but anything else would work).

For the paste recipe, just put some dates with a bit of water or lime juice in a processor, once you get that thick paste add the sesame/nuts mixture, you can put everything in the dehydrator or just shape it into a granola bar and eat it as a snack! :p

Buckwheat grouts also produce a kind of gel that holds them together. I've seen them used for breads and pizza crusts. I use them for a lower-fat granola when I don't want a lot of nuts.

Seedy, do you just grind the dry buckwheat groats or soak them? I have tons of them and don't know what to use them in. I'd like to try using them as a substitute for flax seeds in onion bread.

I've got ask about this, are they exactly the same, or is it like there are good fats and bad fats, so perhaps there are good phyto-estrogens and bad phyto-estrogens?

Thank you for this info. It's very helpful. I just bought a bag of chia tonight but now you have me concerned because I don't digest a lot of things well. I guess I'll still try the chia seeds and see what happens. At least I'll know not to eat too many at one time.

This sounds great. Thank you for sharing. I'll definitely be making my own bars with this.

I'd be interested in sprouting buckwheat, as long as it's not too complicated. I was looking at these at Whole Foods last night but they came in such a small packet. Do they quadruple in size or something? For instance if I was going to make bread or crackers, in terms of cups, before sprouting, how many buckwheat seeds would I need, do you know?

What a great idea ! I am going to get some dates tomorrow and make sesame ( unroasted black seeds + regular seeds ) bars.

Thank you,
