View Full Version : Why does coconut oil make me sick?

I've been 99% percent raw for two months now. (I try to be 100%, some of my spices may not be raw, and once I ate a 60% raw bar, and I occasionally use carob powder that's not raw)
When I have coconut oil, it generally makes me sick to my stomach. Tonight (for dessert) I had frozen bananas coated with carob and coconut oil. I have noticed that whenever I eat coconut oil (I'm not sure, but olive oil may do it too) it makes me nauseous. (It's raw coconut oil.) Although the carob powder isn't raw, I'm fairly sure its not that. Depending on how much coconut oil I have, it may just make my stomach feel heavy, or it could make me sick.
So, why can't my body handle coconut oil? Any ideas? Do I need to include more details?

Maybe you can't process the fats. I know I can't, every time I eat something that has too much fat, even if it's good fat, it makes me nausea.
Do you have gallbladder problems? I know people that do have trouble when they eat fat.
It's hard I know, there are so many yummy raw foods out there that I can't eat do to the oils, and fat :(
Good Luck

I guess that's what it must be, but I don't know if I have gallbladder problems or not. I've never eaten really really bad food and I'm a little puzzled at how unhealthy my body is. Oh well.
Edited to add: When I was eating cooked, I used to make french fries, and they had lots of oil on them. I never had trouble with those...maybe I just wasn't getting the quantity of fat?

What brand is the oil?

It's Nutiva. It says Organic Unrefined Cold Pressed Extra Virgin. Maybe it's not raw, I get all mixed up. :o

It's not raw. This could be the culprit. Coconut oil also acts as a detoxifier so for some it's better to use it slowly and build up.

Alissa carries raw coconut oil. You want to get an oil that uses the same process, if not that brand.

I have trouble with coconut oil also. Makes me feel like I have a lead ball in my stomach and nauseous. I no longer bother eating it. I will smear it on my body but not eat it.

My gall bladder is about shot. My doctor want to remove it, but I'm waiting to see if it improves on an all raw diet. Anyway, I can't tolerate oils in general. I'm OK with nuts and seeds, but any free oil like olive or coconut will set off a bout of nausea.

I would do the liver gall bladder flush...once every two weeks until it improves...no surgery is needed for gallbladder if you do the flush. Our bodies can heal sooo much without needing to be intervened wth medically.

I did the gallbladder flush three times and never got a thing out. Super disappointed and confused

how does coconut oil detoxify? I had been taught the opposite, so just curious

OMG, all these things everyone posted, all crossed my mind - I was also going to suggest the liver/gall bladder cleanse.

Everything except the Nutiva coconut oil. I'm bummed! I just bought two gallons at $34 a gallon!. Can you tell me where to find out about its "rawness" or "lack of?"

Oh, I do have one thing to add: If you have the $$ wherewithal or good insurance, you may want to do a Complete Digestive Stool Analysis" by Genova Diagnostics (or some other co - that's just the one I know). It showed me over a dozen yrs ago, that I was deficient in digestive enzymes and HCL. Interestingly enough, I never noticed any digestive issues.

Kevin Gianni also had a Dr. Dina on his Renegade health Show that disputed the "health food status" of coconut oil, whereas there's lots of literature to the contrary.

JulieW, I've done the gall bladder cleanse three times also, and no stones came out either. I did two in a row/back to back the first time. I know it emptied out/cleansed, because when I did poop, it was a real dark stinky green. Sorry to be so graphic.

However, while pregnant seven yrs ago with twins, I was going into labor early and my gall bladder was not emptying (bad itchy rash/bile salts in skin), and I took a drug to empty it. I've wondered if that's why. Wonder if you're just not "pure!" LOL

Info from Nutiva:
Dry Expeller Pressed 170º F, conveyed through a hot-air dryer.

Okay, I knew what I was saying. :)

Coconut oil is a natural detoxifier
There are two key ideas surrounding using coconut oil as a detoxifier. Since it fuels metabolism, your body’s ability to neutralize and eliminate impurities is kicked into high gear in conjunction with the increased metabolism. The Medium Chain Fatty Acids in virgin coconut oil also naturally kill off toxins – both those that are destructive and those that are created as byproducts. You get a double dose of detoxification.

Many other sources. This is why it's recommended for the bird flues as it kills the virus.

wow, thanks. i had always heard that it was heavy and hard to digest which taxed the body's ability to work on detox.

good to know!

juliew, gall bladder / liver flush is very effective whether you see big stuf or not....lots of debris comes out. Also you must do it as directed to get the best results...not changing a thing in the directions.

Hi,
I did it just as directed except for the very last dose of epsom salts in the morning b/c I had a colonic and it wasn't necessary. That's good that it's effective even if no stones come out. I just don't get why after three flushes I still can't emulsify fats I eat! grrr

So you know how coconut butter promotes weight loss? Well I was wondering if the same properties are in cacao butter...if anyone has heard?

Hi there,

All fats are difficult for the body to process and digest, particularly oils and nuts. Just avoid them if they bother you. You don't need them. Stick to avocados for your fats. They are higher in water content, are actually a fruit and are much easier to digest.

Blessings,

Audrey

If only coconut oil makes you sick then maybe you are having candida die-off? coconut oil is an anti fungal and when candida(yeast) in the stomach dies it makes you feel not so good (symptoms like nausea and stuff). If not then maybe it's a gall bladder problem. If so then try a gall bladder flush and see if that helps you.

I have a hard time with coconut oil too. When i read recipes with it i got really excited because i know that it is good for you and i love coconut so i thought i would really love the recipes using it. It makes me feel nauseated and kind of light headed too but honestly i don't really like the taste of it. Its a little two sweet and over powering for me. I have decided to not really use it and if possible just replace it in a receipe with some raw agave. The candida die off is interesting and it makes me want to use cocnut oil for the health benefits and hope that eventually the sick feeling goes away but i really cant get over how it tastes.

I am another one nauseated when I add coconut oil to something. Does not seem to happen with anything else.

Coconut oil is very high in saturated fats. For this reason, it should not be consumed regularly. It may also be why your body is having a hard time digesting and assimilating it, it's not really that healthy, when compared to other plant oils. Coconut oil raises blood cholesterol levels and can contribute to cardiovascular risk factors after years of consumption. 100 grams of coconut oil contain about 80 grams of saturated fat, that's just huge when compared to other oils. I would suggest using olive oil or sunflower oil, at least for comparative purposes. If you feel better eating those, then you may simply have some difficulty in digesting saturated fats.

I'll still eat it because what I've read is that coconut oil is high in lauric acid (it's 50% lauric acid), a type of saturated fat that's very good for you and which is found in mother's milk.

I also read that coconut oil does raise total cholesterol levels, however the ratio of good to bad cholesterol changes in favor of the good cholesterol. Good cholesterol removes the bad cholesterol and so the net effect is a healthy heart. I also read about Pacific Islanders who ate a lot of coconut and who were healthy until they moved to modern society and changed their diets.

I thought I was doing great by eating olive oil but I like coconut oil so much better!
