There is a thread going around that discussed this in detail. The search feature really does work ::insert wink here::
I prefer catch and release...

I used to put an overripe banana in the oven on a cookie sheet, leave it open a crack overnight with the light on (take all other fruit out of the kitchen). Then in the morning very 1st thing, sneak into the kitchen, close the oven door, and turn it on for awhile. All of the fruit flies will have been cooked! It really helped me when we had this problem.

i prefer catch and release too. i don't love the idea of killing beings just because they are small if i can help it. obviously mosquitos that are biting the kids and i are an exception but fruit flies are harmless, they're just hungry little frugivores like us! and they are also absolutely amazing creatures.

anyhow, i put a mason jar with a piece of overly ripe fruit into the bottom than roll up a piece of paper into a cone with a very small hole at the tip. stick the cone tip down into the jar adjusting the cone shape until the tip is really close to the fruit. tape the cone in place (i tape it all the way round the jar lip as this ensures no escapees). set it out on the counter and it will collect most of the fruit flies in your kitchen, they can't resist the rotting fruit inside the jar and they can't figure out how to get out once they're in. they are in paradise with their feast of fruit and all their friends invited to the party. plus the kids love this science experiment.

after a few days take the jar outside, remove the cone and dump out the flies and the fruit, rinse the jar, make a new cone and start again.

Oh, and clean everything in the kitchen with a water and vinegar solution, clean the drains of the sink with vinegar and baking soda followed by boiling hot water, don't leave wet or dirty dishes out at all until it's under control. the flies can multiply overnight to enormous populations, make that jar the only hospitable place in the kitchen to them and you'll find that's the only place they'll be after not too long.

Seriously? uhh to caramelize the banana because they are attracted to the sugar???

last time I checked they love sweet stuff.

Seriously! You are going to cook a teeny piece of banana for fruit flies? Well? Have at it then! LOL!

There is quite a few of them... should I use a large piece or would it matter?

I do the paper cone/jar catch and release method and use a piece of banana maybe an inch big. They don't need much. I catch hundreds of 'em! I eat the rest!

That's pretty funny about carmelizing the banana. You don't need a big piece of fruit or to do anything special to it, just put something juicy in there or use banana, it will attract them all especially if the rest of the kitchen is tidy and the sink drains are clean (that's important).

HEEEEELLLP!!!

Ok I had cleaned up the place (I share a living space with 3 others) made sure all the fruit and stuff is in the fridge and when i throw out produce I wrap it up... then things seemed to improved and now out of no where I noticed more and more until now its like when I'm walking around there is a light CLOUD of them!!!

I chopped up some apple and put it in a container and left for an hour. I'm not seeing them really go after it yet...

OH MAN PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!! Its soo bad!!
