View Full Version : Asking about unpasteurized almonds

I know there is much confusion about "raw" almonds.
Sorry to say "raw" does not mean unpasteurized. My brothers have an organic almond orchard and are not willing to pasteurize all their crop this year. You may buy up to 100lbs a day per individual of unpasteurized almonds, if you get it from the farmer.
I know that it's not right to put in the URL to their farm, but wanted you to watch out for "raw" advertising of almonds. Also beware of almonds from Spain or Italy. When those countries found out about Calif. having to pasteurize their almonds, Spain and Italy imported all their old dried up nuts to put on the market as unpasteurized organic. I spoke to some of the companies who bought them while I was trying to find out why my brothers could not sell their almonds from the 08 crop. Several big almond buyers told me how old and dried up they were, two said they had worms, shell and dirt in them. Be very careful what you are buying.

So trader joes almonds from spain are not really raw? They are organic and big and huge when soaked.

Also do we have to buy 100 lbs? Where to get them? I beleive you can send link here with no problem. Most ask about raw sources for nuts for a better price.

Yeah. As long as Alissa doesn't sell it, you can post a link for it. Alissa doesn't sell almonds so it's safe. So what's that link?

Hey---I just bought a bunch of almonds from this place: Briden Wilson Farms (http://www.homegrownalmonds.com/natural-raw-almonds.html)

They seem to know what's up about the pasturization laws and they assure you these aren't pasturized. They're pretty darn cheap, too, as far as I can tell!

Bonnie1, if another user can post a url to someone's farm, I don't see why you can't. I would be happy to check out the farm you mentioned - I'd love to get some raw almonds, bottom line :p

The URL to get on Bremner Farms (organic almonds) is: organicalmondsraw.com.
Nothing is said about unpasteurized on the site, but you will notice that only 100 lbs. per customer can be sold. The almonds are unpasteurized!!!

As you could see, we also grow walnuts. On the first page you can order the almonds, a 5 lb. box, or a 25 lb. box, just press on your choice. The 2 almond choices are on the left side of the 1st page.
Let me know if you have any difficulty.

Thanks Bonnie1,

I just got 25 lbs from organicpastures.com and they were $200 total.

For 30 lbs, I can get them from yours - Bremner's for $207. Such a deal! I've put it in my file and will order from them next time. Thanks for the heads up.

Green Smoothie Girl is about to order Almonds like this from some farm she knows.
If you go to her website she has the details on there. They will be $3 a pound, yes you read that right. She said we could get a co-op together. I think shipping is like .23 or something. I know they have other nuts/seeds that are being sold too.
If you can't find the link, let me know, I think I have it somewhere.

My understanding is that in order to take advantage of the 100 lb/day you have to actually go to the farm and make a direct purchase from the grower...they are not allowed to ship "unpasturized" almonds.

I have purchased mine here for several years and they always sprout...good enough for me~

Please read this thread and make your own choices...post #17 shows one of the almonds I sprouted..to me, if they sprout they still contain the life force.

GlimR,

I went to that site - Thanks! - However, these almonds are NOT organic. This means that they can spray them with whatever, and use chemical fertilizers. Even truly raw almonds laden with chemicals will sprout!

Now, I am not necessarily saying these are "laden" with chemicals, however, nowhere on their site does it say they are organic, and thus the cost differential.

I remember reading about two brothers who inherited the family almond farm years ago. One wanted organic, the other didn't. So they divided the farm in half. The organic guy got nowhere near the quantities of almonds that the non-organic one got, however, he made the same amt of $$ because he charged more.
