I made raw hummus yesterday and BLECH! I realize raw chick peas taste way different than cooked but is raw hummus supposed to taste like dirt? The recipe I used was 1 c. sprouted chickpeas, 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, 2 tbsp. raw tahini and some spices. Its definitely not the spice mixture because i've used it with making cooked hummus and it was fine. Is anyone else not a fan of raw hummus?

Try zuchinni hummus instead. You really cannot taste the zuchinni, it is more easily digestible than the chickpea hummus, and it tastes fantastic.
I use Alissa's recipe from the book, and if you don't have that, go to Gone Raw, they have a couple good recipes there.

I've wanted to try a raw hummus recipe, but raw zucchini is horrible to me. And yes, I've been a wimp. :o So, it doesn't actually taste like zucchini?

I agree with this! Don't like zucchini even cooked, unless it's chopped very small and mixed in with lots of other stuff. So.. I basically have avoided any raw recipes which include zucchini..

Please have faith and just try it! There is NO zuchinni taste, I promise you! Make half the recipe and see what you've been missing! :)

I have a Chickpea hummus that I like on my blog here (http://duaneepperly.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!486E62B391467F29!640.entry)... I to am one that likes Chickpeas and the zucchini hummus just doesn't do to for me. Also probably the most important thing to note about sprouting Chickpeas, the longer the tail the more bitter the pea becomes. I use my chickpeas before the tail gets longer than 1/4 of an inch in length, most times they are just starting out of the pea when I grab them for use. It's all about adding flavors and getting the peas just as they sprout.
There is also a wonderful Falafal recipe for a chickpea based falafal in the Rawvolutions cook book (seems funny calling any raw food book a cook book), that I love and make all the time.
Have Fun!

I agree about the RAWvolution falafel--delicious! And yeah... I only sprout the chickpeas from the morning until evening when I make this recipe. I also add in some cumin, since 'real' falafel does have cumin in it. SO yummy with the mango salsa, too!

I've been wondering this as well (about using raw chickpeas)....haven't tried it yet though. However, I am a huge fan of zucchini hummus!!!! You gotta try it :D Even my mom wants the recipe I use (Matt Amsden's). It's sooooo tasty and no, it doesn't taste like zucchini, it tastes like fresh, light hummus.

I think I'll give it a whirl then. If I don't like it, maybe the kiddos will. =)
