Hello,

Does anyone know why basil can have black spots on the leaves? And is that still edible or is that a type of mold?

There are a number of potential causes to blackening on basil leaves--some are nutritional, some are caused by plant diseases, and some are caused by environmental problems. Generally, the major cause of black, dying basil leaves is cold weather. Temperatures below about 10-12 deg. C will start to damage basil leaves, particularly where conditions are wet. A slight frost will also cause blackening, even though it might be quite warm during the day.

Bacterial diseases, such as bacterial leaf spot and bacterial soft rot, can also cause blackening and death of leaves, particularly under damp conditions. These can be prevented and controlled with sprays of copper products and by allowing more airflow around the plants. The problem may also be a fungal disease (of which there are many) and application of a general purpose fungicide product may be required to clear up the problem. Botrytis is often a problem in basil and, if this is the cause, you will notice gray or brown furry spore growth on the stem and foliage spots or lesions.

Various nutrient deficiencies can also cause the blackening symptoms--the main one on basil being a potassium deficiency. Basil needs good potassium levels and a deficiency will show up as brown or black necrotic patches on the older or lower leaves, which spread rapidly.

Oh my gosh - either way does not sound good. It does not matter what time of year I purchase them at the grocery store - they always have black spots on them! Thanks for the info. Makes me think I should toss them out :(

OR take it back and get a refund or educate the grocer that these aren't the best...?
