When you don't know what's related to what??

OK - so here's for a start on the families. Please copy list and paste and add in so that we can continuously reference a complete list.

I'm taking this from a book mostly, so somethings I might include in the list and not be too terribly sure on what it is - if the greens are eaten or something else off the plant

Brassica Family:

Agricultural mustard
arugula
Brocolli greens
Sprouting brocolli
brussel sprouts
cabbage
chinese cabage
cress
upland cress
turnip greens
seakale

kohlrabi
mizuna greens
mustard greens
oritental mustard greens
bok choi
radish greens

The beet family
beet
chard
swiss chard
seakale beet

red orach
spinach

Aster family

Lettuces

That's all I got here, hopefully we can build this up to include more of the edible weeds and wild greens that can be foraged.

Hope some of you enjoy the info....

So we have to rotate our greens according to what family they're in? I regularly eat romaine, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and spinach. They're the only ones I really like. That's gonna have to be rotation enough for me. I'll let ya know if I get a kidney stone. That's supposed to be what happens when you don't rotate your greens, right?

Here's an interesting blog post I found on oxalates. Makes sense to me.

That's too much detail for me. I rotate the ones I buy: curly kale, chard, rainbow chard, dino kale, spinach & sometimes bok choy. I rotate those.

Every day I do put in spinach and the mixed baby salad lettuce greens or other lettuces I find at the farmer's market, and call it good.

I've also started adding wild edibles like lambsquarters, dandelion & plantain. *Ü*

makes sense to me too.

also on the subject however a little o/t,,, with herbs and supplements people take daily like ginseng for instance... for most things it's natures rule 6 weeks on and 2 weeks off or else we become amuned to it and won't give off the healing benefits. but i personaly feel nothing should be taken daily all the time even if for 6 weeks at a time.

That's good to hear, thanks for posting the list. I was kinda worried as I didn't think I rotated enough but I see the ones I do like are mostly in different families.
I do mostly beet greens, romaine, spinach, kale and sometimes chard, pea shoots/leaves, bok choy or parsley. I haven't gotten any more adventurous than that, lol!

I am glad I read that article, because today I made a smoothie with twice as much collards as usual, two huge leaves. It was so bitter I had to add another peach. After just a few sips, my chest tightened up and my throat started to burn and I got intensely dizzy, and I was driving at the time! Because I had read the article, I knew not to be scared. So now I know I really need to rotate out of the brassica family, or at least not do collards for awhile. Right now all I have in my fridge is mustard greens and collards so I will try the mustard greens tomorrow and see if it has the same effect. If it does, time to go shopping.

I read through the article, and I'm here to tell ya. I went raw without any prior information, reading books along the way, but just not digesting it, I guess. Eating alot of the foods, I have always eaten, just more of them, plus those I hadn't eaten much of. Like kale, lots of it. Juicing it about every day, salads, avocado pesto, in a nori sheet-burrito style. I have always loved the whole brassica family; radishes, big black ones, especially and daikon, cabbage, bok choy, nappa, turnips, rutabaga, kohlrabi, etc., you get it, I just ate more. See, I'm the excessive compulsive type Debbie Took described. My personal experience was, after just 6 mos, I had all of the serious hypothyroid symptoms. I totally screwed myself up, and still not straight, almost two years later. I have only recently, finally decided to swear off the whole family, though I crave them. There really is so much we can do to hurt ourselves when we jump into something like this, going overboard. I'd take the caution seriously. Most of it was not addressed for some time, because I was looking in the wrong place for the cause of the feeling like I had been gutted, and packed full of ice, and absolutely no energy. I feel like I will never recover. I don't mean to be so negative, but don't throw caution to the wind. It seems pretty stupid to me now, to think that I could just be so caught up in something, not to really educate myself, first.

Lavendula,

Sorry to hear that.

Could you tell us what those thyroid symtoms are - particularly early signs to be careful?

Lavendula

were, first; the icy cold (internal damp-TCM) feeling inside, that started in the abdomen and was eventually even in my chest, constant. Even as I was drinking hot tea, or eating my warm raw soup with warming spices, etc., or using a heating pad, it's awful, but I felt really dead inside. Hair loss; very, dry, weird chalky feeling skin; zero physical or emotional energy, even if someone took me grocery shopping, it was too overwhelming for me. I was exhausted from taking a shower and doing the dishes. I really lost weight, too, in a hyper/hypothyroid cycle, if that makes sense. I have gained more weight back, than I'd like, and can't get it off. The cold is not so icy, but still there, enough for me to always be acutely aware of it. The skin and hair are somewhat better, and I have some of my energy and confidence back, but I have to guard it. I'm taking all kinds of stuff for thyroid and adrenal support. Eating more fats and protein is key for adrenal fatigue, for me it's mostly nuts, coconut oil and butter, olive oil. I have to work hard at it. I still eat too much fruit w/o the protein in the am. Not too many people are as out of balance as I am, and it's as bad as ever. I have seen this come up over and over again the last two years, so it is a common result of not knowing what we are doing. At least in my case, it was a lack of educating myself. I believe everybody should learn there metabolic type, and eat accordingly

Thanks so much Levendula,

I wish you the best of luck and continued recovery.

Both grandmothers died of thyroid related diseases, I think. Need to check on this. But I certainly could be more careful, and need to start thinking about this more.

I was eating beet greens and kale on a recent road trip, I didn't have anything to eat, was just nibbling on the leaves to keep my tum from hurting too much from hunger whilst driving. I thouhgt - hmmmm, not too bad, the sweet of the beet and the bitter of the kale kind of cancelled each other a bit. I thought - I can do this.

Then my throat got very ichy and scratchy, and I thought about these issues again....very worrisome....
