View Full Version : I'm really excited about arame...

...because i've been using it like pasta, and it works really well. I soaked some and ate some and noticed it tasted very mild and soft, much like the whole wheat pasta i used to love. So instead of doctoring it up like a seaweed salad, i put on some olive oil, salt, pepper, basil, oregano, rosemary and crushed garlic on it and OH MY GOD presto! SPAGHETTI!

I can't wait to try it with a little pine nut Parmesan or tomato sauce. I can't believe how much it tasted and felt like wheat pasta.

i heard it has a lot of sodium though, any thoughts on that?

Hi kidkid ~ I can't answer your question about sodium, but I too am a big fan or arame! I like it because it doesn't taste like seaweed :)

Here's the only way I've eaten it. I'm making this salad right now for this weekend. I too want to try it as pasta - it would be a nice switch from zucchini or yellow squash.

This recipe is adapted from Donna Gates’ The Body Ecology Diet. You can check out her site by clicking here!

Raw Food Recipe - Cucumber Arame Salad

1.5 Oz of Arame
4 cucumbers, peeled and very thinly sliced
2 tsp. sea salt
1 red pepper, diced
1 small red onion, diced
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsp unrefined oil
pinch of pepper

Soak arame for 15 mins in enough water to cover. Sprinkle sea salt on cucumbers and let set for several minutes to release juices. Discard soaking water from arame. Chop arame and add to cucumbers. Add all other ingredients and toss!

Deb's notes: I use 1 ounce of arame, which is half a package. I soak it for about an hour as well. I don't know that it's necessary, but it works for me. My husband doesn't eat nightshades (the red pepper), so I make his separate and substitute grated carrot and he enjoys that. There's a video at the URL if you'd like to watch that.

Also - I like to make this in the morning for dinner that night, so the flavors have a chance to blend. It tastes very different after it's been in the fridge all day compared to taking a taste right after making it.*Ü*

Arame and wakame, soak, rinse, most of the saltiness washes out.
cucumber
avocado
a dressing made of tahini and lemon, maybe some garlic and a little olive oil
it sort of thickens, but you could save a little of your salty soaking liquid, to thin it, or maybe the cukes dillute it. My SAD hubby even really liked it.
I may have missed something you'd like to add , I had something like this at my first raw potluck, and was not quite sure I got it right, OH, but it's good.

What brand do you get & is it raw? I'd love to try it.

Hi ~ I order mine every month from Azure Standard (http://www.azurestandard.com/product.php?id=CO212)and it's Eden Food brand.

I asked Kevin Gianni (Renegade Health Show) this question after watching his video of the recipe I posted above and he replied on a following video that no, this arame is not raw but even though it's cooked, the cooking does not destroy the minerals in it. So, I gladly added it to my diet. *Ü*

Yay DejaVu! I'm so glad you made it and enjoyed it. It's so easy and the ingredients are typically something I always have on hand! *Ü*

Hi! Bummer that I am just getting back to read the answer to my question now cuz I went to Whole Foods last night.

Would you please tell me the brand of arame that you get so that I get the one that has passed the "taste" test?

Thanks so much! Ü

Hi Walnutty, the brand I have is Emerald Cove

Everybody:

Did you see the post above by DebB? Now I am re-thinking arame -- did not realize it was steamed - I thought it was just dried.

I need to start wearing my glasses when I read labels.

Any thoughts?

heat doesn't destroy minerals, only vitamins and enzymes. the concern is that heat mutates things in unknown ways.
still, if you are willing to add something that isn't entirely raw into your diet seaveg isn't a bad way to go.
i got some dulse the other day, it's stinking up my cupboards so much that i'm pretty sure it's going to be a while before i eat any of it. arame is next on the list.

Hi walnutty ~ I've got a link in my post above to the brand I use if you want to take a look at its picture. It's from Eden foods.

Hi revdrcyn ~ I was surprised when I heard it was cooked also, but I feel real good about adding it to my diet for its rich mineral content. *Ü*
