Ok. So I am Sam Lehmann - mom of three under 8, wife, teacher, M.Ed, M.ECD, AMI degree, working on Ph.D at UVA. We live in Culpeper, VA - not a hot spot for vegans much less raw foodists. My husband understands my why (clarity, health, energy, wellness, happiness, something for ME) but MANY folks think I am crazy for doing this! I love it and feel so healthy and haven't even bought an appliance yet... using what we have. I have searched for discussions and support - to no avail - but did find a cool soul in Charlottesville - Wendy Victor-Hess... raw "guru"... So, thanks for having me. Posting a question now. Can't wait to hear and learn from / with you.

Yeah, people think I am nuts. Some of my friends get really annoyed with me about it even, saying it isnt "healthy" etc... It is a real pain cause I feel sooo much better raw.

They may have thought I was crazy in the beginning, but not anymore. The results are too obvious to be ignored. Many of my friends are now in the "I wish I could do what you do." stage, but they are full of excuses about not having enough time or money. Or they admire what they consider my "willpower" and talk about not being able to give up their favorite foods. Still, it rubs off, even those friends that can't do it have started eating better.

yes..it just makes me 'a little more difficult to get along with' and add to my 'do you think she's weird or something?' persona.

I just explain to anyone interested enough to ask that better results can be realized by putting clean burning fuel into the body rather then junk.

I personally do not care what other people think. I know how this has worked for me. But I've always been a rebel... ;)

I am too new so nobody really knows yet, my husband knows I am eating vegetarian and eating alot more raw food but that is all so far. I had a scare with my heart recently so I am taking this seriously and hopefully the family will eventually when they see this is not a phase or something. I think that anyone who stays eating raw the proof is in the way the person looks that it is an obvious improvement to ones health. All my family need to eat better so I wish to set a good example.

After a year of talking and raving about the lifestyle I have finally learned to just shut up and do it for myself. Its just not worth getting into the discussion, especially if they are meat eaters. Maybe a vegetarian/vegan would be able to have a reasonable discussion about it but SAD meat eaters - nah - its far to far out of their zone. Cause yeah, they think we are crazy. But we know better;)

Ya this is where the people that I know are at too. Thought I was crazy at first but 20 pounds lighter, glowing skin, looking brighter and fresher all the time.. They wish they could do what I am doing... I hate listening to their excuses lol... and that's when I change the subject :)

Yes, people I know thought I was crazy and probably still do, but they can't deny the changes they see in me, my weight loss is only one of them! I was worried people would start giving me advice about my eating once I got pregnant in May, but I guess they figured I wouldn't listen anyway, so they have pretty much left me alone. I worried about it some at first, but for the most part I don't care what people think anymore. I know I'm doing the right thing for myself, and that's what matters.

Yep. I am not telling many people. My mom thinks it's very unhealthy and that I need meat and grains. She continually asks what I've been eating when we're together, and is always looking at my plate and judging what's on it. I try not to care, but it's difficult when I am so new to this and don't have all the answers to give her when she asks questions.

nobody in my life thinks eating raw is a good thing, this is definitely a struggle, it is my hope that this forum will help out with that.

It will! I am on a cruise in the Caribbean right now, and the other 2,999 people on this ship think I am a lunatic. But guess what? I feel great and look great -- and my health is great.

Raw Food Talk is the place to be - glad you're here!

My husband knows why I'm doing it and he's very impressed with the results so far. Everyone else just thinks I'm strange - but they've thought that no matter what, so I'm not concerned. :D

I just had to say that, yes, I have had many people question my raw food choices over their Pumpkin pie and turkey dinners. When my natropath Dr. told me to eat fish and chicken and then I told her I was a raw food vegan, she looked at me like I was crazy and said, "WHY?? What sense is that? Then she said that her feelings were right, and that I WAS crazier then she thought, LOL> at the time, I did not take it funniily at all because she was VERY serious, but now, years later, I just laugh and think, how naive of a Dr. of all people and a NATROPATH at that, to practically insist I eat meat or threaten my mentality over it !!! How crazy is THAT, people??

OH!! And, BTW, my name is Invisible, and I'm a Raw Food Vegan. BYE!

Of course people think I'm a lunatic!

But I notice that the further toward a healthier diet people havem the less likely they'll think I'm nuts, and the longer they know/have known me and see my health, vitality and/or changes the less likely they are to think what I do is unhealthy or way out.

Over the years my family has become silent with the taunting, especially the females, as they watch me age less than normal, have vibrant energy, happy outlook and a host of other things that are apparent.

It gets better, but even now with meeting new people, it's like water off a ducks back what they think as I know first hand the results!

YEP> you've got to develop a "tough skin" as they say to survive the raw food lifestyle, for SURE, as we are so different from the norm out there. Besides,
it is NO measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society, anyway.

tough skin??? oh no, but you'll definitely develop strong "laughing muscels" having to listen to so much "good advice" from the others. I don't even try to hold it in anymore, some peeps have such funny thoughts!!! :D

Yeah people thinks I'm crazy too, like if it was soooo unhealthy and dangereous. Normally, people think I'm weird because I'm vegetarian (that's what I say first), than vegan than raw. And when it comes to raw they are like: ok this girl is wayyy tooo much.

But anyways, I do feel good about me, my health and my mind by eating raw so I try not to listen too much about these things. My husband support me a lot and knows why I'm doing it, even if he's not raw at all and not vegetarian at all neither. :)

Dont feel alone! If the others weren't talking about this, it surely would have been something else...!!
