View Full Version : Getting enough protein

Hi everyone,
I am a bit shy, so please forgive my nervousness.
For protein, I have been making green smoothies (kale, spinach),
eating sprouted lentils, some nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews & walnuts),
I am going to purchase hemp seeds today.
Are there other good sources of protein?
I know I do not need as much protein on raw as I would when I was on SAD. But I want to be sure I am
getting enough. Plus I like to vary my meals.
Kindly,
Frannie

You're probably getting more than enough protein. Only about 5% of calories need to come from protein so it's hard not to get enough. Greens are full of amino acids which create protein in your body. You eat greens so I wouldn't worry about it. Protein deficiency is the least of your worries, it's so rare.

Have a fabulous day.

Hey! Sesame seeds are very high in calcium. Just thought...do you have Alissa's book? She discusses all of this...

You've gotten great answers here yet, let me ask you something (to give you something to consider and allay your fears) ~
How many people do you know of who have died form lack of "enough" protein? Not many, I'm guessing. Even on a SAD diet of pizza, chips, soda, etc. (and no, dairy does not provide calcium and the "protein" in cooked cheese is indigestible and probably not usable). More are dying from excess protein. Just google diseases caused by excess (animal) protein.
Where/how did you get calcium before raw? (I'm assuming you're going raw vegan?) You're getting waaaaay more now via the smoozies.
For answers on dairy (where many "think" they are getting calcium and protein... check http://NotMilk.com).

When it comes to the questions about protien I really have to say that Alissa's book has all you need to know in a nutshell. Her book is so great to answer all the raw food questions we all have at one time or another.

I use a green food powder like Alissa's. One heaping Tablespoon provides 4.4 grams of protein, 150% RDA of iron, and 33% RDA of calcium.

Thank you all.
Revvell, I am new to 100% raw day 15 and counting.
It is a question, the FIRST, question everyone asks me. So I am just getting my ducks in a row....kale in a row ;)
I don't like being cornered by someone saying 100% raw has little or no protein.
I can read different articles...but having a forum like this helps me formulate my words
to explain to someone.
I appreciate all that contributed to my thread.

I just tell 'em with a smile that protein is highly over-rated. :)

I know, that's what I'm saying. We've all been asked that question ~ and, it really doesn't matter ~ vegetarian, vegan, raw... the same questions come up over and over and over and I answer THAT question with a question:
"How did you come up with THAT question?" (How is it everyone is programmed to come up with that?)
AND, do they know ANYone who has died from lack of protein? I'll bet they don't but they know many who've taken ill and died from excess ~ they just don't know it.
You're welcome. :)
you can check out what you're getting and missing on a free nutrition tracking website like fitday.com. shows protein, calcium, etc etc etc. good info when starting out.

Also "we" all have been brainwashed by the big money-making meat industry to believe that the ONLY way to get protein is by consuming meat. It's a bunch of bunk. Or the ONLY way to get calcium is by the big money-making dairy industry. Again a brainwashing tactic.
Veggies, fruits, seeds, nuts, sprouts ALL contain both and more.
