Can someone tell me the best beginer's book for raw food? Something that talks about green smoothies as well? I am primarily a vegetarian/vegan but am looking to eat more raw.
Thanks!

Hands down that would be Alissa Cohen's LIVING ON LIVE FOOD!

Alissa's book is the number one for sure. The only guide you'll need, written by a guru.
For some supplementary knowledge check out

I bet if you typed in "raw food" you would get a decent read from the very first or second link.
Plus, everyone on this board is more than enthusiastic to help you in any way they can. What a valuable resource RFT is.

In addition to Alissa's book, which is wonderful, I like The Idiot's Guide to Raw Food, which has a nice sense of humor.

Thanks everyone.
I have been fighting Lyme disease and Babesiosis for a while now and the nutritionist I had seen said she and a friend both got well by following a raw food diet and taking specific enzymes. Her friend did about 75-80% raw.
How about a decent, yet inexpensive blender for green smoothies? Do I have to go the Vitamix route?

Hi Rich, I've got a Cuisinart blender that converts to a food processor which was a refurb on Amazon for about $80. It doesn't do as well as a Vitamix, but boatloads better than one from Target or Wallyworld... I've had it for almost 3 years now and it's taken quite a lot of abuse :)

Hi, what model is it?

they don't sell it anymore that I can find, but this one is very similar. The refurbished version of this one is only $50, but doesn't come with the food processor attachment:

Thanks, is the Vitamix that much better? My mother in law is a manager at Fantes in Philadelphia so she can get me 40% off items and I know they carry lots of Cuisinart products. I thought about getting a used one, but then you have to deal with problems and dull blades.
Where is the $50 refurbished one? I couldn't find it. Thanks again!

the vitamix is 100 times better, and costs 10 times more :) This is just a great middle-gound, and works well for me and my raw husband (who loves smoothies)
Here's that refurb: I find it does well with almost all greens, but not the greatest with Kale.

I highly recommend Allissa's dvd as well. She teaches you how to prepare your food and she does cover so many areas.

The Cusinart scares me a bit if it can't handle kale to well. What are the typical veggies for green smoothies? I also thought of a juicer but I am a firm believer we need the entire vegetable, fruit, not just the juice!
Do you add any sort of liquid other than water? I like fruit smoothies with almond milk.
I'll see if I can get her book and DVD as a package.

Thanks! I am wondering if I can first try my run of the mill grinder at home?
Do you use ice cubes too to make it a real smoothie? :p My current grinder will not crush ice cubes. I like my smoothies cold.
So, will it do most veggies as you say other than kale??? Thanks!

I am getting the refurbed blender. Any tips on places to get great green smoothie recipes?

Are there any recipes that concentrate on veggies and less fruit? Because of my treatment I have to watch sugar content...even fruit. I can stick to more of the low sugar fruits and high fiber ones.
RawChicster, I just ordered that refurb but I didn't see the price for $50. It turned out to be $69.

Get Alissa's book AND her DVD. I felt very helpless before I watched her DVD. There are things in the book that you think you know how to make, and then you watch her do it and you think, "OH, I should have left that in the food processor longer," (for example)

I can say with some authority that Alissa's book is the best one out there (I have almost every raw book there is). Out of the dozens of books I have I use Alissa's book 95% of the time. I also recommend the DVD for inspiration.
For green smoothies, you might want to consider Victoria Boutenko's "Green for Life" or her new book "Green Smoothie Revolution". She explains the theory behind the green smoothies and has a lot of recipes.

Well, I love Victoria Boutenko Green For LIfe book. I had it right when I needed it, when I frist went raw.
As time progressed I got more books and more info..unfolded exactly as it wanted to. I have done well!!
However I would have gotten Alissas book Living On Live Food had I known how much it would have helped and save me alot!!!
There are my two pix.....Green For Life and Living on Live Food.

I have tons of raw food books and love lots of them but if I could only have one book out of all of them.....it would be Alissa's book and her DVD.....I'd choose it without even a second thought.
