If a recipe calls for one sort of nuts, can I sub with another kind or will that completely ruin the recipe?

Nope, shouldn't ruin the recipe. Might just alter the taste a tad. Seeds can also be subbed a lot of times. Like sunflower for cashews...
what is it you are wanting to make?

if its like a cheesecake recipe, then only cashews or macs would work
any kind of bready, cracker, pate type thing, subbing shouldn't be a prob
