View Full Version : Neck Pain - need suggestions

For about a week, I've had pain in the right side of my neck. I've gone to the chiropractor twice, and my massage therapist twice. It hurts to turn my head to both sides. The pain is also radiating down my right arm and into my hand. The chiropractor thinks that it's more muscular pain. Today at my massage, at one point she had me turn my head and I was pain free, then at the end of the massage, the pain was back. So I feel like a nerve is involved - maybe the nerve is being pinched, and temporarily during the massage it was un-pinched?
I also have polycystic kidney disease. I'm about 50% raw, but trying to do more. Any suggestions on any food, herb, or technique that could help? I really don't want to take a pain pill, but the pain has caused me to be out of work today and I just can't call in sick again tomorrow. I need some relief!
I think I know what caused it (too much typing at work & computer games for about a week), and my daughter sleeping with us in bed. I've got her out of our bed, and I've eased up on my computer use this week, but it hasn't gotten better, just worse.
Any suggestions are welcome, please.

I had neck and back pains constantly for years. What helped me a LOT was a high raw diet and I think most importantly more exercise.
Just walking for an hour or so a day does a lot for the spine.

Now that I do daily stretching exercises, I never go to the chiropractor. It's important to try to do them daily and especially when any body part is in pain. Wall pushups and other similar exercises are very, very helpful for the back and neck. Yoga is great for maintenance.
MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory, if exercise alone isn't enough.

I agree with SevenKindsofCookies ... real good advice.
if you have radiating pain and ANY numbness... it wouldn't hurt to see a doctor... and you're right about the pain pills... they do not heal you - just mask the pain for a few hours.
Neck pain, radiating pain, weakness in the hand or arm, or any numbness and tingling is not something to ignore... I ignored it for years -- until I lost complete loss of the use of my right hand and arm ... turned out I had 3 ruptured discs and ended up in surgery twice.
It's good to have a dr look at it now - just to make sure there's nothing serious wrong.
keep us posted...!!

sorry your in such pain. I had this last week..I slept wrong, couldn't turn my head & down my arm. I took hot showers & did my best not put pain in my neck. I put ACV on it..I know:confused:. I massaged it with a bumpy shower massager. I was much better then next day &n resolved the next. I'm a big prayer too.
Maybe you need to do some short massages to work it out. Hope it's resolved soon.

Thanks everyone, what is MSM and ACV? Sorry I'm kinda new to all of this and don't know what they mean.
I totally agree about the excercise, but unfortunately I have not done any excercise lately. And now, it hurts to think about doing it! I have not had any numbness in my arm, just kind of achey and hurts if I put it in a certain position.

T-Tapp (http://www.t-tapp.com) is an amazing exercise system that will REALLY help neck and back pain. I used to be plagued with it and even though I have done T-Tapp very inconsistantly over the last 10 years my neck and back pain have improved to the point where most days I hardly think about it anymore, where it used to be a plague on my life.

Have you applied any Heat to it, like a Heating Pad?

Spicyful, yes I've done heat, ice, and heat & ice. Heat helps me get a little bit more range of motion, but the pain it still intense. I think I'm going to the doc today to see if something more serious is going on.

It sounds like you have inflammation in that area, which can cause there to be pressure on a nerve, causing pain and inflammation is always sore or painful. I would do something for the inflammation and put cold packs on it (which reduces inflammation). Neck pain isn't fun.....get feeling better.

I used to have back & neck pain but I don't have it anymore. :) I got rid of it by getting support. I got a neck support pillow and a firm body support mattress. The neck pillow allows me to move the pillow material in under the neck in a contouring way that supports the neck for a comfortable sleep.

I have never heard of this before!
I have neck pain, too. I'm working with a chiropractor. I also used to have pain in my hands, arm, etc. I could feel that it was coming from my neck. My xrays showed that my neck had lost its curve completely and was even starting to go backwards (I had really bad whiplash from a car accident). Definitely keep going to your chiropractor - fixing your alignment will take time - just don't stop going to the chiropractor.
This story on the T-tapp website mentions healing severe neck pain, I am so interested in this - http://www.t-tapp.com/success/gina/default.html

ACV is apple cider vinegar. MSM is methylsulfonylmethane. There are some here who use the MSM supplement who may better explain its properties than me. Just thought I would answer those two acronyms for you.

I suffered from pain of this sort for many years and even had major surgery to try to correct it (they thought that it was TMJ and cut and moved my jaw bone). Therapy did me no good and then I discovered The Semi-Supine Position which is an Alaxander Technique discipline.
Now all I have to do is lay down on the floor for 20 minutes from time to time (can even watch tv while doing it) and I am problem free.
If you google it you will find lots of info.

go for a good long run........or for a swim...or do both. These are the only ones that help me. Get well soon

For me, I never lean towards illness and medicine and surgery and doctors.
I look into me and see what this is.
Shoulder pain in mind body concept is a shouldering of too much responsibility or weight on your shoulders. Sometimes simply lookng at this and acknowledging it, makes it go away.
I would look where it started. What was happening in your life at the time and how you are feeling emotionally and mentally. What made it worse or better etc. Ask all kinds of questions to see where this originated and what your whole body wants to do to work together to remedy it. The answer is inside not out there. Any mechanical (medical intervention)means to "cure" it will hurt your body meanwhile and you wont be cured.
Definitely stretch it and apply stuff it that helps. But I would look inside.
Look at this and process that through to the end. Then see how you feel.
It works. Hope you feel better.
